I dont know if anyone has heard of this before but, BZFlag is a free multiplayer multiplatform 3D tank battle game. The name stands for Battle Zone capture Flag. It runs on Irix, Linux, *BSD, Windows, Mac OS X and other platforms. It's one of the most popular games ever on Silicon Graphics machines. Its open source can be modifeid if you know C++. Its as popular as Runescape if you know what that is.

Screenshots I have played it for more then 8 months. I know some people that have been playing it for 5 or more years!! That should tell you somthing. I have even talked to people from the age of 8 to 70!! This is a really addicted game. I put out about 5 to 10 hours a day just playing this game. Once you start to play for the first time you wont ever stop. Well some kids dont like it cause when they just start to play they get made fun of and called a newbie. Not to mention they always die.
You can also make maps (Worlds) for the game to play on with all your friends (If you know how to run a server).
