Can you tell me the different hydra upgrades and their cost? The WD is long sold out, so this is my only chance. Does anyone use them? Tnx

Roal hydra. +35pts.
3+ scaly skin save
S3 no armour saves allowed breath attack.
The enemy that wounds it takes 1 s3 hit ignoring saves.
Once it gets down to W3 it suffers from stupidity.

Spellthirster hydra +10pts?
magic resistence 2
magic resistance 1 to units within 6"
-2 or 3 attacks, -1 strength
Can only be taken if a level 2+ sorceress is present in the army

Veteran hydra +15pts?
Roll a D6 consult a table and that is what the hydra is forced to do.

The veteran war hydra is crap as it is forced to take on certain role which include guarding things, and rushing headlong towards one enbemy model.

The spell thirster is crap as it can't kill anything.

The royal hydar is tempting with its acidiness and increased armour save, but I wouldn't risk having a hydra goiing stupid. at 255pts its awfully expensive to spend time doing nothing.

Basically stic with the normal one. But if you going for any go for the royal hydra as it is the nicest.

The rules are in the same Annual as the Steam Tank, so you should still be able to get your hands on them through mail order, if not your GW store.

Thanks a lot! ;)

There are only 3? They are pretty much screwed up. You pay extra points for having limtations  I undesrtand balance, but this goes too far.

The spellthirster gets weakened too much; I think it should have the same stats but with MR 1 for the beast only.

The royal hydra sounds very nice, but it costs a lot. I don't understand why it would get stupid, although it would fit in well with my stupid cold ones. Another unreliable unit... ^_^
IMO, since it is royal, I'd give it a +1 save and +1 S & T. No acid, no stupidity. Breath atk with no save is a killer! I think this acid is worth on its own, even taking the risk it gets stupid. Imagine what it can do against brets, dwarves, chaos...!

What's the veteran's options, are there some benefits?

Basically it's better to use the standard hydra I see.
Any chance this will be revised soon, for a more balanced and logical approach? It's alwyas fun to customise units.

The problem with veteran hydra is that you have to change your strategy based on which hydra you get with the roll...but it may be fun...
a defensive hydra is good it works like a detachment,an attacking one may be also useful, with the one who looks like a carnosaur you have to pay attention your troops don't advance towards its Arc of view but in hand to hand with enemy is a killing machine...

always take the royal war hydra, increased armor save, S2 breath wpn ignoring armor saves, defensive acid spray ignoring armor saves, mine hardly ever become stupid and when they do you get to use your bestmaster apprentices Ld of 8 for stupidity tests.
