I started VC a while back and then decided to use the skellies as ornaments on my new board (40k)...since now all my friends are into Fantasy... (after several sessions of prodding it into their mind). I am now deciding to go back to the VC.
Im wanting to go with Van Carsteins because of their wellrounded combat and casting abilities...
Im just not knowing where to start on my army. If anyone could help with t his it would be great.
 :ph43r:
Well, welcome to the legions of the walking dead! As with any army, the best place to start is with the army book. Once you have that, you can see exactly what units you'd like to include in your army.
But lets assume that you already have this invaluable tome, and instead have a look at the troops I think you should get! B)
Best place to start is with a healthy mix of skeletons and zombies. Although zombies are worse fighters than skeletons, they are cheaper points-wise, and I think the models are much better as well. So a couple of boxes of those would be a good starting point.
You'll need a mage to lead your army. At anything less than 2000pts, that will have to be a Necromancer if you are going with any bloodline other than Necrarch. So buy one of those, upgrade him to level 2, give him the Cloak of Mist and Shadows and stick him with one of your blocks of foot troops!
The Von Carstein blister will also be invaluable, giving you the option of fielding two vampire thralls at lower points games, or a Vampire count and a vampire thrall in larger points games. Either one can be mounted on a skeletal steed. Some wights would be ideal to accompany your Vampire, who is a formidable fighter, so a unit of Black Knights or Grave Guard would also be in order.
Finally, consider your "auxillary" troops. Personally, this would consist of a couple of small units Dire Wolves, and a couple of Ghoul packs, as well as two Banshee's (in 2000pts).
My favoured tactic is the counter-charge, where my big blocks of zombies take the enemies charge, and my other units like Dire Wolves and Ghouls hit the flanks of the enemy units. This is not the only tactic by a long way, but I have found it to be the most effective for my style of play.
So, you can choose to go with some or all of my advice, or you can ignore it completely. Either way, good luck with your army, let us know how it progresses and feel free to ask any questions which I will do my utmost to answer!
Cheers.
