Title: Which version of OSX
Description: which OSX for an old iMac

Hi, I'm switching from an e-Machine to a 233MHz/256MB 40GB/ Bondi iMac later this week. javascript:emoticon('[imac]') Which version of OSX would you recommend? If I have read correctly some versions will require G4's and up and certain hardware up to work correctly. If a proc or memory upgrade is practical for this iMac, I would like to know, too. I'm switching to a Mac- 1. To learn something new. 2. Out of frustration with the never ending patches and holes on Windozes and 3. M$'s locking owners out of their own boxes with activation and threatened hardware DRM. Thanks for the help so far Duo!

OSX will run not very good at 233 Mhz with your current setup of only 256 MB RAM.

However Apple does say that the computer is OSX capable.

Anyway.

The best version of OSX, would be the latest one. Due to the fact that OSX runs better with a later version. I wouldn't buy Jaguar, that would be a waste. Wait for panther. it is said to be around 2.2X faster than Jaguar.

I would Put more RAM in there, 512 MB (maxed), and perhaps also take the Video RAM from 2MB to 6MB. (by adding 4), which will enable millions of colors.

you can get Video RAM and SDRAM from MemoryX, which I think is the best by far. The page for your iMac is located here.

With stats of:

G3 233Mhz
512MB RAM
6MB VRAM

your iMac should run quite well under X.

Hey David! Glad to see you joined up. Guys, This is David from one of the other forums I frequent. I've been talking him through his decision to go Mac.

I'd have to agree with James, he's as good about as good an anybody else when it comes to Macs, He's got some skillz.

The UNIX stuff is still something I don't know enough about to be of much help. Since I'm gonna be trying a new OS soon I'll probably be the one asking you about them.
