Title: Difficulty Levels
Description: How do they work?

How do the difficulty levels in CQ differ? I know that the flemoids come back on Super Slimey, but what's the difference between the first four?

I think the first four just make the flemoids faster.

After looking at the maps, I can tell you that the difficulty setting make almost no difference at all in Chex Quest.
In DooM, the difficulty setting affects which monsters and power ups appear in the game, but it is the maps that tell the game which monsters should appear. Each game object can be set to appear (or not appear) at the various difficulty levels, and most DooM games affect the difficulty by having fewer monsters and more power ups appear in the lower skill levels, and having more monsters and fewer power ups in the higher skill levels.
All the objects in Chex Quest are set to appear at all difficulty levels so the only differences are:
On the easiest skill level, you get double the normal amount of ammo when you pick it up.
On the highest skill level (Nightmare/Super Slimey) the monsters move faster and shoot more often, and respawn about 30 seconds to a minute after they are killed. The player also gets double ammo on this skill level.
One of my plans for TUCQ Phase II is to implement difficulty levels in the original levels.

Do only the flemoids that you zorched respawn, or do extra ones appear? To me, it seems like the latter.
Boingo the Clown - July 31, 2003 07:47 PM (GMT)
Only the ones you have zorched.
Dacicus - July 31, 2003 08:41 PM (GMT)
Yeah. I tried zorching only the flemoid who guards the blue key on the Landing Zone. It came back within a minute, like you said.
It's interesting that they respawn in their original location. I don't know how that fits within the storyline. The introductory video says that the flemoids appear on contact with nutritious material. Applying it to the game, that would mean that nutritious substances are always found in the exact same location within a level.
Maybe I went too far by applying the respawning to the introduction.

It has nothing to do with the storyline. It is just a leftover from DooM.

LOL, Do you think they actually put that much work into a free promotional game? I mean, the storyline kinda sucked.....
Then they made a free expansion set to the game and called it a sequel... whats with that? CQ2 was only a mission pack, nothing more. You can hardly call it a sequel. Same with CQ3. CQ4 could be called a sequel, though, because it runs on a different engine and it separate....
The main problem with CQ games is that even with the "first three" (really one with 2 expansions) combined, its still a waaaaaaaaaaaaay too short game.

There are acually more flemoids then usual. on cq extended, on e2m1, the first flemoid that you see is 1 commonus, theres 7-9 on the 2nd to hardest one. ( Im afraid to play nightmare [ superslimy] )ive never really paid atention to the other levels though. and i think you lose health and armor faster, or more at a time, then at easier difficulty levels

What was at all good about it? it was incredibly cheesy and 100% promotional! I mean, c'mon, do you really think they'd resort to sending them back to their own dimension when they'd just return?

I am planning on implementing difficulty levels in TUCQ.
I will not be copying from CQE, so whatever I do will not match it.

Froghawk, I actually kinda liked the story. Oh sure, they coulda smoothed it out, wrapped up some loose ends, but it was good. Not as good as the story in the X-Wing novels or the Battletech game, but still good. Remember, it was meant for the wee ones. And I have an Idea for Episode 3 of TUCQ. How about a huge 'space hulk' [can't use that term exactly, copyright GW] that is infested with Flemoids? Just a thought. [Me play too much Space Hulk SP and TUCQ late at night. Me need a coffe latte now]
