Title: Chex Quest 10 year aniversary
Description: Your first CQ expirience

newstead_jr - December 31, 2005 09:51 PM (GMT)
Hey everybody! As of midnight tonight, we will cross into 2006 and thus begin the tenth aniversary of the original release of CQ (1996). Because of this, I figured someone should start a topic to talk about your first CQ expirience.
My first was when I was 4 years old, I dug two copies of the game out of my cereal. Since I considered stuff like this (ie, Happy Meal toys) to be a Godsend, I saved it until I actually had a computer (3 years later. Wow, I had no life).
Anyway, I could never get past the first level until my best friend enlightend me on the cheat codes. Of course, I still had to find out where the end of each level was, so...
Anyway, Happy 10th Birthday Chex Quest!

Strife - January 1, 2006 03:26 PM (GMT)
Wow, 10 years have passed...

Anyway, I first heard about Chex Quest from watching the commercial. Being a small child, I was pretty gullible when it came to advertisements, so I asked my mum if we could get a box of Chex the next time we go to the store. So, it happened, and vwallah! I got the CD.

I had actually played Doom 2 before I played Chex Quest, an since CQ was less violent and more cartoony (not to mention it's space themed!), I enjoyed it more than Doom.

Sometime around the year 2000, I had lost the CD, and after weeks of searching, even in the attic and basement, I gave up. I was never able to play Chex Quest again until last year, when I discovered the Chex Quest Fan Forums. :)

xbolt - January 1, 2006 06:22 PM (GMT)
I just looked at Chex.wad and it was last modified on: October 31, 1996 at 5:44 PM.

So Boingo, make sure you release beta 4 on Halloween!

newstead_jr - January 1, 2006 09:59 PM (GMT)
Boingo said there would be no more betas, but maybe TUCQ phase 4 will be released on Oct 31!
(Halloween, heh heh... Mommy, the monsters aren't under my bed anymore, they're throwing slime at me...)

rrppo - January 1, 2006 10:43 PM (GMT)
Anyone makeing a CQ special anniversery wad?

Strife - January 1, 2006 11:06 PM (GMT)
Uhh... not me... *shifty eyes* B)

since5 - January 1, 2006 11:50 PM (GMT)
Aww I should have waited and released mine now :(
Oh well.
Anyways, I was 5 at the time (uhhh lol gave away the mystery of my name much?) and I got a box of chex just like always and I was pouring myself a bowl for breakfast and *plop* out comes Chex Quest. How I was ignorant enough not to look at the front of the box before eating to know it was in there, I don't know. But I ran to my dad and had him install it on our new (fanfare please) WINDOWS 95 COMPUTER :o
And we even got Chex Quest 2 with our account on(fanfare again) AOL 3.0. Never thought I'd be making maps for it :P

mcmire - January 3, 2006 08:26 AM (GMT)
Wow... 10 years... it's hard to believe! It feels like yesterday that my brother and I opened up the box and found the CD... we installed it and were hooked right away. Then we lost it for the longest time... I think the first time I found out about it again was through the Scifience Studios version... then I found the "real" version, and then I stumbled upon these forums about two years ago. I can't believe Chex Quest has been around this long!

Loremaster - January 4, 2006 04:44 AM (GMT)
I was 8. It was my first real computer game [unless you count the old DOS version of a B-17 simulator that I couldn't get working for years].

Man, has it really been 10 years??? seems like just last week I was eating cereal and looking at the CD that had just popped out of the box. ^_^

We SHOULD do sommat special.

rrppo - January 4, 2006 05:03 AM (GMT)
We should cooperativly work on a wad, where mappers could map, and other people could develop sprites or textures. That way the people who can map, map, the people that can't map draw, the people who can't draw, dehack, the people who can't dehack, write backstory, the people who can't write, think of ideas, the people that can't think, beta tes, and the people that can't play chex quest, get the heck out of this forum.

xbolt - January 4, 2006 06:13 AM (GMT)
YES!!! LET'S DO IT!

rrppo - January 4, 2006 04:25 PM (GMT)
Allright, then. That puts me and Xbolt as volunteers. Anyone else?
Remember, of course that you can have no skills at any of this, and still find a way to help.

newstead_jr - January 4, 2006 07:35 PM (GMT)
I could come up with a backstory. Should we try to incorperate the 10yrs (ie, It's 10yrs after the first flemoid attack and...)

