Title: Munch munch munch!
Description: Should I actually have Chex Guy eating?

Boingo the Clown - July 20, 2004 03:42 PM (GMT)
It is just a thought, but I was thinking about a slight trick to have the player make eating noises whenever he picks up fruit, vegetables, or a bowl of chex.

It stemmed from the existing trick I am using on E1M3 to have the bunson burners with beakers have a combination of transparent and nontransparent sections. Like the bunson burners with beakers, the Chex Breakfast is also transparent, and looks aweful, so I thought I would use the same trick, putting an object with an opaque sprite along with the existing power up. Now, the problem with this is that the Cereal can be picked up, so I would have to have another object that can be picked up as well, but not affect the player in any way.

Luckily, there are a number of Heretic things that can be picked up, but are not used by DooM, because their functions are specific to Heretic. In addition, these objects make a sound when picked up. I figured that if I changed this sound into a munching sound or "Mmmmm-mmm!" I could use it to have the player sound like he is actually eating the fruit, vegetables, or cereal.

The question is, "Would this be a good addition to the game, or would it just sound corny?". That's where you come in. Please let me know what you think.

Sounds like a cool idea.

Yeah, it would just add to the 'professional' feel :)

I have wanted that since I dont know how long!

Agreed. I've never eaten an apple and heard my chewing sound like "BPFH". I love the idea.

Sounds awesome.

I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that I managed to put in a nice munching sound, just as I had hoped.

The bad news is that I can only use it with the bowl of Chex cereal. Here's why:

The object that makes the munching sound (formerly Heretic's mystic urn) can be picked up by the player, no matter what the state of his health is. The Chex breakfast (DooM's soulsphere) can also be picked up no matter what the state of the player's health is, but the fruit (stimpack) and vegies (medkit) can only be picked up if the player's health is less than 100%. This would mean that the player would still make the munching sound, even when he can not pick up the fruit or vegies because his health it >= 100%.

There is a little more good news. The new object is not transparent, so I just gave it the same sprite as the cereal. No more transparent cereal for me boy!

well, maybe the chex warrior is...
chewing...
his... cud...
-_-

Loremaster - July 22, 2004 12:27 AM (GMT)
lol. Maybe just snacking? You could have it re-spawn automatocally despite options until it's linking item is picked up, if that's possible.

It has been pointed out to me that the message "Picked up Mystic Urn" appears when the player collects his cereal. This is because the mystic urn is the Heretic Object I have been using together with the DooM soulsphere in order to do the munching sound. The munching sound is caused by a Heretic sound that is used when an inventory object is picked up. If this is a problem, I can simply switch over to using the quartz flask, which does not appear to put up a message, at least not in my Heretic thing test wad.

The Mystic Urn seems to pop up more when you are playing a Multiplayer game.

I've never had this problem in Single Player.

still, is there ever a time you would run over a supercharge breakfast without picking it up? (as in are you always 200% health ever time you encounter one? i doubt it)

It's happened to me a lot. I'm very fastidious about not getting slimed.

That's a great idea! One thing: is the munching sound from Heretic or are you making it original? I have another idea too! Why don't you make it so when you shoot a Flemoid, he drops something that you shouldn't pick up. Like a cigarette.

Cigarette = :sick:
Fruit and Veggies = :wow:

Boingo the Clown - August 4, 2004 01:57 PM (GMT)
The actual sound is not from Heretic. I picked it up off the net, then edited it until is sounded the way I wanted it to. I may add a swallowing noise to the end of it some time.

The sound which I replaced, ARTIUP, is from Heretic. It is the sound that is heard whenever the player picks up a special item that can be added to the player's inventory. Since the player has no inventory in DooM mode, these itens are useless, but the player still picks them up, and they still make the ARTIUP sound. That is how I make the cereal go "munch munch munch". I place one of these artifacts on top of the cereal, so the two items are picked up at the same time. If you play the game with item respawn on, the cereal will come back, but not the munch. The cereal will be transparent, and not make the munching sound.

Many of these useless inventory items may be utilized in the game as scenery objects.

would it be possible 2 do the whole cigarette thing? it would be cool and really fit with chex quests messege

Boingo the Clown - August 5, 2004 11:45 AM (GMT)
Okay folks, I figured out how to replace text strings in the Heretic text table. It actually wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. The message "Mystic Urn" has been replaced with "Chex cereal", which as somewhat better. ;)

You always pick up the supercharge breakfast, even with 200% health. It just doesn't increase the health anymore.

Koolgool - August 26, 2004 04:46 PM (GMT)
Yes! Have the Chex guy eating!

Boingo the Clown - October 16, 2004 01:53 AM (GMT)
Since I have already added the munching sound, I guess it would be a waste of time to leave this poll open. ;)

Thread closed.
