Title: Linux Distros
Description: Way Too Many Of Them!!!

Richie - November 11, 2004 04:28 AM (GMT)
Ok NTG *cough* guys, I got a question. I have tried a lot of Linux Distros and none of them have been good enough for me to switch for good. Don't get me wrong, I loved them all. But it's just so hard for someone like me, who's used WinDOZE all his life, to throw away everything I know about computers and start over. Here are the Distros I've used and what I think of them:

1. SuSE 9.1 Personal: Not bad. As a matter of fact, very good. Also very easy to get used to.

2. SuSE 9.2 Professional Live-CD: AWESOME! A huge improvement over 9.1! SO MANY PROGRAMS! SO FAST! SO SIMPLE! I LOVE IT!

3. Linspire OS: Wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. The look and feel is ok, but it's so darn hard to customize. Also, YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING! Whatever happened to open source?!?

4. Knoppix: Hate it. Hard to get used to, get a lot of errors, and just plain ugly.

5. Lycoris: Well, the setup was very easy. I setup a virtual machine and it was a piece of cake. But not something I would want to use forever.

There you have it. I probably will most likley go SuSE. The problem is, it costs money. Which is the thing I don't have a lot of. I could push and get it, but I kinda don't want to. (Hey, I'm a penny pincher) A friend reports to me that most of the time, SuSE Professional comes up for free download after a while. So I guess I'll take her word for it and wait for a while.

So anyhow, anything you recommend me to use in the meantime?

I use Slackware. I got sound support an Chex Quest an got XWE to run under a wine emulator so i have no complaints. ^_^

I use redhat on my server; very easy to install, tons of apps, but no sound. :(

I also use a PHLAK (Professional Hackers Linux Assult Kit) live CD on any computers that i need to test or need to tempraraly run linux on. It pretty much only uses commandline, but it says theres an X11 core and fluxbox in there somewhere....

I've heard good things about Red Hat. I'm just not a business.

What about Fedora Core? Is that any good?

NTG56 - November 11, 2004 04:06 PM (GMT)
heh, im not a business either ^_^ im using fedora core 2, it is cool but i dont like not having sound. Right now it doesnt matter much, i moved the harddrive into a new case w/a new board and it doesnt like the grafix drivers so i cant start X11 :(

But, im still ok, i got the thing setup with a trafic monitor so i can see whos on the server etc; pretty cool.

Oh yeah, forgot to say that Linspire from what ive heard sux. U r not alone in that opinion. That is except the AOL lam3rz who like it. ^_^

I havent tried Knoppix but it sounds a lot like PHLAK....u prolly wouldnt like it. :D

I havent tried SuSE yet either. It sound cool though...

Debian is another major distro that noone mentiond yet, it looks cool enough, but its too freakin big! Like 8cd's! X( I admire it only cuz sombody hacked it to run on an XBOX! ^_^

Speaking of open source free stuff, all of what i mentiond for my recommendations here is free.

Cool! I just may give Debian a try. Got a URL?

SuSE (http://www.suse.com) rocks man, you HAVE to give it a try! They made KDE look user-friendly!

i usually try once or twice a day to boot from that friggin cd and it never works

Richie - November 20, 2004 05:27 AM (GMT)
When your computer is booting up, do you it do this:

Checking boot record on CD-Rom ...

A_Jax91 - November 21, 2004 02:03 AM (GMT)
well i set it to cd boot first but it just boots with windoze anyways, do i have to save this iso image file thing as like a dll fille when i get it or sumthin?

EDIT>> ok i tried it again and it sets for a minute and then says: press F1 to retry boot, press F2 to go to setup

NTG56 - November 21, 2004 03:07 AM (GMT)
ohhhhhhhh yer just buring the thing straight to a disk!

What u get is an ISO image, whatcho gotta do is get an application that can read it and write it to a disk. Try cdburnerxp pro. No i dont have a url! ^_^

A_Jax91 - November 21, 2004 07:24 PM (GMT)
well i went to the sit to try and download it but it just sits there when i click the download link (it may be my computer) are there any other programs?

EDIT>> ok i got it to work and it actually started bootong from the cd but now in the middle of loading it stops and acts like im sposed to give it a commmand, and it doesnt do anything cuz i dont know what to type

NTG56 - November 21, 2004 11:53 PM (GMT)
does it give u some sort of prompt? like "login" or "boot"? Seeing as i may not be on here for awhile, heres what i suggest, if its a "boot:" prompt, just press enter. If its "login:", type "root" (w/out quotes of cousre) and then at the "password:" prompt just press enter. Good luck. :)

A_Jax91 - November 22, 2004 12:14 AM (GMT)
well i tried hitting enter but it just gives a nother line that says the same thing, but i'll try "root"
