Title: Know any good games?

xbolt - December 18, 2007 05:36 AM (GMT)
My boss gave me $25 to buy my own present with. And so, I decided to buy a new game with it. But, I dunno which one.

So I figured I would ask you guys for recommendations. What do you think I should get?

Manny Cav - December 18, 2007 05:42 AM (GMT)
I have no idea what games you have, which ones you like, what game systems you have, if you want an older game or a newer game, etc. $25 limits you to an older game, a "budget game," a bestseller ("quality game" that sold a lot of copies, so the price is reduced), a PC game, etc.

Replica - December 18, 2007 06:05 AM (GMT)
Metroid prime man!!!!!!

xbolt - December 18, 2007 06:38 AM (GMT)
Sorry, I should have said the platform and genre. It'll be for the PC, and I always prefer first-person shooters.

And about the price, for a good game, I don't mind spending a few bucks out of my pocket. ;)

@Replica: Metroid Prime is a console-only series isn't it? That won't work...

Loremaster - December 18, 2007 06:58 AM (GMT)
Hm, fav's from the past....

Well, you gotta tell us what system.

I think Neverwinter Nights is cheap, and you can pick up the Diamond edition with all the expansions and stuff. That was a GREAT game [assuming you aren't one of those "DND IS THE DEVIL'S GAME!!!" wierdos]. Mechwarrior 4, if you can find it, was also fun [though you NEED a joystick]

If you have a joystick, then try digging around for either X-Wing, TIE Fighter, or Freespace 2: Colossus. All were GREAT combat flight sims [Though nix that freespace one. The company released it a freeware a while back]

xbolt - December 18, 2007 07:52 AM (GMT)
Neverwinter Nights was already on my list of possibilities. ;) And it's maker, BioWare, is heavily on my good side after playing the masterpiece that is MDK2.

The Orange Box also looks good, but a big problem with that is I hear horror stories about Steam and dial-up...

Also, I've gone through three joysticks, and could get NONE of them to work right. I still have no idea what I was doing wrong... So, joysticks are out.

20$=The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - Game of the Year edition

Best 20$ I ever spent. Serious.

Boingo the Clown - December 18, 2007 12:20 PM (GMT)
Check out this classic game.

Wargames (movie clip)

Manny Cav - December 18, 2007 01:52 PM (GMT)
If the requirements, as I understand, are as follows:
  • FPS
  • must be for the PC
  • no joystick
Then I can't help you. The only FPS I've played for the PC is the obvious one. :P

Allen Walker - December 18, 2007 02:32 PM (GMT)
I agree with Rushnerd. Morrowind is the best game you can get with that money.

Kuwabara - December 18, 2007 02:47 PM (GMT)
I third that motion.

xbolt - December 18, 2007 06:58 PM (GMT)
Seeing as I already own Morrowind, that doesn't help me much. :P

Dvader0086 - December 18, 2007 07:23 PM (GMT)
another one would Be Unreal Tournament 3... Gets my seal of aprovel!

Lucius Octavion - December 18, 2007 08:16 PM (GMT)
Return to Castle Wolfenstein may also be a possibility, if you can still find it.

Richie - December 18, 2007 08:20 PM (GMT)
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion <- I COMMAND YOU!

xbolt - December 18, 2007 08:23 PM (GMT)
I have Oblivion and Return to Castle Wolfenstein, too... Heh, it seems that I have all the good games already!

Manny Cav - December 18, 2007 09:17 PM (GMT)
Okay, I'm not going to sound very smart for saying this, but -- what is "Elder Scrolls?"

atariangamer - December 18, 2007 09:20 PM (GMT)
Limiting to fps and pc and no joystick with a 25$ budget kinda limits your self severly. IDK the price, but a Halo would be good, but long. I like the idea of geting one of the Lucasfilms star wars games, but to find it in a store would be murder. Dark forces is pretty good, based of a engine edited from doom. (pretty good work, if you can get it)

In general, a good game to mess with is PocketTanks. we play that on our school network, and its awesome.

