College isn't that far away for me and I'm still stuck. I know that I plan on making a career in journalism, but I'm conflicted about If I want to be writing for a newspaper for my whole life or if I should possibly take up Broadcast journalism instead. I crave the spotlight, but I think there's probably more stability as a newspaper journalist than otherwise. (if it's important, I think I want to be a sports journalist)

The fact that you're still in high school and you already know you want to be in journalism says alot. Don't worry about the specifics right now. You will meet alot of people in college who you can network with and they will help you to better narrow your decision.

it was a very good answer though.

I know people who are on age with me (collge junior) and seriously have no idea what they want to do with their degree or if they are even in the right major, so by having that part figured out you are already waay ahead at this point. I'd suggest you set up an appointment to shadow journalists in different areas such as newspaper and broadcast, that way you can get more insight into what a days work is like for them, and if that is what you are looking for. If your highschool is anything like mine, you will be required to do at lease on shadowing session anyways. Also, do research, look into which areas of journalism make the most money, have the most flexible schedules, have more demand, etc. and basically it all boils down to which one you would have the best time doing. Good luck.

I named this forum that way because I'm 100% certain that I would attempt to answer most of the questions, and I wasn't sure if anyone else would like to assume such huge responsibilities. But it turns out everyone's on the same page here. The purpose is to inspire all of us, and if you're talented in this area, the forum is meant for you to showcase your potential as well, just like Champ and Ill have shown us.

Now back to pun's question. I agree with everything Illpoetic said, but, here's my favorite part: "it all boils down to which one you would have the best time doing"
Wow! That says it all. In other words, find out what aspect of journalism(print, broadcast, etc) you enjoy best, and get somebody to pay you for doing it. Success does not lead to happiness, it's the other way around. If you love your career, you'll be successful in it.

wow. i'm about to go to college in august for the exact same thing. i'm going be open to both a career in print and broadcast journalism (sports of course). i'm a good writer and i definately know i could do the job of a broadcaster. i figure if guys like michael kay, mike wilbon, tony kornheiser, tony reali, etc. can do it, i can too.

you're real lucky to have it set in your mind what you want to do. i didnt really have any clue where i wanted to go with my life up until lthe end of '04. partially because i didnt think it was possible. once i realized that it was, the light bulbs went off. just go to school and soak up info. your into sports journalism. study some of the greats on both the broadcasting and writing side. try and go to a school that has sports, since that's your preferred area. maybe you can eventually be sports editor of your school paper or be the reporter for the college radio station. you'll gain experience dealing with athletes, among other things. the information you gain along the way will steer you in the right direction.

i have to piggybank on ill and riz's statements also. my dad has always told me to strive for a career doing something you love. "it's the easiest money there is." don't be afraid to dive in head first.
