Title: Set Your Goals!
Description: What are your hopes and dreams?
Shiken - September 16, 2007 10:16 AM (GMT)
I don't know if we have a thread like this, and I just thought of it randomly. What are your goals in life? Do you aspire to be something different? I think it would be really cool if we put our aspirations in one thread, and maybe come back to it a year later to see where we are. XD
As for me:
I really hope to be to be octolingual (8 languages? or should I just use multilingual? XD) by the time I'm 30. So far I know Vietnamese (native language), English, sort of Japanese (but still learning), and currently learning Chinese. I still haven't touched on: Cantonese, Korean, French, German. My Dad is sexlingual, and it's always fascinated me (he knows: Chinese, Cantonese, Vietnamese, English, Taiwanese, and a separate dialect of Chinese that very few people speak)
By the time I graduate from college, I want to have found a place to live in Japan and begin an English teaching career there, and later on in the future a possible translator job.
I want to travel all around the world. There are so many places that I want to visit and possibly even live for a while. The number of places I want to travel to is uncountable. Some of the places include Singapore, Paris, Germany, Egypt, Italy, Korea, and Vietnam. I really hope that I can visit all of these places in the near future. :D
So, Wonderland: what are your hopes and dreams?
also if this is a duplicate thread, please merge/lock
tofast4yall2003 - September 16, 2007 10:35 AM (GMT)
Well, while my hopes and dreams aren't set in stone yet, I definatley want to travel. I've only been to about six states my entire life, and I've never been out of the country. I'd love to travel to Italy, and obviously Japan. I've talked to a friend about living with them in Japan, which leads to...
I'm going to college next year. I'm going to continue working at Best Buy until I have enough money. Enough money for me to have a knowledge of what exactly I'm going to do. Either late this year or early next year, I'm going to start attending Community College in Bucks County and transfer my credits sometime next year to Temple. Anyways, Temple has a Japanese campus, which would be perfect if I plan to go there. I'd definatley want to check it out.
I want to learn another language. Possibly several, although it's easier said than done. My best friend is friend, and she's been teaching me a few phrases, but I'd like to eventually be able to learn the French lanuage. The other two languages I'd like to learn are obviously Japanese and Italian. If I plan on moving to Japan and...playing these games/reading these doujins/manga/wathching these raws etc etc, it'll be good for me. And Italian, so I can communicate with my family that I have overseas. A lot of my family in Italy isn't very well-versed in English, so learning Italian would be a great skill to have. So a life goal for me is to know four languages for various reasons. :P
As for career goal, It's flucuating as I speak. I've pondered about potentially becoming a wrestler, but I've thrown that out the window and it has a virtually 2% chance of ever coming to fruition. I've always wanted to become a writer, since not to start a banquet for myself, but I think it's one of my most gifted crafts. A lot of people think I'm very skilled in that aspect, so who knows! A lot of people also say that I should go into acting, and I've been tempted to take a few courses but I've never had the chance. It may be something that I should look into for the future.
Other than that, I just want to life a happy life, maybe raise a family, and spend it with the friends I have right now and some new ones. I just want to have a fun life, enjoying whatever I do. ^_^
And die the way I lived. Like Scruffy.
Tyketsu - September 16, 2007 11:11 AM (GMT)
Career wise I'm not completely sure what I want to do , but my aim is somewhat around freelance computer mechanic or something similar :P
As for my other dreams is to begin my own recordshop or hardrock lounge , it's somewhat hard to realize but we'll see.
Also I was considering taking Art Classes later on , seemed fun and interesting to me :P
And life wise I really like to live in Austria or Germany for some years, in a nice quiet village without stress.
But I'm not really a person who think ahead too much , so I'll see where I land and take it from there ^_^
GUTS!! - September 16, 2007 12:03 PM (GMT)
Goals for me change pretty often. I've realised I've got kind of a short attention span.
I
would definitely like to be able to be creative and make a living off that, writing or drawing or whatnot. At the moment, this involves making my website, which I would love to become popular eventually. There's not much there right now in terms of content, but
ALLOW ME TO USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO PLUG IT AGAIN. I'm hoping that my overall vision will become a bit more clear in the next few pages.