If your a retro gamer, or a bargain hunter, try a flea market. I once found my dream laptop (one of the old Texas Instuments "Grey Box" looking things) for 5$, 3.1 installed, 6 gig HD, CD\Floppy, network card, and sound. Plus, many game kiosks have things from atari 2600 to ps3 and everything inbetween (including sega saturn and philips cd-i) and games for pretty good prices

He said 25$ Richie, also have you played TEH:III?
I die when people haven't played that one but have played IV.

No, its fine. I'm sure wikipedia can give you a more detailed answer then what I can give.

Quarkz - December 19, 2007 09:11 PM (GMT)
Halo: Combat Evolved- PC version

had to throw that out there

Allen Walker - December 19, 2007 09:25 PM (GMT)
I'm not going to say very much, so I won't start a flame war, but IMO Halo is a good game, but THAT good. As in, its not 9+ awards worthy.

Dvader0086 - December 19, 2007 09:53 PM (GMT)
Halo is a good game but, It's old and does not work on vista...

Lucius Octavion - December 19, 2007 11:34 PM (GMT)
Quake Wars is great but it's not under $25.

I almost hear as many people say the Halo series is the most overrated series as I do people who say it is the best. I, of course, am indifferent to M-rated violent games, but the all-time record seller in entertainment history known as Halo 3 speaks for itself.

Kuwabara - December 20, 2007 02:50 PM (GMT)
I found once a collection of the first 3 Quake games at Wal-Mart for like, $20.

That's Morrowind, right? Yes, I have played that.

Lucius Octavion - December 23, 2007 06:03 PM (GMT)
Do you have F.E.A.R? It's a good game but it's kind of dull in the long run.

atariangamer - December 23, 2007 09:48 PM (GMT)
This is getting close to christmas but... what systems do you have? PS3, 2, or 1? Gamecube or wii? Xbox 360 or just plain xbox, or do you just have a PC? (I won't ask about anything older, its impossible to find games easily for them)

Maybe you could try for the Ghostbusters game comming out later this year (but thats a long ways off, and its gonna cost more than 25, AND its only for ps3 and xbox 360, PLUS you have to like ghostbusters)

xbolt - December 25, 2007 08:24 AM (GMT)
Nope, just a PC.

I've heard of FEAR before... Dull in the long run, eh?

atariangamer - December 25, 2007 01:29 PM (GMT)
In my opinion, all the PC games now aren't good. The best thing though might be to get gametap. Thats alot of good games for pc.

EDIT: Now if you could find the first Quakes...

Anonymous - December 25, 2007 04:11 PM (GMT)
If you don't have Quake III. I'm going to kill you (with words!).

In terms of level design yes. However, I found the game to be better than Doom 3 or Quake 4.

A lot of it has to do with the way it feels. First of all, it actually feels like you are walking as the player, and the weapons feel realistic and powerful. You have melee attacks, and the combat mechanics are incredible. The enemy AI is also extremely intelligent. And also, you can see your feet. The story is kind of like a mystery but it gets a lot of influence from Japanese horror. The sound is really good and it is very atmospheric and creepy. And you have this unique super-reflexes ability.

Kuwabara - December 26, 2007 05:45 PM (GMT)
I saw some vids of that game.. It looks like freakin' Sadako is stalking you in that game. (the girl from the Ring, the one in the video.)

xbolt - December 27, 2007 03:47 AM (GMT)
Well, I was in Wal-Mart, and I saw the Orange Box sitting on the shelf of PC games. And I decided to take the plunge, and hope my dial-up can survive Steam...

I actually like Steam. It's definitely bloated, but I have 1.5 GB of RAM, so I can't find any noticeable lag. Let us know how it works out.

atariangamer - December 27, 2007 07:21 PM (GMT)
The orange box got a good rating in Game Informer...I think its a good choice. But, yeah, the Internet might be the only thing in your way of good online gaming.

Anonymous - December 27, 2007 11:18 PM (GMT)
Good choice.

Portal/Half-Life 2 FTW!!!
