Not perfect, but I think it's a pretty good army to base larger games around as well as being quite hard in small ones. It's meant to be played aggressively, though, so don't just sit around with it and expect to win.

I'm a bit reluctant just to give you a 1000 point army list, you should design them for yourself to suit your style of play.

What I will give you though are some pointers as to what you should get when starting a Dwarf army:

Lord/thane model - essential, that's all there is to it
Runesmith - you'll need that dispel capability sooner or later
Battle Standard Bearer - re-rolled break tests are a must in a defensive, infantry army

20-25 warriors with hand weapon + shield
20-25 warriors with great weapon + shield - take a unit of each and you can't go wrong

Thunderers - don't waste your time with crossbows, almost every Dwarf general I know (including me!) prefers these guys, they just have too many advantages for only 2 points more!

Bolt Throwers - easy to use, non range-guessing war machines, and you can take 2 per special choice

Stone Thrower - best way to learn range guessing in my opinion

Gyrocopter/Rangers/Miners - something to distract the enemy and make yourself a little less predictable

After that, I find Slayers and Hammerers good to protect yourself from being flanked - they can survive for a long time because of being unbreakable or stubborn (just keep Slayers away from missile fire as best you can!) + Slayers have great fluff and are something a little different to paint after all that armour!

could i trade a stone thrower for a Organ Gun?

I really like organ guns, but would probably keep the stone thrower and choose a gyrocopter as my first Rare choice, if I was just starting out

The thing that intriges me about the Dwarfs is the WAR MACHINES and i will make a War machine heavy army, with lots of thunders, organ guns and all the other stuff.Still i know the pros and cons. But if you think it needs to be changed feel free

Kroq-Gar - January 20, 2004 03:33 AM (GMT)
you can take only one organ gun every 1000pt...you want a very specific army so buy the book and go for it i think...

Night Gobbo Zorg - January 20, 2004 03:55 AM (GMT)
thanks for encouragement Kroq-Gar

The Dwarf list I started with was warmachine heavy, and while it was fun at first, it just gets really boring after a while to watch the opposing army disintegrate as they move towards you, then smash through some part of your line and have the game end up as a draw.

Putting points into a lot of warmachines takes away a lot of the advantages of being a Dwarf player, as far as I'm concerned. You can no longer guarantee that your army will hold against that charge, and the fact that you have to stay in one place to protect the machines means that it's even easier for the opponent to avoid combat with whatever good units you have.

Wanting to have warmachines is fine, but spending more than 10 or 15% or your total points on them means that your force will have to be based around defending them, which results in an army that will draw or have a minor victory in the majority of the games it plays, while if you design around combat you can hope to do better.

All of this is just my opinion, but it's also based around 4 years of playing 6th Edition Dwarfs.
