After a look at the "Speed Freaks" Ork army list of Warhammer 40K, I've been thinking about the possibilities of an all-cavalry O&G army in Fantasy. I wouldn't build such an army (I don't have the time nor the money nor the interest), but the idea itself is worth considering. Yet I have never seen, up to now, a list like that.
Most O&G players tend to concentrate on big blocks of infantry, using cavalry and chariots merely as support. But since Greenies are mainly an offensive army, having fast units must be quite useful. With (Savage Orc) Boar Boyz and chariots as hammers and Wolf Riders and Spider Riders as flankers, plus perhaps a few Squig Hoppers or a Snotling Pump Wagon for a little more flavor, it must be easy to have a Waaaagh! that is at the same time fast, hard-hitting, tough and still relatively numerous.
It could also be interesting fluff-wise: some Greenskin tribes have been known to be nomadic, and they might want some speed to travel quickly without resting.
I don't have the new army book, so unfortunately I can't create a list. I just want some feedback about my general idea. Thanks. :)
I don't know much about the greenies, but I recall the developers saying unarmoured boar boyz are comparable in cost to a grail knight.
With some of the worst protected, most expensive heavy cavalry in the game they will never be more than a support unit. Maybe when the next round of army books comes out the price won't seem so bad, but for now it won't work.
I kind of like the idea of masses upon masses of gobbo wolf riders supported by boar boyz. It would be a EXPENSIVE but interesting army
