Title: Battle for the Drinker of Souls
Description: Battle Report

Khrangar - May 11, 2003 10:35 PM (GMT)
Drauthnir’s High Elves vs. Khrangar’s Chaos in a Capture Scenario of 2000 points

Near the border of the Chaos Wastes, lies the Marauder tribe known as the Bjornlings, led by the mighty Lord of Khorne, Grimnos Lotharum. An obelisk of the Dark Gods, known as the Drinker of Souls, has been erected and those who worship the Gods of Chaos are gifted with terrible powers. The High Elves must capture this unholy creation and destroy it so that the power will once again be balanced. The Horde of Grimnos, known as the Blooded, have been sent to guard the monolith from attackers and to make sure that it continues to be a source of dark power which controls over the Bjornlings’ territory, while Prince Drauthnir and the warhost of Tor Thalaas has ventured out to destroy it.

Chaos Turn 1
Grimnos Lotharum observed the troops before him and then looked at the obelisk, their goal. He ordered Trackers of the North to advance and secure the obelisk so that none may take it from them. Grimnos ordered the Bjornling Huntsmen to advance as quick as possible towards the elven archers as he know that they would wreak havoc on his units if allowed to do so. Khrangar did the same with the First Blooded on the opposite side of the battlefield. The knights of Harkun, known as the Slaughterers, were ordered to secure the flank of the Huntsmen. "Now we wait." Thought Grimnos, "We wait for the elves to make a fatal error, then we strike!"

High Elf Turn 1
Drauthnir observed the Chaos army as it marched forward to take and hold the obelisk. He ordered his army to hold the position, now was not the right time to strike. Kaerdroth stood by his swordmasters, drawing power from their banner of sorcery. With this added power, he conjured the mighty Flames of the Phoenix to immolate the Chosen of Chaos, led by Khrangar the Beast himself. Four of the Chosen were unprepared for the sudden burst of magic, and were killed. Drauthnir waved the signal for the archers and war machines to fire. The archers on the right flank unleashed their volley into the Chosen, but failed to kill any. On the left flank, the archers shot down a single marauder before three more marauders were impaled by the volley of the repeater bolt thrower.

Chaos Turn 2
Grimnos had Harkun's Slaughterers hold the flank of the obelisk as he knew that a strong resisitance would come from that side. The Huntsmen continued their advance on the High Elf archers. Khrangar ordered the Warrior group, the Skull Crushers, to hold the other flank in case there was any resistance on that side while his unit moved into the cover of the trees to ambush any enemy unit that was foolish enough to come too close and then the true slaughtering would begin and Khorne would be pleased.

High Elf Turn 2
Kaerdroth ordered the spearmen, led by Commander Athravan, to move towad the obelisk. He traveled along side them, and his swordmasters along side him. Kaerdroth held his concentration on the Chosen as the flames grew stronger. Now the flames had become unbearable to another five of the chosen, and they perished. Even Khrangar suffered a horrible wound in the firestorm. Kaerdroth’s apprentice Azuriel, unleashed Khaine’s fury upon the marauders approaching the archers on the left flank. Unfortunately, none of the marauders were harmed. Now that the marauders were in short range, the archers and bolt thrower crew supported Azuriel with missiles of their own. The marauders fled, leaving nine corpses behind.

Chaos Turn 3
Khrangar, seeing a more opertune target, opted to leave the safety of the First Blooded as his thirst for blood overcame him. The same could not be said for the Huntsmen as a hail of missile fire overcame them and they fled to halt anymore casualties from occuring. Grimnos himself strode forwards on his mighty Daemonic Steed and as he reached the obelisk, he felt the dark power surge through him. He scanned the battlefield and all who met his gaze cowered. "Come face me!" he bellowed but none daredo so as they knew it would be their downfall.

High Elf Turn 3
Drauthnir watched as Lotharum stood back and let his horde swarm the obelisk. Azuriel approached Drauthnir, “You’ll have to manage without me for a while”.
Drauthnir, concerned, replied, “Why, where are you going?”
With a simple “You must trust me…” Azuriel spurred his steed toward the fleeing marauders. The Swordmasters moved up and faced Khrangar and the adjacent warriors, prepared to receive a charge if necessary. The Flames of the Phoenix had scorched the last of the Chosen, and now Kaerdroth was in position to start difusing the obelisk's energy. But first, he took the opportunity to place a curse of arrow attraction on none other but Grimnos Lotharum, lord of the Bjornlings. On the other side Azuriel placed a curse on the knights of chaos. These curses seemed futile, as only one knight was killed by the bolt thrower shots, and the single bolt shot at Lotharum failed to hit at all. It was as though the obelisk was beginning to drain their magic now.

