I personally favor the Ratling Gun, but the Warpfire has its uses.

Could someone specify against which kind off army/units the warpfire thrower works better(except from being good at setting fire to flammable targets)?

cheers,
BrotherPaul

i personally enjoy the ratling gun better. Just for the image if nothing else...

The two gunners lined up and the ratling gun starts to whine as it starts up, as the shooting becomes more powreful and the rats start boggling around with the gun as it fires round after round.. Suddenly there is a clink and... BOOM! There goes the gun and crew!

..as opposed to a warpfire gun just exploding...

Well, according to my recent experience with both which was the receiving end of it. The Ratling gun tore my guys to shreds whereas the Warpfire thrower did next to nothing. Could've just been the dice rolls, but those Ratlings are quite fearsome!

Rattling Guns are without a doubt more effective than Flame Throwers. This is for several reasons. The first is the reliability of the Rattling Gun. You can make sure it is never destroyed as long as you do not roll another dice as soon as you roll a 5 or 6. You can risk more dice when you do not have enough hits e.g. you have rolled a 1 and a 2 on your first two dice and you need to do 4 kills to remove a rank bonus on a charging unit. You also know if they are in range or not with their 15" range. They are very good against cavalry with their armour piercing as well. Rattling Guns also muller Chaos Warriors and Saurus, two of the hardest infantry units in the game.

Although Rattling Guns are better, Flamers do have their advantages. With careful positioning you can cover more than one unit, 3 if your lucky and that would be quite a few panic tests. The Flamethrower will also kill itself in 1 in 6 shots. But Flamers are better than rattling guns when it comes to kill horde armies (And I’m talking about 200+ models, no expensive troops at all). This is because the flame template will not only reduce lots of numbers but horde armies generally have low Ld meaning that the auto panic test will make a lot run.

Great reply, this makes alot of sense. As a VC I'd attempt to steer clear of all skaven shooting if possible, but not in my near future.

I personaly think that the ratling gun is better, even though mine yet has to live to the end of a game..

Argan - January 6, 2004 11:22 AM (GMT)
ratlings r my personal favorite, warpfire only with the stormvermin. B)

I would say Ratling guns. I never have had ANY luck with Warpfire throwers. At best, they've killed 1 or 2 things before blowing themselves up, often taking large segments of my troops with them. Really, Warpfire throwers have THE worst misfire chart of any war machine I can think of, so as someone else said, 1/6 chance of losing them per shot.

All that said, I CAN see cases when they'd be really nice, but I don't think I'd use them in a 2000 pt army over ratling guns ever.
