Title: New Music?
sir_lucius_octavion_maxwell - July 21, 2005 01:53 AM (GMT)
I was wondering how we are going to have music for the new levels in new episodes. It would be great if we could have new music that still kepp the original CQ fell. Andrew Benson did a great job wiht it at digitalCafe.
Flemoid_Slayer - July 21, 2005 03:31 PM (GMT)
well i'm pretty sure boingo has a friend working on some quality new music ^_^
if not, i'm pretty sure thats the last of our concerns for tucq
sir_lucius_octavion_maxwell - July 21, 2005 03:59 PM (GMT)
I agree, but I believe the music and sound is the most essential part of creating the atmosphere of a game. But, we should get the technical stuff done first.
Boingo the Clown - July 24, 2005 08:02 PM (GMT)
Yeah. I've got Monkey on the job. He being kind of slow on it though.
Strife - July 25, 2005 07:11 PM (GMT)
Perhaps I could help with some of the music? I'm fairly experienced with MIDI (i'd say about 3 years). If you want, I can provide links to some examples.
Boingo the Clown - July 25, 2005 07:39 PM (GMT)
I would be glad to hear what you have to offer.
Strife - July 25, 2005 08:17 PM (GMT)
Okay then. :) Here is a list of some songs. They aren't exactly Chex Quest themed, but they're examples of my style.
Facility-type musicLava musicJungle to Forest-Fire musicCreepy Alien musicAirport musicI have a lot more songs in my junkyard of MIDI's, and with a few touch-ups, they may very well be worthy of a CQ level.
rrppo - July 25, 2005 08:36 PM (GMT)
Message Deleated because of my idiocy
Boingo the Clown - July 25, 2005 08:53 PM (GMT)
Sounds good.
If you can Chex Questize some of these, that would be great.
B)
Strife - July 25, 2005 11:19 PM (GMT)
Thank you. ^_^ I'll get to work on it.
The "Creepy Alien music", with a few tweaks, would be a great tune that would describe the wicked nature of the Flemoids.
The only problem I see is picking the right instruments, so that they'll fit in smoothly with Digital Cafe's tunes.
In the meantime, I have searched through my hard drive and found some more songs that sound pretty close to the cosmic tunes of Chex Quest...
Space adventure music - Could probably be the theme of the Intergalactic Federation of Cereals headquarters. Although i'll have to change the drums on this one; they were taken from parts of another song. :P
Space Blips - Could be used for a space station or other high-tech facility.
Hydro Works - Inspired by the Arboretum (E1M4). I'm thinking that this tune could be used in a place that has lots of water, perhaps some vegetation.
StoneyDumples - July 26, 2005 04:08 AM (GMT)
I like those a bunch, it's all really catchy. That's all that matters with video games, no?
xbolt - July 26, 2005 06:21 AM (GMT)
Very good! Music is actually a very important part of a game. I find that if a game doesn't have good music, it is much less interesting.
Boingo the Clown - July 26, 2005 01:39 PM (GMT)
Uhhh Xbolt?
Why are you using a picture of Sarauman (sp) to illustrate a quote from Dark Helmet?

Thanks. :)
In my opinion, music isn't necessarily the most important part of a game. It's actually a combination of factors; sound, music, graphics, gameplay, etc... But music still plays an important role. It sets the mood of the environment and makes the level more immersive to the player. ^_^

I found that on www.lotrspoofs.net. I thought it was funny so I used it. I've never heard of dark helmet before.
Boingo the Clown - July 26, 2005 06:44 PM (GMT)
He was the main villain in the movie
Spaceballs.
In one scene, Dark Helmet tricks Lone Star, the hero, into shaking hands with him and steals his schwartz ring, then says, "So, Lone Star, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb.".
Sound clip from the movie
StoneyDumples - July 26, 2005 07:17 PM (GMT)
Hehe, I loved that movie so much.
"I see your schwartz is as long as mine. But let's see how well you can handle it."
Lucius Octavion - July 26, 2005 07:30 PM (GMT)
Cmon your getting off topic guys! -_- ,
Now as far as the music goes, one element is that the music has to REPEAT itself.
Also, I might help with music, but my kekyboard might just have midi2 and WAV format.
Strife - July 28, 2005 12:28 PM (GMT)
I have a question; what program could I use to insert custom music into my home-made Chex Quest or Doom levels? I tried to use XWE, but it's not being cooperative. <_<
Lucius Octavion - July 28, 2005 04:02 PM (GMT)
Oh its simple.
