What is a good unit size for.....

Swordsmen?

Spearmen?

Halberdiers?

Knights?

Flagellants?

What is a good detachment unit...

Spearmen?

Halberdiers?

Free companies?

Archers?

Crossbowmen?

Which is better.....

Warrior Priest?

Wizard?

state infantry: 20 minimum, preferably 24-35, that way they'll still outnumber most opponents even if they take some casualties

knights: 8+, unless they're your main damages doers, then I'd suggest 12+

As for detachments, free company are greeat (2 attacks each, nothing beats that) and archers, though only if they're intended to be sent forward as decoy for fanatics etc.
Other then that, halberdiers are nice too because of S 4, but swordsmen and spearmen are better as parent unit IMO.

I personally prefer the wizard as he's more all round, but against chaos, undead, or skaven, I might be tempted to put a warrior priest in a knight unit B)

Hope that helped out, and good luck with the empire!

These are the sizes I use and are relatively effective.

Swordsmen? 25
Spearmen? 20
Halberdiers? Detachments
Knights? 14!
Flagellants? Don't use 'em, go at least 20

What is a good detachment unit...

Halberdiers? Would be best as detachment as +1S comes in handy when counter charging
Free companies? 2A aren't bad
Archers? Only for spearmen
Crossbowmen? same as above

Which is better.....

Warrior Priest?
Wizard?

I have only used a Wizard so I can't help

For detachments i figure having halberdiers and handgunners should work

or not?

I'd say that those are your safest bets, though some may disagree. Halberdiers have the extra S and handgunners are good for standing and shooting.

I'd definitley say handgunners for shooting detachments, but the Empire players I know swear by free company as combat detachments. The sheer number of attacks they can get on a flank charge often inflicts more casualties than the higher strength halberdiers.

I rarely use shooty detachments for the stand and shoot option, because they're not worth it IMO . Those 5 shots from a handgun won't make a difference , and you can't both shoot and flank charge...