That's awesome. I wanna know a lot of languages too.
Currently more or less fluent: Slovenian, English, German.
Learning: Japanese
Want to learn: Czech, Croatian, Russian, Hungarian, French, Sanskrit, Latin, Dutch, and maybe more if I find something that sounds awesome.
As for an occupation I was daydreaming about being a German teacher in Japan. Psychology is also interesting, as well as biology.
But as for proper goals, I have none. ^_^
tedbannana - September 16, 2007 01:33 PM (GMT)
i think that no matter what, i will always be writing, performing, and experimenting with music. i would love to have a career based upon it, but i havent quite figured that out yet.
although, there is one thing that may happen in the future. about a year ago, i thought that it might be interesting to start a production company, because i want to start several bands, and i have some ideas that i may or may not write into novels and screen plays. i also know several musicians, writers, and artists, and i think it would be cool to do business with them. anyways, a couple months ago, a good friend of mine (that i have been hanging out with a little less than a year) told me that he wanted to start a production company, and told me several ideas that fit perfectly with my own. so now 3 friends of mine and i are planning this out, and starting to write more, whether it be screen plays, short stories, music, whatever. i think it would be totally amazing if we could do this, and make enough to live off of. the awesome thing about this is that we all seem pretty interested in it, and just about all of my close friends could be involved in it in some way.
so for this, i am going to go back to school next semester, and start taking business and possible film classes. i could use a little more experience musically, but i would prefer to learn it my own way.
as for goals, i have a few personal ones, but my main ones are music related. i want to learn the banjo and the mandolin, learn to properly use a slide on the guitar, and i am always trying to improve as a songwriter. as of right now, i would love to join the band that i mentioned earlier, and start a couple more, as my current band may or may not ever practice again. i am also thinking of starting an indie folk band, and an experimental noise/music band...

My plans right now are to work for another year and then move off to college(hopefully with Kristin  ). I am probably going to get a degree in English and teaching so I can go teach at a high school somewhere. I'd also like to learn Japanese, but I am rather hesitant to go into a college course with the tiny bit of knowledge I have now.
My favorite creative hobby would be writing(as most of you could probably tell by now :P ), and I would really like to do something with that. Like actually finish a novel. Or hell, finishing anything would be nice.
In more short term goals, I'd like to work out a bit and lose some weight. I'd also like to actually finish something I start(a multi-chapter fanfic, an orginal story, WonderRPG, etc.), because I know if I finish one thing, I'll be able to finish others easier.
I also like helping friends of mine out with stuff, so I'd like to be helpful to a lot of people in the future. Especially you all. :D
ps read Kris's comic

lauscho - September 16, 2007 07:58 PM (GMT)
Long term: Have a career in music. I don't even care what aspect of it anymore. I could go with being a session musician, a solo artist, a band leader, a band sideman, a producer, an engineer. Even a high school music teacher. Even just giving private guitar lessons while releasing albums independently like my mentor, Kevin Closs. I know I want to do something with music for the rest of my life, and as hard as it's going to be to attain that, I'll give up anything I can to do it.
Short term: Get another job and save up to finally move out, and get my life on track. Get my driver's license, so I can go drive around and do things on my own.
I'm also thinking of attempting another recording session within the next year. Something that sounds more professional than the music I've been working on as of late. And something a little more original than dubbing guitars over drum loops. I want to COMPOSE some songs. Push the limits of GarageBand.
In the non-musical department, I'd like to set a short-term goal of traveling to see some of my friends from here. Like Leslie or Clinton or Kristin. Preferably in a year or two.
Edge - September 16, 2007 09:40 PM (GMT)
Traveling and music, that's just about it. I want to be able to make some music by myself that I'm happy with, and be in a band too. I'm taking bass lessons right now, which is a good thing, hopefully I can begin to fathom music theory eventually.
With traveling, there's so many places I want to go, but most of all, I want to go north into the arctic/sub-arctic. I'd like to live in Alaska and Nunavut for a while, but I have no clue what I'd do there. Visiting would be just as good, though.

my goal is a train.
my real goals are basic. I want to get get some more exp in graphic design, get enough background to freelance and then take the test to be an animal control officer; be able to do a little of both. also obviously want to move out.

