Title: Random HP Questions?
Hermione Granger - September 6, 2004 05:12 PM (GMT)
This is the place for all your little HP book related questions, ones that you don't think are worth making a whole topic for.
I'm re-reading the 5th book at the moment and I'm coming up with lots of little strange things that I'm thinking about. I think it might be that I'm over-analyzing the book but I've got a couple questions..lol
How do the Howarts students scheduals work? Like do they have the same classes everyday? Or is it every other day? Because when they get homework Ron and Harry always seem to do it on Sunday, so does that mean that they only have the particular class once a week? Can anyone help me with this? lol

its a book, its not meant to be perfect so little mistakes like that may accure, but the good thing with reading a story is that u can use ur imagination and patch up the mistakes using ur own mind
Hermione Granger - September 6, 2004 07:30 PM (GMT)
I don't think its really a mistake, I think that JKR has an idea of when their classes are supposed to take place, I was just wondering if anyone had thought about it anymore then I had...lol

Well personally, I always kind of imagined it like a University, where a class had an assigned day, or maybe two, each week. I mean, how many classes do they have in a given year? Potions, DADA, History of Magic, Herbology, Charms, Astrology... or is it Astronomy? No, Astrology, right? *scratches head* Anyway, Divination, Care of Magical Creatures... and then there's Arithmancy, Muggle Studies, Flying Lessons... I know they might not have all of those each year, but they certainly have too many classes to go to them all in one day. So I always imagined them being spread out over the week. That would also explain why Harry and Ron leave homework until the weekend. *shrug* That's just how I've always thought of it. I could be wrong.

Thanks! I was just looking in my book and it seems like they have like, about 4 classes a day, in the 5th book anyway. So I guess it would work like that, but then it kinda seems like they'd run out of classes if they're only once a week...I don't know....
Sir Cadogan - September 8, 2004 12:43 AM (GMT)
Well, yeah, I guess it would work, but then again, in book 4, Freg and George come in to the Great Hall, to Ron and Harry, and speaks about Moody - in the second week I believe. Then Ron pulls out his Timetable, and says "We haven't got him till Thursday!" Why don't you go ask JK at her Website? It would be interesting to see what she has to say about it!

dan radcliffe luver please don't double post and also please don't post all in caps. I belive you've already been warned about this. Thankyou.
I've got another question, lol. Was Oliver Wood 3 years older than Harry? Because he was in the 4th book wasn't he? Because I thought that Harry and Cho were talking in the 5th book and someone said something about seeing him play for some Quidditch team last summer But wouldn't he still have been at school then? Last summer would have then been the summer before his 7th year?

Oliver is mentioned in the fourth book when Harry runs into him at the Quidditch World Cup. "Oliver Wood, the old captain of Harry's house Quidditch team, who had just left Hogwarts,.......told him excitedly that he had just been signed to the Puddlemere United reserve team." (chapter 7, p.g. 78 in my copy of the book).
I remember oliver saying in book 3 how it was his last chance to win the Quidditch cup, so he must have been in his seventh year then.
With the lessons thing, i always assumed that they were on a 5 day cycle in which they had set clasess for each day. So each monday would be the same classes- but like school you'd spend more hours in the week going to the more important classess- so they'd have more class time during the entire week in charms than they might have in divination. I'll have to pay more attention to their class times and get back to you.
We do know how long an actual lesson goes for though. In chapter 18 of GOF Harry has double potions and it's mentioned that it lasts for 90 minutes. And as half of that is 45 minutes, a single lesson must last for 45 minutes.
Sir Cadogan - November 10, 2004 04:33 AM (GMT)
Oliver was - no, sorry, IS - 4 years older than Harry, and Cedric was 2 or 3, I think 2 ... but anyway ...
Hermione Granger - November 11, 2004 02:45 AM (GMT)
ok thanks guys, I can't remember why I thought he was only 3 years older, I have some reason but now I can't remember it....

Oliver Wood was in his fifth year when Harry was in his first...
And my guess on the whole homework thing is that they get a while to complete assignment, since a lot of them are essays. And about 4 or 5 classes a day sounds right
Erised - November 17, 2004 07:41 PM (GMT)
Yeah, and don't forget, they dont have each class every day... They sort of have block scheduling.
LadyCroft - July 15, 2005 01:26 PM (GMT)
well i'd like ron with fleur!!!!
Nat-Jane - July 19, 2005 08:46 AM (GMT)
That would be a really interesting match! lol most unlikely pair that I could think of. I think that eventually Hermoine and Ron are going to get together, Kinda looks as if it maygo that way, hope so....

Ok, here's what I've always wondered: Harry's a wizard, Hermione's a witch, but the male derivative of witch is warlock? So, what's the difference between wizards and warlocks? (Both appear in the books)
Hermione Granger - August 24, 2005 04:34 PM (GMT)
wow, I have no idea. When do they say Warlock?
Kat - August 24, 2005 10:20 PM (GMT)
I can't think of any specifics at the moment, but it's said several times throughout all six books...
Hermione Granger - August 25, 2005 06:22 PM (GMT)
I don't know...I'll have to consult my books...