In the Iwad, each music lump is has a name. Ex: map 01's music is named D_e1m1
So, if you want to put custom music, go to entry>load. Then load what .mus file you want to put in the game.
For example, if you wanted to replace the music for e1m1, name the lump D_e1m1. :)
Strife - July 28, 2005 04:43 PM (GMT)
Ah. Well, the Doom program I use can only modify level maps. What program would you recommend for modifying other aspects of the game (such as music)?
Boingo the Clown - July 28, 2005 04:59 PM (GMT)
If in doubt, then don't worry. I am able to add music.
If I like the tune, then I will most certainly find a good spot for it. B)
Strife - July 28, 2005 05:31 PM (GMT)
Alrighty then. :)
Of course, I'm currently designing my own level, entitled "The Outpost". I started it about 5 days ago, and it's about 50% complete. I'm sure i'll be able to fetch a program to change the music by then.
Which reminds me... I made some modifications to that "Creepy Alien music"...
Click hereI added the chorus from E1M5, and changed the pitch to match the rest of the song. I also removed some of the unnecessary instruments that were overloading the speakers.
I'm thinking that this song could be used for one of the evil villain's laboratories. Do you think it's finished, or should I tweak it some more?
rrppo - July 28, 2005 05:47 PM (GMT)
Nice music. Little doomish, so i think it might fit on a boss level, though I dunno about a lab
Boingo the Clown - July 28, 2005 05:58 PM (GMT)
Maybe E2M8: The Abandoned Lab.
Yup. I already have the storyline set up in my head for the rest of episode 2.
In fact, I have had the storyline for the whole thing in mind for a very long time.
Strife - July 28, 2005 06:13 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I remember reading about the plans for the missing episodes in the topic "Any level makers out there?".
I'm not sure where my level would fit as far as the story is concerned... if it's even worthy of being a TUCQ level. :P But we'll see once I finish it.
rrppo - July 28, 2005 06:35 PM (GMT)
Hey, if it's not worthy you could just realease it solo
Boingo the Clown - July 28, 2005 06:55 PM (GMT)
I have notice one thing in common with most of the original Chex Quest and CQ2 tunes.
There is a sort of bongo or cow bell beat in the background.
Adding a beat with the same intrument/s may be useful in getting the Chex Quest sound down pat.
Strife - July 28, 2005 07:19 PM (GMT)
Aha, good thinking. ^_^ I'll give it a shot...
Do the drums in
this version sound better?
Lucius Octavion - July 28, 2005 07:53 PM (GMT)
I just don't think that song sounds too much like CQ, but its just a matter of opinion
rrppo - July 28, 2005 07:55 PM (GMT)
It could ft, but it might need to be in a tough level
Lucius Octavion - July 28, 2005 08:23 PM (GMT)
Good Idea. So it make the player more nervous and suspenseful.
Maybe just tweak up the instrumentation a little more.
rrppo - July 28, 2005 08:25 PM (GMT)
Pesonally, I prefered then old drums
Strife - July 28, 2005 08:25 PM (GMT)
Okay then. Thanks for the input. ^_^
Typically, my style of music is a bit too dark for normal CQ levels, like you said. But with a little work, I should be able to make something bright and upbeat.
Lucius Octavion - July 28, 2005 08:34 PM (GMT)
Hey boingo!
Can you put some of the music from CQ 3 or is that also stolen?
rrppo - July 28, 2005 08:35 PM (GMT)
all stolen from tv shows & stuff
Rule of thumb: CQ3/scifience = Stolen
Boingo the Clown - July 28, 2005 09:31 PM (GMT)
Yeah. What he said.
Strife: May I suggest that you spend some time listening to the original CQ music with a close ear as to what make these tunes tick. Pay close attention to what kinds of instruments are being used most, the tempo, and what sorts of themes tend to repeat themselves in the various tunes.
Strife - July 28, 2005 11:33 PM (GMT)
^_^ Thank you for the advice. After all, it seems like the only reasonable thing to do if i'm to adopt Andrew Benson's style (he created the music in Chex Quest, right?).
How does
this sound? It's not that good, but it's closer to the Chex Quest style.
Boingo the Clown - July 28, 2005 11:50 PM (GMT)
Yes. That is a lot closer.
Strife - July 28, 2005 11:59 PM (GMT)
Excellent. :) Now i'm on the right track.
After a few more days of practice, I should be able to nail it.
