Description: PS2 with chips. Open or wrapped?

Seamonster - July 24, 2003 02:59 PM (GMT)
Right, I looked into getting my PS2 chipped a while back and at the time it seemed to be a massively complicated process that didn't seem to work very well. So I didn't bother.

Now today's Mobile Light Force review has gotten me thinking that I really should do it. But what's the rumpus, man? How do I get my PS2 chipped in the most pain-free and effective manner, that won't result in disc-swapping or shamanistic rituals in order to get it to work? I don't care about playing copies, just imports at full-screen full-speed.

All help much appreciated. The first person to do my thinking for me gets a (virtual) bottle of gin.

Unless there have been any new developments since I got my PS2 chipped, then what you need is a Messiah chip (or one of the clones).

Plays everything you throw at it - PS1 and PS2 originals from any region on CD or DVD all play at their correct speeds and full screen. You have to double click the reset button to boot PS1 imports, but that's all.

There's some decent PS2 homebrew stuff you can play with it too now. The Master System emulator is pretty good, for one.

Don't know where you could get it fitted, though. The bloke who did mine was eaten by ELSPA's attack dogs shortly after I got it.

New developments there have been, the latest (and possibly greatest) modifixation of the PS2 is something called a flip-top mod.

It's cheap, looks like this and can be getted from loads of places. Just google 'PS2 flip top'.

I think you need to do disk swapping with those though, don't you?

At least with a flip top lid the Ps2 wont make a noise like an elderly gent waking from a flashback to WW1 every time you want to change disks.

Would that flip top thing allow a PS2 to play PSOne imports?

This is probably the chip you want... it's bloody expensive and you'd have to find someone to install it, but it plays PS1 and 2 imports and TOTALLY LEGITIMATE BACKUPS, as well as all region DVDs, without any disk swapping.

Flip-top mod does not aloow the playing on PSOne imports, so try the above if you can afford it.

Flip top mods are not so great, they cost £30-40 or you could get a messiah 2 with switch installed for £80, which runs everything, no boot disc.

I got mine for £175 with a messiah 1 chip , almost identical to messiah 2, but with no switch.
