Title: How to beat...
Description: tactics on beating certain armies
King Ulrik Flamebeard - June 10, 2003 05:27 PM (GMT)
Venerable Dwarf Lords a beardling is looking for help. I wish to know if the Elders have any wise advise on beating the other forces in the Warhammer world? In perticular the Empire. I humbly thank you my lords.
May your beard grow long and curly

Is there any particular facet to the Empire that you are having trouble with. The Empire is a tricky enemy to pin down with certain tactics as they have no trouble in producing hugely variable armies, all cavalry, all artillery, all infantry etc. If you are having trouble with a particular opponent who uses a certain unit combination then let us know the details and I'll only be too happy to help. If its just the empire in general then the only advice I can give is to keep in mind the victory conditions and kill more of him than he does of you. At least his army will stay dead, ruddy skeletons.

My opponent likes artillery and missile weapons, inparticular handguns and helblasters. And I know he's going to take an engineer, and two wizards. The rest I think will be foot troop with maybe a cavarly unit.
LordLoverocket - June 10, 2003 06:46 PM (GMT)
My advice is to take a cannon or two with appropriate runes to try and take out his helblaster(s) as soon as poss. The engineer he is probably going to place with his own cannon to avoid the misfires so if you can spare the points try and steam the crew and engineer to death with a gyrocopter. Other than that you may find that the stone thrower with appropriate rune is enough to spoil his day, you are not trying to destroy the machine ,although thats a bonus if it happens, but try and kill the crew. If the template hits them then on threes they are dead. Moving and shooting with your thunderers may be a good option to take against the war machines as they may be able to take out the crew or even the machine with some good rolls. If all else fails you could try a small unit of rangers equipped with throwing axes or crossbows to ry and take some of the artillery out. Hope this helps a bit

Miners might work too though if they coe on near the hellblaster unsupported...
LordLoverocket - June 11, 2003 12:34 PM (GMT)
Strangely enough this has saved me from putting it in the other thread with the idiotic mistakes in it. Miners came on, helblaster swivvled around, miners said byebye. God how much do I hate helblasters. Steam tanks I can tolerate, just, but not helblasters.
Kingphesphestus - June 11, 2003 01:21 PM (GMT)
What about the steam tank with the hellblaster on it :D

What kind of perversions do GW come up with? That must have been the playtesters week off, how could they allow something like that through the net, probably come up with the term "characterful" to describe it. Anything that is rock hard or open to abuse from power gamers is not faulty game mechanics or shoddy play testing but "characterful" especially those supercharacters where you don't need opponents permission to play them!

Thanks for the tips, Loverocket. I attempted to take out his Helblaster, took it to 1 wound then it went KA-BANG!! :D But in the first game it took out 15 or so dwarfs :( and I lost, damn cannon, mortars(2) and helblaster). But second game I won :) helblaster blew up fist turn and my thunderers, bolt thrower and cannon took them apart, and my warriors and ironbreakers mopped up the remains.
LordLoverocket - June 12, 2003 10:57 AM (GMT)
Yes, I remember the bat reps that you did. Well done for avenging your earlier defeat. The helblaster will more often than not explode anyway but it's just the potential damage it can do to your army. Theres nothing worse than losing an important regiment to one warmachine knowing that it wasn't due to any tactical faults with your own army. Who's next to fight your army then?
LordLoverocket - June 13, 2003 11:56 AM (GMT)
I'll specify if you want me to but GW make a big issue about balance in a game and then just throw these characters in that can't have been fully playtested and the n say you dont need permission to use them! pssssst Lord Kroak, turns any game of warhammer into "try and kill the fat lizard hammer" tm. Try him in a 2000 pts with a body guard of temple guard and have the rest of the army as scouting poisonous skinks and prepare to cry. Lots.
Kingphesphestus - June 13, 2003 12:52 AM (GMT)
What super characters do you mean?
LordLoverocket - June 13, 2003 11:38 AM (GMT)
The ones in the back of the army books. Sometimes they have got written next to them " you do not need to agree with your opponent about using soandso as they are balanced for normal games." One off the top of my head being Gorbad Ironclaw out of the OandG book. I'll try and find more.
Kingphesphestus - June 13, 2003 11:43 AM (GMT)
I know all the special characters in the army book dont require permission but wich do you consider over powerful?