Strife - January 5, 2006 08:59 PM (GMT)
I'm good with maps, music, and drawing, but I still need to work on my Chex Quest style. I'm currently working on a wad of levels which I plan to submit for TUCQ, but if they don't get accepted or aren't used, I'd be happy to make some for this joint project. :)

newstead_jr - January 6, 2006 02:20 AM (GMT)
OK guys, tell me what you think of this for a backstory. It's 10 years after the first flemoid invasion on Bazoik, and although the Chex Warrior has banished them from the Chex universe, the researchers of the Chex Squadron have saved everything about them: zorchers, pictures, even rocks from the volcano...where a batch of flemoid legs are waiting to hatch...
Now the flemoids are not only on the Chex Space Station (see the original intro video), they are hijacking the transport technology and bringing their own kind into the Station. There's only one man (erm, piece of cereal?) that can stop them...The Chex Warrior!

Well, that's what I've got. What do you think?

rrppo - January 6, 2006 02:52 AM (GMT)
Cool. It could use a twist though - for example a conspiracy where some of the members of the chex headquarters are traitors.

How many levels should we aim for?

Also, if anyone has skill at movie animation, in intro *would* be nice (though I doubt it would happen).
Also, if Boingo gives permission, his dehacked and graphics might be useful.

We should start a checklist, so that the different contributers can sign up for roles. Here is a (VERY) rough one:

What if after the first invasion came and went then maybe the original Chex warrior became a tyrant and made the other cereals(besides Chex)work very very hard for minimal reward like Big Brother in 1984 and the other cereals snap and creates a army of flemoids via Alchemy so you have to both take down the Alchemic Flemoids and arrest the traitor cereals?(huh,im making the Chex peaces be like Big Brothers Party)

Loremaster - January 6, 2006 06:13 AM (GMT)
I volunteer. Just a few questions about mapping....

1. What engine
2. 3D sectors or no?
3. If yes to above, will we have folks "spiffing up" maps, or no?

I ask 3 because I'm good at making the levels, but not so good at the "eye candy" and such. so if 3 is a yes, then I can make a level, and give notes to a person who spiffs up levels on what should go where on the major things (i.e. 3D floors and such)

rrppo - January 6, 2006 02:26 PM (GMT)
1. Since most people here are familiar with legacy, I'd say we should probably stick with that.
2, Sure, if you want.
3. It really depends on if anyone volunteers.

I'm not sure making the Chex Warrior a tyrant would be the best idea, however, thanx very much for the imput and I will gladly listen to any other ideas (in response to rrppo I was thinking about having the scientist be behind the invasion (ie, brought the flemoids over to aid his quest for universal domination then enlisted the Chex Warrior to send them back so he could double cross them)

rrppo - January 7, 2006 12:36 AM (GMT)
Very intresting...
BTW, anyone who wants to make a level should justr post some info, then make it.

xbolt - January 11, 2006 06:10 AM (GMT)
I'll make a map, but I'll wait until the story is finished so I know what sort of map to make.

Ocarina654 - January 12, 2006 12:25 AM (GMT)
Personally, I think it would be awesome if the wad was compatible with the original chex.exe! I'm not certain if you can play other wads on it, but playing in Vanilla CQ with the Flemoids not attacking each other, green screen flashes instead or Red, the right quitting phrases (ya know, the things it says as you say to quit...)

