Title: Against high elf...
Orestes - April 29, 2003 03:06 AM (GMT)
Does anybody have any tactics or ideas that work well against the high elves? Or of you play high elves, which units do you hate to see when facing VC?
Moonshadow - April 29, 2003 11:52 PM (GMT)
I play High Elves, but I've never played against someone with VC. One thing that you should do is target the Swordmasters of Hoeth with either magic, missiles, or CC units that have 4-5 strength. They only have a 5+ save and T3 which makes them very vulnerable. Try to kill them before they get into CC though. With WS6, S5 (S3+2 for great weapon) and I8 (They attack first despite their great weapons) they are very powerful. Also, try not to be charged by the cavalry, because their lances and WS4 make them very good. Don't worry too much about taking out their Archers. They can't do that much damage.

Not to hard... you can rock hard on cc will still be a powerfull magic user. try out to get a lot of skellies but dont bother to give them spear, they are best with hw and shield.

When I've played my High Elves cavalry army against VC, I find that Blood Dragons give me the biggest problem. To be fair, I haven't played against Strigoi or Lahmians, so I don't know how they'd do.
Against other VC armies, I do pretty well. Once I take out the Necromancers, the cavalry just starts to roll up the other troops. My advice to VC players is use big enough blocks of troops that fear and outnumber causes autobreak.
They've always been really fun battles and I win about 50% to 60% of the time.

What Blood line do you play
Orestes - April 30, 2003 03:57 PM (GMT)
I haven't settled on a bloodline yet, it's just me and my high elf friend so far (we still use proxys, just to get the game basics down). I have mainly used VC and Necrarch, although I am considering lahmia now. As far as the swordmasters, yeah, I'm definitely seeing them as a problem for me, my friend uses that Spec Char (Eltharion I think?) who allows you to have more than one unit of those puppies, plus I run into trouble when my vampires challenge him, because he can use that ability where he can only be hit on 6's.. Harumph!

Well, if he decides to be so CC orientated, I'd suggest you go for either Strigoi who, IMHO OWN combat, or their counterpart, the Blood Dragons :)

I play High Elves, and I've played against Vamp Counts only once. I found the ghouls to be quite annoying, as they skirmish and have T4 - very hard to kill with archers. They are a living unit, so the banner of Arcane Protection doesn't anihilate them. I could have used magic against them if my mage didn't misfire on the second turn (the turn he finally came in range) and forgot how to use Flames o' Pheonix.
I'll know what I'll have to do next time... :ph43r:

I think a good tactic might be to kill of his mages so you can have free reign to summon more skeletons in your own magic phase. Especially if you play necrarch who can have a lot of spells. :D

Never forget to protect the necro in 1000 pts game, it cost me a tournament once.. :(
Wawa - May 1, 2003 01:36 AM (GMT)
Do you know what kind of high elf force you are going to be fighting If they are going shote then you mite use zombies as you can pump more of them out then skeles and they can soak up the damage from the shooting. And hold up there more price unitd for you to flank charge them.
Skritt - May 1, 2003 01:53 AM (GMT)
a good trick, a lord on foot in a skellies units(for as)
Kingphesphestus - May 1, 2003 01:39 PM (GMT)
If he takes alot of shooters the strigoi summon gouls ability is good to stop it
Orestes - May 1, 2003 09:28 PM (GMT)
I know this is a really newbie question, but when you summon ghouls/bats/wolves, can I have them come in from any table edge I want? If so, can they charge that turn? (I think question 1 is yes and 2 is no, but want to make sure)

SWARM THE ELVES, thats your best chance, swordmasters are restricted to one regiment per army, same with dragon princes, they cant be everywhere at once, if you go against a magic heavy high elf army then your necro will probably be pretty useless so your best shot is with a blood dragon, those crazy blood sucking bastards, if you are ever stuck in a bad situationw ith a bunch of dragon princes, flank em with bats, its the only hope!
Skritt - May 2, 2003 01:25 AM (GMT)
 Maybe thats just me but i never take vamps summon, what good can they be?
Kingphesphestus - May 2, 2003 02:12 AM (GMT)
warmachine hunters, since you pick which side they can come from, Do you have wd 280 in the battle report there used like this B)
InvulnerableOne - May 2, 2003 09:37 AM (GMT)
Personally I don't like the summon creatures too much, but that's just me.
Skritt - May 5, 2003 01:06 AM (GMT)
exactly, i dont like them, they could land on 1 ghoul
Takeru - May 5, 2003 03:10 PM (GMT)
well, use them anyway, fury of khaine can cause only 3 hits, that doesnt mean u dont use it

When I fight High Elves I take the following points to heart...
High Elves will probably out-magic you, so take plenty of Necromancers with dispel scrolls.
Don't rely on summonation spells - make your unit BIG to start with.
High Elves have very good magic items, such as the ring of corin and the banner of arcane protection - which will harm your troops and characters severely.
Counter this by taking bloodline powers over magic items - you cannot destroy a blloodline power!
Outnumber and autobreak his small elite units - they may be good, but compared to chaos they cannot do a great deal of HtH combat. Zombies are a good choice.
He will probably pick and choose his charges, so PROTECT YOUR FLANKS! Bat swarms and spirit hosts do this well enough.
Take ghouls to screen your units from missile fire.
Use vampire powers like summon wolves and bats to harrass his bolt throwers and prevent marches. Even a lone dire wolf is more than a match for an archmage in combat! See how he runs!
One more thing - you're gonna be Von Carsteins, right?
Vampire+elf in challenge = dead elf. Even with a 3+ ward and 2+ armour save, wounding him on 2's will see a lot of those save rolls being made!
Fell bats good at attacking bolt throwers and lone wizards too.
Remember to make constant reference to the homosexuality of elves throughout the battle.

Thanks man! I will especially follow your last piece of advice.
Vriishnak the Twisted - May 17, 2003 01:25 AM (GMT)
If he uses the hit on 6's ability, target the Swormaster regiment he's in. Sure, they aren't going to break, but there's that many less to attack you. Remember, as long as you need 6's to hit him, he needs 4's to hit you, then 5's to wound, then you get your saves. No problem there, at least most of the time.
