Title: Tales of Symphonia
Description: Everyone's played it but me...

Marlin ßeta - June 23, 2005 09:50 AM (GMT)
Hey, guys. I have a question about Tales. Lets say I'm playing as a character that knows First Aid like Raine or Kratos. Is there any way for me to determine WHO my healing spells target? Or do I just always use the spell on my controlled character whether I like it or not?

Jaken Veina - June 23, 2005 04:08 PM (GMT)
Well, personally, I never used healing chracters in battle. If you assign First Aid or any healing attack for that matter to a B+Control Stick combo, you'll use it on yourself. If you assign it to C-up or C-down, the character will automatically use it on who needs it the most. Note that C-up and C-down are used to access moves from any character, no matter who you're controlling. The other way, if you want to actually choose who to use it on, would be to open up the Tech menu, choose the character and the move, then it'll let you choose who to use it on.

SuicuneSol - June 23, 2005 04:56 PM (GMT)
Well, of course! I'm not sure what Jaken is trying to say, but I think it's what I'm about to say.

When I played, I just clicked the use tech button (whatever it was), and it allowed me to choose who to use it on with a cursor. The same with items. Lloyd can use an Apple Gummy on his ally. Genis can also choose who to use his spells on.

I haven't played ToS all the way through because it was rented. Only until the first seal did I make it. But only until the puzzle part.

...perhaps - June 23, 2005 07:26 PM (GMT)
Come on, guys, they're apple gels, not apple gummies. As far as choosing a target for healing, two things:
A. I never controlled healing when playing alone and it worked just fine.
B. I played mulitplayer with my brothers a little, and used Kratos. If you use one of the skill button combos, there is a period during which the portrait of the current healing target is flashing. You can scroll through the people, in the logical order based off the portraits with the joystick to select a target, or so I recall.

SuicuneSol - June 23, 2005 09:50 PM (GMT)
You're right, perhaps, but not right about Apple Gummies! They're Apple Gummies! Not gels, as the game states. They look like it, but they're not.

Okay well, in Tales of Phantasia, it says they're Apple Gummies. In ToS, they turned them into Apple Gels, but they both look the same in both games.

...pointless argument. But I'd just like to say neither of us are wrong.

Marlin ßeta - June 24, 2005 09:54 AM (GMT)
Okay thanks. That's been driving me nuts. I only thought that the tech menu could be used for setting the skills of your main character and C-stick shortcuts. This should work better now. B)

...........i want to play the game....i wish i had money so i could buy that and resident evil 4
maybe if i sell my demo of the twilight princess.......
question: to any of you who has played both ToS and Star Ocean, how would you compare the two? i r curious u_u

Silver Chaos Adept - June 24, 2005 08:39 PM (GMT)
That would be an odd comparison to make. I haven't finished SOIII yet, but it's a lot more serious than ToS is. [ToS is much more humour [and corny melodrama].]

It depends what sort of story you want, I guess.

Mathias - June 24, 2005 08:45 PM (GMT)
actually, i was think more on comparing the gameplay, since the fighting sequences seem to be similar, like which one do you like better, or what are some of the main differences, maybe about the charcters
(ive beaten star ocean 3 and is/are currently playing star ocean 2)
now that i think of it, has anyone here ever played Valkyrie Profile?

I don't have a GC :( I really want to play this game, though.

Mathias - June 24, 2005 10:45 PM (GMT)
you dont have a gamecube?(GCN) that s kinda surprising.....go get a gamecube now!!!
so that means youve also never really played any other GCN games either, right?

Um lets see. I bought ToS for only $20 at Meijer. I think ToS hit the best seller list or something. I don't know.

I personally like the SO:III battle system better. It seems to me that you can deal more damage with limit breaks in SO than you can with Unison Attacks in ToS. The battle system in ToS is also much more stiff compared to SO. In SO you always attack the character closest to you. In ToS you have to specify a target. Other than that, switching characters in mid-combat in ToS is a royal pain. With SO it's just a click of L or R.

Mathias - June 24, 2005 11:43 PM (GMT)
i see, in SO i usually just stuck to a healer and protected the fighters, i thought that ToS would be better because it was multi player and you that would comprimise for any bad AI, it it more necessary to swap characters in ToS?
the other thing i liked about ToS was the 4 player battle system, i thought fighting with 4 in any rpg was better than 3

Ashes_Of_Fire - June 25, 2005 12:57 AM (GMT)
I just assighned one or two chracters to heal there team mates when they are low on health. Then on top that you should buy a tonn of healing gel thingys then use them in battle if no one is healing you. That way I never die(I do still but not as often) Well i'm still only on the first disk because i'm addicted to the computer ATM.
So what bit are you up to Marlin?

