Title: what Is the use of a musician in tb??

i feel that musicians are meant for rallying only, what is the use of them in tb then?? isnt it a waste of points?? pls advise

Yes, as you quite rightly pointed out , that as undead dont flee and cant rally then half of the reason why you would have a musician doesnt apply as they cant get the plus 1Ld for rallying.

However musicans are still useful in your frontline hth units. Imagine the scenario where a unit of 20 skeletons manage to tie the combat with 16 great swords in hth (i've seen this happen), you outnumber but they still dont flee automatically as you havent beat them. They dont have a musican... Next round your luck ends and your skeletons are slaughtered.

Now imagine in this scenario that you had a muscian, you would win the combat by 1, thus automatically causing them to break, giving you a chance to chase down 300VP....

What i am trying to get across is that musicans can be extremely useful if you use them correctly by putting them in the right places.

I would recommend musicans for units that are your main ones in hth. For example Tomb Guard, Large units of skeletons that you expect to see hth (not archers!!!!), the 12 calvalry with the warbanner to perform fear tactics.....etc.. The muscian could be the difference between having your unit run down an expensive enemy unit, or your unit being smashed itself and engaged on all sides.

I regard musicans as the next most important things after standards when equipping my front line troops, even if you dont share my opinions..Its 5 points

5 points....

Ps. I wouldnt recommend anything for chariots except for standard, the muscian and champion are so expensive (the champion for +1 attack is 20 points)

As Plasmapuff said, the musician can be the difference between auto breaking the enemy, without it you will suffer another wound since he probably has a musician. I'd invest the points into it and drop the champ if there is one, another atk at WS 2 isn't going to do much.

Yes, it's worth it in your main infantry regiments, but more questionable in cavalry or chariot units (where it becomes a lot more than 5 points), and completely useless in small archer squads.

well, i generally always take a full command (not in the obvious exceptions) for fluff reasons

HighPriest_Lokist - March 13, 2004 01:16 AM (GMT)
i know, but since this musician +1 to combat reso only works for when both sides have equal combat reso, musicians wont work for tb as many armies have musicians in them wont it?? :o

Arioch - March 13, 2004 02:32 AM (GMT)
No, it won't. If your point is that Undead musicians should be less expensive than other races', I'd agree with you. But unfortunately, that's the way it is, fair or not. But for larger units, I still think it's worth 5 points (or 6 for Tomb Guard) just to prevent the possibility having to bang your head against the table when the other side has a musician and you don't.

I'm also not sure why Undead command makes good "fluff"; I mean, they're animated dead... in theory, banners and trumpets should be of no value whatsoever. But I like the models. :D

But its a win win situation.

If u take it and he doesnt you can autobreak him.
If you take it and soe does he and ends in a draw you dont loose a wound.

I would like to re-emphasise: its 5 points.

The champion is really stupid on chariots as for +20 points you get +1 ws3 attack. On heavyhorsemen using fear tactics (12 models) the champion is pretty important

the champion could have the sacrificial role of accepting challenges saving your king or prince from death and allowing them to do their attacks and their damage against normal troops....

HighPriest_Lokist - March 21, 2004 08:41 AM (GMT)
i c, hence musicians are useful should we tie in combat reso, and its cheap.
