Title: Bases!

Axeman - September 12, 2003 08:23 PM (GMT)
Would anybody be kind enough to give me some pointers on making cool bases for my models? My teacher at secondary/High School is a brillioant collector and makes his own games.

Well i put sand on the base and wipe off anyon the edge of the base, then put brown ink on it let it dry then drybrush it bleached bone , paint the edge of the base bestial brown or goblin green [green for WHFB Brown for LoTR] then add a tiny amount of static grass, looks great IMHO

Thanks!

I have quite a few ways...

1.Cover the whole top in flock and paint the edge Bestial Brown, Scorched Brown, Codex Grey or Goblin Green
2.Cover the WHOLE thing in Sand or Flock.
3.Put Sand on and then put a small pebble on(For Small Bases)

i fint the easiest way to make effective bases is to and the whole thing, then ink it black. Drybrush it a colour to suit the kind of table you play on (ghostly grey for snow, bestial brown followed by bleached bone for grass, codex grey followed by fortress for stone) then place glue on some strategic part of the base and apply a little bit of flock

I like to use milliput to form undulating mounds and troughs.
This looks best with models with large bases.
Make a mound with miliput and then put something eyecatching on top like a skull nestling amoungst flock or a pile of stones.

I paint them Goblin Green, then flock on the top, stuck with pva, wiping any that got on the sides. I'll also add tiny bits of chipped pebble occasionaly or to bigger bases, to look like rocks

Depends on what the army is, and also on your units colour sceme. Perhaps if you posted your colour sceme/army/theme I could giv you help that would work realy well for you :)

I paint my bases white with with my dark elves that are midnight blue and dark angels green. THe problem i have is i don't know how to finish them. Is there such thing as white flock?

RasputinII - February 1, 2004 09:27 AM (GMT)
Xris: You might want to have a look in hobby shops, esp[ecially ones that feature terrain for model railways. I belive there is a sort of white/snow flock thing available - but I might be mistaken. If not then I would use GW flock (not the static grass) and paint it white. Well greay and then drybrush white. Or perhaps a very fine sand might work (but not the GW one). You could add a little browney grass on the bases to make them look less.. dull (for lack of a better word).

well i put sand on the base then i paint the sand chaos black then i dry brush it silver.i wait for it to dry the i put little dollops of pva around the base and sprinkle normal flock and on top of that more pva then i put static flock on top.i hang the model upside down for a while so the flock ends up verticle and i think it looks really cool

I am currently experimenting with drywall compound over my bases. Glop some on use a small pointy object to spread it out and create all kinds of crooks and cranies. use some sort of finish to seal it on (I used Future floor wax) and then paint it. I did mine up as a mud colour then drybrushed the ridges with some white. A little static grass and a few clumps of field grass and vola ... a rocking base quite cheap to do. ^_^

yes
1) paint the base by Scorched Brown
2) stick GW stand
3) stick somewhere grass

It looks very cool

For my Witch Hunter army I will be using model coblestone roads that come in plasic sheets for my bases. They are already textured and I think it'll work for the army as a whole as they will be searching out witches in cities mostly. I plan on painting them grey so that they contrast with the browns in the army.

For my snow bases i was thinking of basing them with salt, then drybrushing on ice blue. I'm not sure what else to add to break the monotomey.

A couple of people have mentioned snow bases, and I'm doing my dwarves that way.

Woodland scenics makes a snow flock. If your hobby shop doesn't stock it, a local railroad/model shop will. The problem with this stuff is that while it looks white in the jug, it is actually slightly translucent. It tends to take the colour of whatever you put it on. So the tip of the day is, before you put it down you should paint the area to be covered with a light, light, LIGHT blue.

Personally I find it helps to put down two layers of the stuff too. Flock it, let it dry (or don't if you want irregularly shaped snow as putting down a second layer will "push" around a wet first layer) and the flock it again. For crusty looking snow, add a layer of pva glue after the flock is dry.

For my wood elves I'm using a homebrew flock consisting of fine sand, coarse sand, flock, tea from a tea bag, and instant coffee grounds. It took a bit of tinkering to get it to a consistancy that I wanted (more of this, less of that) so I don't have a recipe per se, but what comes out is a great looking multi-textured, multi-hued flock that looks like fairly realistic forest debris. Lay it down and stick some static grass on and the result is pretty fantastic.

James.

Sand and graveyard earth for my skeletons, sand and goblin green for my tyranids.

I found woodland scenics in a toyshop, and plan to base my night goblins all snowy