EDIT: I've seen some footage on the official TOS site of a battle and god you should see all the combos they do it's incredible. They deal around 1000 damage every few seconds.

Dark - June 25, 2005 05:15 AM (GMT)
i've yet to play SO:III. i picked up SO:The 2nd Story a long while ago. that was a good one but if you want to see all the endings you're going to have to play the game about 80+ times.

from what i've seen and played of the tales series and the Star Ocean series i'd definatly say that SOseries>Tales series.

Well, I just entered Sybak last night. I'll keep everyone updated. I'm quite upset that I've lost Sheena. I like her. But I'm sure she's coming back. Either way, don't tell me. I'm having a blast of this right now. B)

Lets keep this topic going. Don't spoil me, though.

Presea is weird. She's like Colette right now...Almost in that she has no personality. Ozette sounds interesting. I wonder what Presea's relationship to Colette is? But don't tell me! :D

I'll post the characters I like and don't here like in my "ME" topic.

My favorite character in ToS so far is Sheena. I also like Lloyd, and Colette because they're both so kind. The characters I hate so far are Kratos and Zelos. Please don't spoil anything for me, but here's my opinions: Kratos is a scumbag betrayer, and Zelos is scumbag Chosen with no sense of responsibility. As Genis put it, "what an @$$." That was perfectly my opinion as well.

Anyway, I have a question, now. When you press the Y button from just wandering around, and you go to the main menu, there are meters on everyone's profile.

T<-|-|->S

Something like that. I understand that this stands for Tech and Skill, but what does it do for the character? Is it just flavor to show what the person favors?

Ashes_Of_Fire - June 29, 2005 01:01 AM (GMT)
Whoah your way ahead of me!
I'm only up to the errr...Water seal on the second continent i'm stuck and it has these things and you use the ring on them then I do that and I don't know where to go after that. It's hard for me to figure it out, anyone know how to do it?

Marlin ßeta - June 29, 2005 09:45 AM (GMT)
You have to mess with the upper scales by filling them with water from the sorcerer's ring, then light the torches, then fill the bottom scales to unlock the left platform. At least, that's how it goes if I remember right.

Anyway, can somebody tell me what the T vs. S means? B)

Silver Chaos Adept - June 29, 2005 03:29 PM (GMT)
It stands for Tactical vs Strike. IIRC, there's some sort of gauge that shows if a character is more geared towards Tactical or Strike. *checks manual* It says here that characters who are 'Tactical' can only learn 'Tactical' skills and magic. [At least, I think that's what it says... It's not written very clearly.]
I think that 'Strike' characters are more geared towards melee attacks, but I'm not positive on this. I never did anything to it when I was playing, anyway.

Marlin ßeta - June 29, 2005 06:28 PM (GMT)
Never mind. I found the information in a GameFaqs walkthrough. You're pretty much right, Silver. B) Thanks anyway, though.

Mathias - June 29, 2005 06:52 PM (GMT)
yes thanks silver and change your avatar

(wait, i dont have anything else to say about ToS.......oh no this is spam i failed!! )#-_- :C

soooo........what golden sun character would go good in ToS and vice Versa......and maybe Fire Emblem

Ashes_Of_Fire - June 29, 2005 11:00 PM (GMT)
Ah huh... Maybe stick more to what we are up to...
Well Marlin I'm up to the boss of the water seal any tips? He appears to be difficult for me to kill same with the minions. Well I hadn't played it for a while so maybe my skills are down a bit.

You didn't use the walkthrough to do any part of the game did you? I try to avoid them unless there is no pssibility.

Marlin ßeta - June 30, 2005 09:41 AM (GMT)
When it comes to walkthroughs I'm a little strange. I like to speed-read a walkthrough up to a certain point (I usually try to get a spoiler-free walkthrough). There's a guy with the alias AIEX on GameFaqs that wrote a good one for ToS. But anyway, then I play the game until I get stuck or go past the point I stopped reading the walkthrough. I might play a dungeon over again if I missed something critical (which unforunately, happens a lot to me in ToS). I also like to use teams that a walkthrough doesn't recommend because I find it makes for a more interesting fight if the boss doesn't get slaughtered.

