Title: Thinking about starting 40k...

I was thinking about starting 40k on the side of fantasy, just as a get away. I was wondering, what, if anything, is great about 40k? I thought they used fewer models to play there games, so is it more affordable than fantasy?
I was looking over the 40k section of GW, and the Tau and Eldar caught my attention. Any recommendations on what I should play, along with tactics?

whats good about 40k...
..guns LOTS OF BIG FREAKING GUNS!
And conterary to most peoples views its not fantasy in space, it was but now its grown up a bit and became something else.
Its a lot more simple than fantasy to start with which can be a good and a bad thing. Games can be quicker but if your looking for a tactical challenge then you may find 40k limiting.
Cost wise it depends on what army you want to run with, Space marines are by far the cheepest army as very little models are required to play with them while Orks need a lot of models many of which you will have to convert yourself from the basic plastic squads.
as for what army to play it depends on your style. the TAU and Eldar are two higly mobile armys that can be extremly fragile in close combat, more the TAU than the eldar. However there high mobility can allow for rapid reactions to battlefield developments, plus they have some really big guns capable of shreading a monolith from the other side of the table.
One thing you will enconter when playing 40k is the simple player who only like to play a shoot till you drop mission, but you can change this easily by using the many missions that are in the rule book or makeing your own by variation on the ones that are in there.

kool once i get a nice force of cadians going for 40k i was gonna start fantasy, cus i like both Sci-Fi and Midevil type games/movies...i suggest Imperial Guard, a nice big army, 20 men/box, 2 codexes (old and new) and its good for ppl who like both tanks and infantry...whereas Spaxce Marines use more smaller groups of highly skilled infanry...

warhammer 40k offers loads for people who want to be a general of a small or large force diffrent varietys of race. In a way it can be quite tactical, but at the end of the day its all about kickin some ass
