Title: Tips on how to stay interested

Moonshadow - May 15, 2003 01:24 AM (GMT)
How do you stay interested in painting? I've been doing High Elves for about 8-9 months now, and to tell you the truth, I don't have too much painted. Here's what's done:

16 Archers (though a few of them will not be used, like the Standard Bearer and Champion)
1 Hero on an Eagle
1 Archmage on a horse
1 Mage on foot
1 Converted Hero on foot (used Archer/Spearmen pieces)
1 Repeater Bolt Thrower with 2 Crew
5 out of 6 Shadow Warriors
2 out of 8 Silver Helms and 5 out of 8 of their horses (actually Grimgor painted the horses)

Now, here's what I have to get done:

Putting together lots of Spearmen (If only I could find my damn glue! ) and painting them
Putting together a few Archers and painting them
1 Shadow Warrior
1 Shadow Warrior
6 Silver Helms and 3 of their horses
15 Swordmasters of Hoeth
12 Lothern Seaguard
Putting together and painting an Elf Prince on a horse.

See? I've got a ton to paint. Could anyone give me some tactics on how to make it not boring?

dude, I'm in the exact same situation as you, except I have 21 spearmen instead of archers

thats why lizardmen seem so appealing, all the diffferent colours without the boredome of bretonnia

The next race I'm going to do is Chaos. Do you think I should get a regiment of Chaos Warriors and do a system where I paint a few High Elves and then I can paint one Chaos Warrior? That might keep me interested. I'd just like to know from someone who's experienced.

it's best to finish one army first. Put up a prodiction line of 3-4 models, and try to be tidy. It's better to add a few neat base colours then the whole 'eavy metal painting guide gone wrong. After a few models, throw in a character or some elite guys, it works for me. Also, put on some music when you paint, it helps a lot B)

I usually do paint when I'm either watching TV or listening to music. TV is sometimes pretty distracting though.

I play Greenskins and Empire at the same time. I'll get bored of painting green, so I do half a dozen empire. Then those colors get old and boring . . . so I do a little more green. I would reccomend play HE and Chaos at once, except that you have SO much elf stuff to paint.

Yeah, so much it's annoying! I think I might get some Chaos stuff soon so I can set up some sort of system like this: Paint 1 Chaos Warrior, paint 3 High Elves. Paint 1 Chaos Warrior, paint 3 High Elves. That should work hopefully. Then again, Maelduin said that having two armies at the same time isn't always a good idea.

Will power?

Besides, I paint my guys while still on the sprue.

Then I assemble them.

one good way is start with the face then paint the rest afterwords or get some people to paint at the same time as then there is more people playing.

p.s one good advice is never paint while someone else is playing lol

It's official: I've bought a regiment of Chaos Warriors. They're all assembled. Now, I'm going to assemble everything, and then set some sort of goal. For example, I will not be able to paint a Chaos Warrior until I have 5 guys painted. With 12 Chaos Warriors, that's (12 x 5) 60 High Elf models to paint in total. That almost works out perfectly. :)

Maelduin ab Sardis - May 18, 2003 12:40 PM (GMT)
I doubt it'll work, but it's your choice. Just consider an assembly line combined with neatness, that'll make it go pretty fast.

Besides, chao warriors are a lot easier to paint, so they'll be done a lot quicker then high elves...

Anyway, good luck, and hope it works out for you. Just make sure your elven stuff doesn't stay unpainted, because I think that's what's going to happen, since the chaos stuff will be new and interesting...

Moonshadow - May 18, 2003 03:32 PM (GMT)
Yes, they do look a lot easier to paint than the High Elves. I'll make some sort of sheet to make sure I don't paint any until exactly 5 new High Elves are completely painted.

Maelduin ab Sardis - May 18, 2003 05:43 PM (GMT)
My chaos knights are painted purple and silver, looks pretty cool ;)

Seriously though: the only thing you have to paint is armour, so they're are a LOT easier to paint then high elves.

Just make sure you add some contrast. My first regiment of warriors was simpyly drybrushed in metallic, and why it looked decent, there was nothing that gave them an real identity, so make sure that doesn't happen to you.

Moonshadow - May 19, 2003 12:25 AM (GMT)
Yes, I'm planning on making them have their armor painted Mithril Silver, but parts of them will be painted with some sort of blue.

Takeru - May 19, 2003 05:49 PM (GMT)
that sounds cool, I'm repainting my highelves with a low mettalic colour scheme, its great, the armor is enchanted blue with black ink and boltgun drybrush