Anyway, for the Water Temple boss, I'm pretty sure it's weak against lightning magic. When you're fighting a boss with subordinates, always make sure to take them out before the boss. Usually you can just take your main character and wail away on a little guy while the rest of your team focuses on the other and the boss. I like fighting a boss with Moderation on everyone unless I'm using Raine, in which case I have her Support. Kratos might be a good one to tell him to focus on healing. Other than that keep magic users like Raine or Genis at a distance. I've basically used the same tactic on almost boss in the game thus far. The only boss I've ever lost to was Sylph and you're still many hours away from that optional fight.

Rozzlynn - June 30, 2005 08:04 PM (GMT)
Second time through, I ran into Sylph early by accident - I was just looking to see if there was anything there at that point. I would've lost if it'd been my first time through, but I'd had enough practice to cling on, wondering if I was even capable of winning, until I eventually did.

I just make my teams based on which characters I like, so I don't slaughter the bosses either; I got sick of Zelos' loudmouth remarks within ten minutes of having him in my team, so I've never used him much. It may not be the best strategy, but I usually leave all the characters on Free. It's just too amusing watching my little sister running out of TP faster than Lloyd does on his own.

Dark - July 1, 2005 06:03 PM (GMT)
i always kept lloyd, colette, genus, and kratos in my party. lloyd and kratos are slaughtering machines if they both focus on one enemy. after kratos is out of the picture though i used rain because she's a good healer and had some good spells. never got much into using zelos or regal, not because i didn't like them... well zelos kinda sucked, but regal was cool, just not a good person to be in my party. i guess its just all about who you like.

Silver Chaos Adept - July 1, 2005 07:52 PM (GMT)
I used Lloyd, Zelos [or Kratos], Presea and Regal, though I usually swapped out Regal or Presea for Raine while fighting bosses.

Marlin ßeta - July 2, 2005 12:05 AM (GMT)
Yeah. You can play this game with just about any mixup that you prefer. Personally, I can't stand Regal's fighting style. My typical team consists of Lloyd, Sheena, Colette, and Raine. However, I seem to be using just about everyone equally except for Regal.

Right now I just entered the Temple of Earth. I'm taking a break now to work on the Aerie. B)

EDIT:

Wow. I just found something cool and awesome! I just beat Celcius in the Temple of Ice and she is gorgeous! I’m not only talking from the standpoint that she’s pretty. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game or fantasy novel or any other artistic portrayal of an ice spirit that is as good as Celcius. I guess what really surprised me is the femininity that was applied to her. I just couldn’t imagine such a ladylike figure representing the cold. But it seems like I’m just FORCED to accept it.

I’m sorry. Did anyone else feel that way when they first set eyes on Celcius?

Chibi Linkku - July 4, 2005 02:18 PM (GMT)
I felt that she WAS pretty, but her voice could start to annoy me sometimes....(sorry,no offense)

Marlin ßeta - July 4, 2005 03:22 PM (GMT)
Oh, none taken. But I thought that sassy voice was perfectly suited to her as well. B)

Well, I've just defeated Luna and Aska.

I can't decide which of the summon spirits I like best anymore. Well, obviously, I don't like Sylph or Gnome. But Undine, Celsius, Efreet, Shadow, Aska, Luna, and Volt are all awesome.

Celsius is simply beautiful, though.

I was also really surprised to see another anime-style cut-scene at the end of my battle with Luna. I can see a lot of hidden plotlines going on in the background of this game.

Silver Chaos Adept - July 6, 2005 07:10 PM (GMT)
I think my favourite summon would probably be Shadow.

..On a side note, did you know the guy voicing Gnome is the same guy who voices Yggdrasill? (I'm still having trouble accepting this. How can they be the same person?)

SuicuneSol - July 6, 2005 08:29 PM (GMT)
How could you not like Slyph? What does she look like? Or are they a group of pixies/fairies/slyphs?

Marlin ßeta - July 7, 2005 03:26 PM (GMT)
QUOTE (SuicuneSol @ Jul 6 2005, 04:29 PM)

Yes. Sylph is three fairies. One has a sword, one has a bow, and one has a shield. And they're all annoying hues of cute colors with high-pitched voices.

