Title: Aye, I am starting my own dwarfs! Need Help tho...

No Fake - May 2, 2003 02:40 PM (GMT)
Hello there!

I have been collecting me orcs for two years now and just now decided to start collecting the dwarfs! How should I start tho? I'd like to collect jsut an ordinary dwarf army first, and I onlu have roughly 100 euros (thats almost 100 dollars, or 60 English pounds)

Well, certainly the book, then two boxes of warriors, a lord and a cannon maybe? What are your thoughts on this? How should I go after thsi?

Thanks for your advice and time :)

Would you like a shooty army or more close combat oriented,I would get the book and decide on the others after looking at it.
I have the book if you have any urgent questions i'll try to help? B)

Try and think of some aspect that appeals to you and try and develop it in your armys theme. If you like combat go for your hammerers, ironbreakers, even the basic warrior set is more than comparable to other armys special choices. If it is shooting then go for your thunderers, move and shoot,+1 to hit short range,str4 -2as and core as well. Crossbows, better range but forgo the armour piercing and move and shoot. Cannons are good but often have to target the right unit to justify the points. If you go all shooty then try a gyrocopter to stop the enemy marching giving you more turns to shoot them. Have fun whatever you do.

Well, I'd like a normal army, balanced see. Lots of infantry, some cannons and couple bolt throwers would also be nice :D But nothing too beardy (pun intented :D) Questions? Well, why the hell would I want a Gyrocopter? What special stuff does it have? Thanks :D

the gyrocopter is often overlooked in a dwarven army because it is quite fragile. The thing you need it for is its movement. It is a flying machine with a breath weapon template. Look at it this way, if youve got something charging along the board heading for your battle line you want to give yourself some more shooting turns at them. If your gyro flies up to his battle line with its 20 inch move and if its within 8 inch of a unit it prevents his units from marching giving your units more time to shoot at him. Against large units of poorly armoured troops it is lethal, try a few demo shooting rounds with a breath weapon against gobbos for example. Skirmishers in cover, no problem, fly up to them toast em, no to hit roll, if its under the template completely then auto hit

Right, I've decided to go the old way, this means no hanfguns, cannons, etc

So, I was thinking (for starters, something 1000pts)

A Thane- for combat and acting as my general

Runesmith- One of my opponentss is Tzeentch ;)

20 Dwarf Warriors with Great Weapons, Heavy armour, shields full command- one kick ass combat unit ready to take on different units

12 Dwarf Crossbowmen with light armour and shields, a standard too incase they get stuck in combat :D
- Just becasue I looove crossbows and it always nice to shoot elves from afar :)

Bolt Thrower with Master Rune of Skewering- I heard that this is a potential daemon and chariot killer :D

15 Longbeards- Fluff reasons, and the ability to have either great weapons or good armour protection as well as immunity from psychology is awesome!

Don't know the points, but I think that that's about 1000pts!

Comments? suggestions? :)

Dont forget to add the rune of penetrating to your bolt thrower to make it st 7 for instant kill chariots. Always take 2 bolt throwers as they are quite cheap and 2 for 1 special.
Longbeards are only immune to panic and are quite a target in a 1000pt battle.
Apart from that, not bad. Dwarves are quite limited in a 1000pt battle but always take great wpns. Face it you'll be lucky to charge so you will probably be fighting second anyway so hit him hard. Refuse the flank and support your units with each other.

Personal opinion: Remove the Shields from the Warriors, I usually take the great weapon attack and the points are better spent elsewhere.

Well, the thing is that I face any different opponents and so it would be better have the option to change for hand weapons and shield combo if needed... but I'll consider it :)

dwarfs have dumb models man

LordLoverocket - May 4, 2003 04:38 PM (GMT)
I'm sure that constructive comment helped him in his army selection
Keep the weapon selection as it is, the tactical variety it offers may be what you need in the smaller battles.

No Fake - May 4, 2003 04:48 PM (GMT)
I'll do that, although it costs strawberries! :o

LordLoverocket - May 4, 2003 05:12 PM (GMT)
I'd rather take one big unit that was tactically diverse than 2 smaller ones with committed battlefield roles. Its not too expensive, only 40 pts for those great wpns. Where is your thane going, my guess is in your long beards for the 4x4 formation or is it somewhere else?