Chaos Turn 4
It took all of the courage of the Huntsmen to rally after they fled to get away from the deadly barbs of the elven arrows that killed their fellow tribesmen. next to them, Harkun's Slaughterers were getting into position so that they could charge the Spearmen which would collapse all resistance near the obelisk. Unfortunately, they failed to see the 'Eagle Claw' Bolt Thrower on a hill in the distance. Khrangar had advanced to the steps of the obelisk after he had noticed that the Swordmasters of Hoeth were aproaching. He would be ready.

High Elf Turn 4
Seeing the threat the knights now posed to his spearmen, Drauthnir charged alongside his silver helms into the chaos knights. Kaerdroth managed to place a curse on the warriors beside Khrangar, and on the other flank was Azuriel. Azuriel could feel the obelisk siphoning his power, and he pulled out his power stone to fuel his next spell. He once more unleashed the fury of Khaine on the weakened marauders, killing a full rank of their regiment; it was enough to make them flee once more. Drauthnir and his cavalry made contact with the Knights of Chaos. Drauthnir dispatched one knight with a quick arc of his sword of hoeth, given to him by Kaerdroth. Another knight was killed by the Silver Helms. Taken by surprise by this charge, the knights were unable to kill any of the high elves, and withdrew.

Chaos Turn 5
After loosing a quarter of their warriors, the Knights of Harkun had managed to rally although the Elven Prince Drauthnir and his Silver Helmed Knights were still in persuit and the knights knew that they must stand and fight or face the wrath of the Blood God. The time had come, Khrangar and the Skull Crushers charged headlong into the Swordmasters. Khrangar himself managed to kill three of the elves, slashing at them with is bare hands and he even managed to crush the skull of one under the emmense pressure of his slavering jaws. The Skull Crushers held their own as well as they dispatched another two of the Swordmasters, which, knowing that they were overclassed, fled out of reach of Khrangar who attempted to give chase but to no avail.

High Elf Turn 5
The Swordmasters were not well prepared for the likes of “The Beast”, but they were able to rally nonetheless. Drauthnir, determined to finish the Chaos Knights, charged them again, as did the Silver Helms. Azuriel rode swiftly to get to the obelisk and help Kaerdroth deal with the chaotic energy soaked within it. Another knight was slain under Drauthnir’s blade, but they were ready this time. They deflected the blows of the Silver Helms, and their champion broke through the shield of a silver helm knight, and killed him. This time, the knights fled and scattered as Drauthnir gave chase.

Ending: Draw
Kaerdroth and Azuriel managed to draw some of the power away from the Bjornling obelisk, but Lotharum and his remaining marauders prevented its destruction. It will continue to provide the Bjornlings with the source of their power. As Drauthnir came to a halt after scattering the knights of chaos, he saw in the distance more of Lotharum's tribesmen. There were not enough Asur to fight them all off, so whether the mages were finished or not, they would have to order the withdrawal. The High Elves were in retreat now, but this conflict will continue; the Bjornlings shall have revenge...

I fixed one or two spelling mistakes and added a bit to the ending, for those who were curoius as to what I edited.

Nice report guys B)

Just a few hints for Drauthnir:
- use the ring of Corin. No comments needed I think...
- try using some disruption (eagles/reavers/shadow warriors) to draw the frenzied troops out of position, then charge their flank.
- Blade of seagold rules against Chosen with their 1+ saving throw.

Cheers and nice report :)

Drauthnir - May 12, 2003 08:59 PM (GMT)
Thanks, Maelduin.
I usually do use the blade of sea gold, but I wanted to experiment with some new items, this time around. I've never tried the ring of corin, although I already know how effective unmaking is :D . I'll have to give the ring a try next time.
As for the disruption units, I saved a snippet of your reply to a post I made in the High Elf section ("For the defense of Tiranoc"). I'm going to work towards getting one of them as my next unit.

Do you think its a good idea to post up your respective army lists so we can see what type of troop/ equipment items you choose? Good report though. I'll be adding some of my own when I get the chance to play some games as I'm still painting up my new lizzies.

Man, I wish Drauthnir, Khrangar and I had written a battle report for the last battle we had it was very interesting having my Hippogriff Lord and my Knights of the Realm (who didn't charge) against a Daemon Prince and a Chaos Lord on a Demon Steed (Surprisingly the Chaos guys lost, I mean strength 3 shouldn't even phase the Daemon Prince, but I guess that's why amshu's blinding light is so useful :) , and my Hippogriff survived with one wound even though he was slightly two-on-oned).