I'd also like to contribute, but I'm not super good at anything. I could collaborate with newstead_jr on the story, together coming up with something thats a fitting throwback to the original, but also shows us how things have changed in these short 10 years.

I map a bit, not too great. I have no artistic skills. I can't make music...

I can shure play games though!

TBOL3 - January 13, 2006 01:01 AM (GMT)
Can I make the backstory movie!!!!(I like making movies more then wads)

Anyway, when I first played chex quest, it acually was my aunt who bought the box and didn't have a computer, so we got it!

chexfan2000 - January 13, 2006 03:09 PM (GMT)
I'm not much of a gamemaker (as many people have realized by now) but I do remember first playing CQ. My friend, known on this board as LAZ Master for a bit, found the CD at a used book store. I played it at his house, and got hooked. Then I "borrowed" the CD. LAZ, buddy, if you're reading this.... YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BACK! IT IS MINE!! MUAHAUHAUHAUHAUHH!!

TBOL3 - January 13, 2006 06:02 PM (GMT)
Dosen't the CD install itself onto the computer, so you no longer nead it? That's what our's did.

chexfan2000 - January 15, 2006 02:17 AM (GMT)
Yes, it does. However, you need the CD to get that hidden chexified DooM wad. I borrowed the CD to get it, and he moved away before I could return it to him.

TBOL3 - January 15, 2006 03:48 AM (GMT)
I had the CD but lost it.
I want to see this *wad*, can you e-mail it to me?
billybob1091@yahoo.com

newstead_jr - January 15, 2006 05:35 PM (GMT)
My search for the Doom wad on the original CD has failed also.
Also, anyone with ideas for the backstory please PM me, I'm running out of my own!

Newstead, could you post your draft of the synopsis here? I could probably do some work and make it into a intro movie script, plus it could let mappers make some levels.

TBOL - Could you email your best movie to viciousparrots@yahoo.com? I can't get on your site.

Mappers - Please do not use resources from TUCQ - if you do, put the resources into the wad, don't merge the whole thing.

That's what I've got so far, and I've been toying with the idea of the scientist being behind the invasion

Can we just make it a sort of, "addon" to TUCQ so that all the textures and lighting things and decoration is still there and all we need to do is run this wad along with TUCQ from the legacy launcher? That would be a much more simple solution. Then all that needs to be done is change the maps and such...

rrppo - January 16, 2006 12:15 AM (GMT)
The dehacked work is slightly annoying, and should be changed.
I'm working on the script.

Lucius Octavion - January 17, 2006 04:51 AM (GMT)
Oh you mean with all his heretic hacks and stuff...

GameMaster - January 22, 2006 10:06 PM (GMT)
I've got a good backstory:

It hasn't been long since the first flemoid attack on Bazoik. Not much later the flemoids invaded Chex City. As you know, the Chex Warrior banished them all to their own dimension. Unknown to him, a flemoid survived the zorch blast and has begun reproducing itself ever since......
10 years later the Chex Lab have studied flemoid DNA and have some samples of their genetic makeup. With the data they had, the Chex Lab created flemoid clones. At the exact moment, the flemoids surviving Chex Quest 2 attack the lab. Some unknown force merge the flemoids with the newly cloned flemoids to form a new kind: Super Flemoids. They are bigger, faster, and stronger than any kind of flemoid. They even make the Flembrane look small and weak. They destroy the Chex Lab and begin to invade a more advanced Chex City once again. Can the Chex Warrior stop them a third time? Or has he grown too old to battle flemoids? We shall see...........

Like it?

rrppo - January 22, 2006 10:25 PM (GMT)
Yeah - but the backstory's been finalized, and the movie's in production :P

GameMaster - January 23, 2006 02:16 AM (GMT)
Rats........

But that can be a good sequel or something.

TBOL3 - January 23, 2006 04:55 AM (GMT)
Ya, really good, but let's work on THIS game.

But it does sound cool