As for the same guy doing the voice of Yggdrasill and Gnome, I can believe that. I can change my voice to do all kinds of awesome impressions. I'm not even very good at it. There's certainly people who are more skillful than me when it comes to that sort of thing. B)

Silver Chaos Adept - July 7, 2005 04:13 PM (GMT)
XD I still find it weird. Especially considering taht the guy doing the voices [JAT] was responsible for some of the worst bits of voice acting I've ever heard. [He did the voice of Tidus in FFX.] ["But I wanted to see it.... withYunabymyside."]

Marlin ßeta - July 8, 2005 10:28 AM (GMT)
Well, I have an update. I've just moved on to the second disc. Very interesting stuff going on. I have a feeling we're going to learn about Lloyd's past very quick here (and the back-story concerning his funky exsphere). The details of the Angelis Project still haven't been revealed and it looks like I'll eventually have to do to Derris-Kharlan to save Colette (again :P  ).

...perhaps - July 8, 2005 02:38 PM (GMT)
I don't want to disappoint you or anything, but I don't feel like they ever did explain very well what the Angelis Project was. Everything that you learned about Lloyd's past, well, we in my family guessed early on. I can't remember just when you switch discs, so I'm not sure if you know yet.

Mercury Goddess - July 8, 2005 06:03 PM (GMT)
Yeah, that Angelus things never gets explained to any satisfactory extent in my opinon. However, I'll have to disagree with Marlin on an earlier point. I adore Kratos. If you play certain scenes right, you get him back. Though you have to sacrifice someone else to do so. But I didn't mind that sacrifice so much. Kratos is hot.

His voice actor did a much better job than some of the others. His and Sheena's were probably the strongest. Followed up by Raine's and Zelos's.

Random factoid:

Kratos's VA also did the voice of Sky in Bioware's Jade Empire.

and

Sheena's VA did the voice of Bastila Shan in Bioware's Knights of the Old Republic, as well as the Female Jaden in Jedi Academy.

Marlin ßeta - July 8, 2005 06:39 PM (GMT)
I think Presea's VA did Bubbles in PowerPuff Girls. And before anyone gets funny ideas, NO, I haven't watched that show! I read about the VA in Nintendo Power.

All of the voice actors did awesome if you ask me (well at least your own party members). I haven't had a single complaint about their quality levels and in my opinion they're all equally good. Magnius's voice actor was pretty bad, though.

Anyway, I don't like Kratos because he's a traitor (but for him, that works just fine to support his character's goals). He doesn't have any loyalties and I was so into the game that I felt betrayed on a personal level when I had to fight him the first time. Colette's victimization also added such a human concept to that arc in the story as she gradually turned into an angel. Right now I'm coming around, but I still hate Kratos as a betrayer.

I'm not fond of Zelos, but I've put too much work into improving his stats to pass him over and take Kratos back onto the team.

Actually, I'm starting to like Zelos's perverted personality. It adds necessary humor. I remember his comment about the new ability for the socerer's ring in the Temple of Darkness. It went something like:

Zelos: "Oh, this new darkness ability is so cool!"
Lloyd: "But all it does is turn out lights and make things dark. That's not very exciting."
Zelos: "Are you kidding?! Darkness is the perfect time to have fun with girls. You can do all kinds of things to them and they'll never know who it is!"
Lloyd: "Hey, Sheena! Zelos just said he was about to touch your butt."
Sheena: "What was that!!! Don't even think about it!"
Zelos: "Aw, c'mon Lloyd. I haven't even done anything, yet."

:} :D

Mercury Goddess - July 8, 2005 07:46 PM (GMT)
When I first played Zelos bothered me, and then after a few hours I got kinda attached to him. Largely because I believe his perversity is a front for true turmoil and confusion that he's not really willing to admit.

Yeah, Presea did do Bubbles. And Rikku in FFX/X-2. I'm not positive, but I think Lloyd's VA is the same as Robin's VA on Teen Titans. They sound very similar, but I've never actually looked it up.

The only person who's VA I don't really like is Lloyd's sometimes. And that may have more to do with the lines being spoken than the actual delivery. :/ I'm not sure. They reminded me at times of the rather cheesy lines Anakin spewed in Episodes II and III. *cringes*

Marlin ßeta - July 14, 2005 10:44 AM (GMT)
Well, I'm up to Torent Forest. I've been trying to build up grade and collect all of the side-quest goodies, but that's proving time-consuming. I think I'll just beat the game and be done with it. B)

Then I can go back and get all of that fun stuff later.

Void - July 14, 2005 02:53 PM (GMT)
I don't remember that place, but then again, I wouldn't remember very many other places. Been a while since I played that game.