motorola_otaku - September 17, 2007 05:22 PM (GMT)
Short-mid-term: I just finished remodeling my room, and making it what I consider both livable and presentable for the duration. Right now, I'm saving cash to drop a new transmission and some other parts in my car. Hopefully that will go down in early November. After that, I am massugu go for Otakon '08. And since I will have not much else to do with my time, I am going to start night Japanese language classes with the Japan-America Society of Houston. I don't know if any of it will stick, but my brain sorely needs the exercise. Next year will be comprised of more money-saving and I don't know what else until A-Kon and Otakon, which I aspire to make epic on many levels not just for myself, but for all the Wonderlanders in attendance. Then there will be more money-saving through winter '08-'09, and then sometime in 2009 I am telling my job to get bent. After that, I'm driving up to Seattle to kick it with Barry for a few days (and hooking up with Keiri along the way), and after that I'm hopping a plane for Australia, hopefully with Barry in tow. I'll kick it at Tom & James' place for a few days or a week, radio-geek it up with James, deliver a much-deserved hug to their mom ( ), and have dinner with some other radio geeks from that part of the world. Then I'm hopping a plane for Japan, hopefully with Barry, Tom & co. in tow for a couple of weeks, where I hope to attend & cosplay at Comiket, drop most of that saved-up cash in Akihabara and do the Sunday freak-show, go stay at a hot springs somewhere, and ride a bullet train to Hokkaido. After that, I will fly back to Seattle and drive back to Houston, and after that I don't know, maybe lay around and not do anything for awhile.
Long term: I want to build a house, specifically a 2-story with the house portion over a spacious, air-conditioned, and well-lit 2-car garage/work bay. Career-wise, I would like to go to work for a municipal or county radio shop. I might also try for the railroad again. I've also tossed around the idea of moving up to Tennessee and trying to get on with a sheriff's department up there, since they take people without college. And although it's not something I'm actively pursuing, I want to try to find a girlfriend. It sounds corny, I know, but I feel like I'm more ready for a relationship now than I have been at any other point in my life. ^_^
Whatever other faults I may have, having dreams and setting goals is not one of them. :D

Max and me pretty much share an almost eerily similarity in goals in life. I too would like to learn a bunch of languages, but I'm not aiming for any specific time. It's something I want to do at my pace. I too want to move to Japan and teach or translate but this is only a dream. If it comes true, that's cool. If anything comes up, I am willing to part with this dream.
At this point in life, I just want to enjoy myself. The future is too far away to worry about.

I'd love to be a writer of some sort. Also, I'd love to work overseas. I'd definatley like to visit Japan and Italy, definatley more than once in my life, too. :P
At some point in my life, I'd also love to live on my own somewhere far out. That'll take a while, but my life's far from over. Out of the three places I'd love to live in the world, it would be between Kobe, Montreal, and Wildwood. The latter is probably the most easy for me. :P

Kyle - July 15, 2008 11:35 PM (GMT)
Near future:
- Redesign GMoreno.com [done]
- Take enough pictures to make necessary a Flickr Pro account. [done]
- Save enough money to go to USA this summer to work. My parents will probably help but I don't want to leave everything to them.
Update: Save enough money to pay for the plane tickets to Ireland.
- Finish my blog's design and start posting.
- Survive college.
- Finish Pimsleur's Portuguese course.
Life goals:
- Not having to work as a highschool teacher or die trying.
- Work fulltime in something that I like or in something that doesn't suck all my time, or both.
- Emigrate from Chile.
- Continue learning more languages.
Yasha Kodachi - July 16, 2008 01:16 PM (GMT)
Short-and-semi-short term:
- try harder in school; even though I can and have maintained a 95% GPA in fairly hard courses without any actual effort on my part, that doesn't mean I should keep going as I have been. I know that if I can be great without trying very hard, I can be amazing if I do, but it's so hard to put in extra effort when I don't need it to be better than most others. But I KNOW that if I don't learn to work harder and more efficiently, it will come back and hurt me in the future. I also really need to learn how to study and not procrastinate.
- be friendlier/more sociable
- lose weight and/or take more interest in my appearance
- keep my job through the rest of high school because job-hunting sucks and so I can use it as an excuse not to join more crappy school clubs
- do voulenteer work (for both the enjoyment of helping others and making myself look impressive to colleges)
- save/hoard money so I can take care of myself as much as possible (pooooor)
- spend some time and money making my house less ghetto so there's a chance it can be sold in the future, and my mother won't have to stay here because of it
- do whatever else I can to be prepare for and be impressive to colleges
Long-term:
- whooo six-to-eight years of college! Pharmacy school!
- after college and I have secured neccessities for life (job, apartment, cats, furniture), I plan to live as frugally as possible for a year or two so I can give the maximum amount of money to pay off my (approx. $100,000 worth) loans
- once that is handled, I will switch my hoarding ways to save for a house; I'd like to be in my own house by the time I'm 30, depending on where I live
- aaand I'd like to get married and have children someday
- basically, I want to live comfortably and honestly
Misc.:
- help out the family, because god knows they'll need it
- give money to charities because oh my god does Sarah McLachlan or whoever make me feel guilty for abused dogs even though I hate dogs
- become fluent in German, French, and Spanish, and maybe travel to Germany, France, and Spain
- oh, and I'll need a car someday
- I want a purebred cat, like a maine coon or some other enormous fluffy breed, and one or two cats from a shelter.
