Title: Tip Of the Day
Description: For Producers
sinewave - July 23, 2005 04:43 AM (GMT)
Since i have some down time i thaught id post a tip for all you producers and beat makers every day. so heres the first tip.
Today lets talk about eq
From EQ Magazine interview with BT aug 2005 issue.
"if you leave here and only learn one thing, shelf everything at 120 hz but your kick drum and your bassline and your mixes are going to sound like 3000 percent better. It'll start sounding like a record, you know. what makes a record sound great is having space for everything, but especially having room for kick drum and your bass line. Pads, vocals, guitars: All that has crap in it below 150 hz. It just muddies up the mix. if a sound ever sounds bad to you in a mid-wide notch, roll 500 hz out of it. it will always sound better. if you dont have 500 hz at all in your mix, it will sound better. Its like theres a danger area between, like 330 and like 550 cycles, it just makes everything sound like wwwoooohh, like that? its a good area to look at when stuff is muddy"
thats all for today. next up is an interview with carlos bess, engineer for Wu-Tang and RZA

though I'm not a producer myself I thank you for the tip, it was an interesting read even for a non-producer

Maybe its that Im not a producer or maybe its from smokin' too much, but nothing that I just read really registered in my head, but I am gonna send this to my cousin, cause he's real deep into beat making.......

yo sinewave, thanks for the info. I got a question tho.
i been working with FL v.4.0 for a min, do you ever find this overrated tool useful for beat-making?

as of right now all im using is fl studio 5 at home. ive always been an advocate of hardware myself because its just much more fun to push real buttons and and bang on pads but if youve got a midi keyboard and fl you can put out some decent stuff. in fact most of 9th wonders stuff is made on fruityloops. its not always what youve got but how you use it. only thing i dont like is the fact that the drums are very mechanical and hard to get that nice swing going. and the sound is kinda thin and not warm like analog hardware. i can pretty much pick out a beat made on fruity loops pretty easily. 9th wonder does a good job but i can still tell. if you want to hear some examples go to my websight www.soundclick.com/jkeys all my beats on this page are free and all made with fruity and a cheap ass yamaha djx keyboard. if you have any questions about fruity let me know. i pretty much know this software inside and out.
