Title: Login problem

Chris Chaloner - July 14, 2003 08:44 AM (GMT)
Every time I try to log in, it says "Sorry, that session has expired (possibly you were using a bookmark or the Back button after logging out). Please log in again."

So I try to log in, and get sent straight back to the same page. Switching the cookie option on doesn't make any difference either.

Is anyone else having this problem, or am I just doing something wrong?

DIGIWORLD_RevStu - July 14, 2003 08:46 AM (GMT)
Several people have had this problem, but we have no idea why. Investigations continue, in the meantime keep trying, as it apparently works eventually.

Nebulus - July 14, 2003 09:09 AM (GMT)
yeah this happened to me too. i just kept trying over and over. after about 10 tries it worked. bonus!

jamesds - July 14, 2003 09:12 AM (GMT)
I was getting that as well. Might be something to do with the corporate firewall/web cache I'm behind, maybe?

Also, the forum is a bit unusable at the moment as none of the images work so I can't tell what any of the buttons do. Looking at the code, they seem to be coming from a server on port 54, rather than the http port 80, so my firewall blocks the requests.

DIGIWORLD_RevStu - July 14, 2003 09:29 AM (GMT)
First we've heard of that one, the forum looks fine at this end.

jamesds - July 14, 2003 09:45 AM (GMT)
It's because all the images have addreses like http://i1.ifrm.com/style_images/1/t_reply.gif and my work's firewall (like most firewalls, I'd imagine) blocks anything that isn't on port 80 because it doesn't know what it is.

Still, I know what the buttons do now anyway, so it's not really important.

Hm.

I've tried repeatedly - indeed until the flesh has abraded from my fingertips and my neglected Firstborn is evidencing advanced indications of malnutrition. To no avail.

I shall, however, persevere. For another hour or so, anyway.

If anyone needs me, I'll be in the corner, whimpering piteously over What Might Have Been.

Ste Pickford - July 14, 2003 10:38 AM (GMT)
same problem here, but I got in somehow in the end. Are you using the same login software as NOE's website?

Francobash - July 14, 2003 11:07 AM (GMT)
I had the same problem, but got in after lots of attempts (after reading it works here). I feel a bit silly though as I sent an email requesting help before looking here. So sorry Digiworld people!

Won't happen again.

Zobbster - July 14, 2003 12:34 PM (GMT)
Strangely enough, this error reared its head first time around entering the site, but like some fearless web-warrior, I shrugged it off and managed to get in (something to do with clearing the cache and temp-ho files).

Second time around, trying to enter the site, and now, regardless of what I bloody do, it will not let me in. So I gave up. A pox on your registration/login software.

I will however, try again later, because frankly, my life will feel terribly incomplete without knowing what was inside.

DIGIWORLD_RevStu - July 14, 2003 12:48 PM (GMT)
We have changed [SUB - INSERT TECHNICAL INFORMATION HERE] in an attempt to solve this baffling problem. (Baffling because so many people are managing to register and log in with no difficulty at all.) Have another go now. There is a possibility the act of changing may have messed up a few cookies, which would explain Zobbster's problem. Possibly.

Hey, you can't make an omelette without a few horrible technical hitches.

Pikachu - July 14, 2003 01:08 PM (GMT)
I got in first time, but now when I try to visit Digiworld.tv I get a message saying "Please stand by while Digiworld is untangled". Maybe they're fixing it right now.

:) Pikachu

Yes. Temporarily down while we try to sort the problem for everyone without messing things up for the people who could login okay, by having us fiddling around with the cookies and so on while they were online and getting everything hideously confused. Apologies for the interruption, normal service will be resumed as soon as we figure out what "normal" is.

DIGIWORLD_RevStu - July 14, 2003 02:07 PM (GMT)
Okay, try it now.

jamesds - July 14, 2003 02:18 PM (GMT)
Looks good. I've logged in a couple of times now without any problem.

Bassassin - July 14, 2003 07:55 PM (GMT)
My log is now in - and there was much rejoicing!

My regards & gratitude to Digi's crack team of pygmy spider monkeys for rewiring my account!

Spang!

thats what happens when you code a website in BASIC, same thing that happens when you code a game in BASIC, like Spyro, its goes spasticated

This is going to be a problem for me too for the exact same reason. In fact, the firewall guy came over and asked me that the fuck I was trying to pull through on Port 54, so I told him to shut up.

Works fine at home though.

Myself as well, annoyingly - though so far without the polite enquiries from "firewall guys". If you could use your collective skills and judgement to solve this riddle I'd be most grateful.

As far as I can tell these forums are hosted on Invision's servers, so I'm guessing there isn't a whole load of choice in such matters.

I could be wrong though of course, it has been known. Occasionally.

It's not really a problem for me since I work in the IT dept along with firewall guy, so every time he goes grumpy on me, I'll just tell him to go and do it somewhere else.

It could potentially be an issue for some people if firewall activity is monitored though.

Correct-oh-loo-lah. Here's the thing with the forum, since two several peoples have asked. When we set up the board, we said to Mr Invision, "We're probably expecting quite a lot of traffic, so we'd better have the pay version."

"No need", he retorted, "the free version has no bandwidth limit."

"Fair enough", we enthused, "no point in chucking money away needlessly, at least until we see how much of all this lovely goodwill translates into people giving us The Hard Cash."

However, should it become clear that Digiworld's demands are too much for a freebie board, we'll cough up the dosh, at which point lots of other features will, I believe, become available. In the meantime, er.

Well I'm back behind the work firewall and using the forums is a rather painful experience.

Turning off images in IE makes the pages load at normal speed (rather than waiting for all the images to time out and generate loads of errors at the firewall) - but unfortunately most of the graphic buttons don't have text information (although right clicking and looking at properties gives a clue) so it's a bit of a lottery to find the right one.

I suppose familiarity will breed tolerance.

Is it because you're using the free boards that I cannot set the number of topics per page to anything other than the forum default? The drop-down is there but it seems to get thrown away when I click the button.

Also, have you thought about combining the digi.tv and the forum usernames/passwords? I know I can manually set them the same, but it would just make sense to have them synchronised. I imagine that this would require you to host the forum on the same server as the main site, and possibly hack away at forum code, so I can understand if you don't want to do that.

Not so much "don't want to" as "have no idea how to". It was hard enough getting TV's famous The Internet to act like Teletext, man. Integration is something that may happen in the future when we get around to figuring it out.

pelago - July 15, 2003 10:13 AM (GMT)
I believe you want to make the forum only available to Special Friends, by password-protecting the forum and printing the password on weekend Digi. However, that kind of thing can probably get leaked out, so if you really want to restrict access to the forum you might want to look into this integration thing. I appreciate it is a Hard Thing, though.

Sorry, me again.

I've just realised/noticed something - this forum has adverts! So despite all your idealism about making Digi ad-free (which I completely support, and my money will be with you shortly), you're not quite there yet. Do the paid-for boards allow you to not have adverts?

DIGIWORLD_RevStu - July 15, 2003 10:35 AM (GMT)
We said Digiworld would be free of advertising funding and pressure from advertisers, and it will. We get no money from the little forum ads, and obviously Invision aren't going to demand that we add 20% onto any review scores, so in the meantime it's not an issue. As we've said, should the love currently in the house translate into cash in the bank, moving up to the pay forum is one of the things we'll be spending it on.
