Title: Will Smith and the Karate Kid?

Hedgecat - October 2, 2007 04:27 PM (GMT)
Apparently, Will Smith's looking to make a remake of the old Karate Kid movie with Jackie Chan playing as Mister Miyagi, and Will Smith's planning to have his own son play the Karate Kid in question.

I'd post the video relating to it, but you'd have to sit through a nauseating three minutes of Hollywood gossip before getting word of it.

Anyway, thoughts?

Why remake it? It was good as is. All this sounds like is someone wanting to make money off someone else's work.

As enjoyable as they were, they're old as hell and I think a remake would make it look a bit nicer.

It doesn't sound bad. It's just that remakes have a tendency to suck it hard. :/

I'll probably watch it anyway, though.

What the latter two have said, it wouldn't be that bad of an idea. At least it's no horror movie remake, like I've been seeing a lot of lately.

Plus Jackie Chan and Will Smith's son being in the movie wouldn't be a bad cast idea.

This movie is going to suck horribly if they don't use "You're The Best".

-You're the best! Around! Nothing's ever gonna keep you down.

Mister Miyagi isn't Mister Miyagi without Mister Miyagi.

If they replace that song with some rap or remix sung by Will himself I might try and shoot myself.

Still, it feels like an unecessary remake but it's still too early to start bashing it.

The rates of movie remakes being good is very low. Like Yusuke said, a good remake has to be true to the original while bringing something new...

And I think this will be bad since the plan is to have Jackie Chan play as Mister Miyagi. Miyagi's role in the movie is a mentor, who doesn't do much fighting except a few scenes (if not one). Name one Jackie Chan movie in which he doesn't fight.

If it does happen, it'll probably change the story from the Karate Kid we know and love to what this guy mentions in his stand-up...
