So then, I've finally decided to play Brets. I've gone from Woodies, to High Elves, to Chaos Warriors, Empire, Beastmen, and now, after years of heavy sighs and debate, Brets. Of course I've been out of the loop and 6th ed is now upon me. So with that in mind, I'm looking for some advice tactically. I think I've put together a sound list but who is to say. The commander may seem a touch twinkish though and for that I apologize but my wife insisted I use the hippogryph model an who am I to argue with wedded bliss? :b
Bret Lord on hippogryph, Lance of Artois, Virtue of Confidence, Grail Vow, Grail shield, Gauntlet of the Duel
Battle Std Bearer (paladin) barded steed, Valorous Std, Virtue of Duty
Paladin on barded steed, grail vow, virtue of discipline, wyrmlance, enchanted shield
Damsel (lvl 2) on barded steed, dispel scroll, potion sacre
Grail knights x5, std, musc, twilight banner
Trebuchet
Pegasus knights x3, std musc
KotR x8, std musc, banner of chalons
KotR x8 std musc, war banner
3x Peasant Bowmen (skirmishing) x10
Total pts is 1998. The lord and pegasus knights will take opposing flanks or same depending. The paladin will fight with the grail knights. The std bearer and damsel separately in the kotr. Who goes where depends but the stacking of war banner + std + virtue is nice so it may happen. Either way this gives me 2 hard hitters (grail and stacked kotr) a secondary knight unit backed by magic, 3 units of skirrmishing archers to get prickly or defend the trebuchet as needed. And the Lord/Pegasus knights to hit flanks as needed. Thoughts are welcome. :thumb:
3 units of pesant bowmen, NOOOOOO. The problem with the list is that firstly pesant bowmen are crap and left behind your calvalry they're a juicy targit. The trebuchet can also be dropped, as their are more essencial things needed. Bulk up the grail knights a bit more and get a unit of peggy knights, as they will be helpful all round. It would also be good to have larger units of KotR and we can't forget questing, which are great at 2K. I'm not very expirence at brets, but do know that you must comit all your units at once and try to hit on the soft ones first so your opponent is left stranded.
The only thing I don't like about this list is the Hippogryph, but that's only a personal thing. I don't like having giant point sinks unless it is at a very high point value battle, where such a thing is useful.
If you dump the hippogryph, you can put him on a pegasus and take a second unit of the pegasus knights for flanking purposes if that is what you are interested in. Otherwise, consider moving him to a warhorse and get a whole new unit of Knights to go with him. It may not have the terror and flying, but it is a less obvious target and it still packs a nice punch.
But seeing as how your wife told you too use it, I guess that advice isn't exactly useful.
One other thing you might want to do is lower the damsel's level, drop one unit of bowmen and a magic item somewhere to add the extra grail knights and pump the unit up, a full unit of three ranks of Grail Knights can take anything and everything.
Trust me, if I could avoid the 400+ point behemoth I would. I'd much rather see him leading the charge from Pegasus or in a unit rather than on that monster but for now I'll take consolation in the Terror it shall cause. As for milking a few more grail knights I might try that but the one consolation I have is in the Twilight Banner being able to abuse terrain to maneuver and trying to get a unit that large through terrain would be a bit prohibitive. What I will say I've been thinking is trying to finagle another Paladin to lead that last unit of KotR for added punch. I might be able to swing it if I trim a MI or two and a unit of archers... I'll give updates on the army's rating in battle as it happens. Thanks for the feedback. :D
