The Ghosts of Hong Kong
We monks know of many stories. For people like us have experienced terrible events, and we have always prayed that all would be safe and peaceful. But it is not always peaceful. Every once in a while, something will happen. A terrible event might occur in the city or a neighborhood. And a disturbance may occur, both spiritually and physically. There are distressed spirits sometimes that still stay on earth because they feel they still have something to do.
A few decades ago in Hong Kong, there was a family of five that lived in room 239 at the top floor of an apartment building. The mother was middle aged, nearly 30, and she had a husband close to the age of 40 who was a police officer. They had 2 children, a 7 year old boy and a 4 year old, little girl. They had lived together for many years in happiness.
Then on one fateful day, the mother met another man. He was Chinese also with black hair and rough, brown eyes. He wore a turqiouse jacket with baggy, light brown jeans. He seemed like the kind of man who would be hiding a secret behind his face. So the mother decided to abandon her husband and run off with the other man. She set up to have her husband killed.
Her husband had a long day at work. Back at the apartment, the husband was quietly watching television. His wife and the man quietly entered the room and fought the husband with a dagger. Finally, the man stabbed the husband 13 times, killing him. Now that this was done, the wife preceded to leave. But her lover did not.
During the whole process of the murder, the young children were watching in horror and fright. The man knowing that no one, not even the children, should know about the murder, killed the children too. He had gone overboard and went slightly out of his mind.
The mother was outraged and wept for her children. She loved them and did not want them killed. Seeing this, the man went out of it saying, "So you didn't want the children dead? Then I'll kill you too!" And thus the wife was killed by him also. The whole family was murdered. And by the time the police discovered their death, the man had already fled the city. He was searched for many years and he became a wanted man. Yet he was not found.
Many years past. Quite suddenly, however, there were distressed reports coming from the people that lived in the apartment that sounds were being heard at the room at the top floor where the family had been murdered. They claimed they heard sounds of crying and wailing and that it was the ghosts of the family that were making the sounds. For a while it was ignored by the police, who thought it was only a ceiling fan or an air vent. So the residents living in the apartment building asked for the spiritual guidance of us monks to try and calm the spirits of the apartment.
Me and other monks went to that exact apartment to calm the spirits who haunted it. And we presumed we were successful. But we were not. Soon after, the wails and screams of the spirits came back. We came back again and again to calm them, but always the spirits would return, filling the apartment building with discomfort. We soon stopped our visits and hoped that the spirits would leave one day.
The residents soon could not stand living in the building anymore. Many of them moved out and because so many people disliked the building, it was decided that it would be torn down. And it was a few days later.
Another building was built on that ground, and it was hoped that the spirits were long gone. But as soon as it was constructed, the wails and screams of the spirits came back. The building was torn down again and was reconstructed with a smaller building. Again, they came back. It seemed the spirits could not be gotten rid of.
Finally, the last building was torn and the area turned into an empty lot. Everyone knew now that the lot was cursed with the spirits and none set foot on it's grounds. Even until today it lies barren in the middle of the suburban areas.
Many years later, the police found the man who murdered the family. They found him in the train as if he had no idea how he got there. The man himself claimed he had no idea how he ended up in the city. He knew he was a wanted man, yet he had unknowingly entered Hong Kong in plain sight.
Now people say that the man had not come back by his own free will. People now say that the spirits of the family he killed took over his body for a short period of time and brought him to the police. That is when he woke up finding himself behind bars.
I believe that too.
