You need a catagory choice for "the smell of fresh paint" or just other.

Back just before Christmas, we were walking through Wal-Mart and some kid had just dropped a jar of Be paint (no big loss). I stopped to help him and a worker clean up the mess. The paint grease on my fingers, combined with the smell, was almost more than I could take. It was like mentioning herion to an addict.

My "heat up" routine used to be the same as Monkeyman. I'd blast Mettalica, Rage Against the Machine, Saliva, AC/DC, etc. and get my badassed mofo mentality on, till I realized it was really detrimental to what I wanted to accomplish. I played semi aggressive as all hell, reveling in each victory and getting mad pissed at each defeat. I realized I was viewing paintball as just another form of competition, which is something we have enough of in real life. And after me and my four best friends got in a balls out arguement over the loss of our first penny ante "tourny", It struck me that I was approaching paintball all wrong. Although in a sense it is a competition, its not one I feel I have to win anymore. I've managed to shuck the mentality that if I can't be the best at something it isn't worth doing, by realizing there will always be someone better than me I've calmed down in a whole lot of areas and tried harder to not try as hard :). In short, even a staggering defeat can result in one hell of a good story if its told among good friends, but you can't do that if you make enemies out of your friends by acting like a huge jackass on the field. So now my "up pumping" comes in the form of like, an old feel-good rock song like "Black Water", a good joke and a hard laugh, getting a long hug from my girl.. (damn, forgot I don't have a girl anymore), well then getting a long hug from my best friend's girl, (yea, she's cool like that), I would say a "Pre game beer with my buds" but I'm not that irresponsible, the vibe is what I'm going for though. Basically I try to approach the field with nothing on my mind but FUN, I like to think I've outgrown the need to prove myself to myself or anyone else. A lot of the TWIBs say I act like a prematurely old fogey, but the little kids and the first timers all agree I'm more fun and not as mean.

Anyhoo, sorry to wax all touchy-feely, I'll get off my soapbox now. Just remember; Life is harsh, laugh long, hard, and often; and play for fun, not to win.

monkeyman - July 15, 2003 06:22 AM (GMT)
damn man i never play to win, if i did id be very disappointed.i have always been about fun. and no matter what anyone says black water by the doobies is a great song. and in my opinion the worst defeat makes the best story after the fact.

cancerouspaint - July 15, 2003 07:22 AM (GMT)
I love the smell of paintballs in the morning

cancerouspaint - July 15, 2003 07:25 AM (GMT)
Oh yeah, and listening to "paint it black" about 10 times in a row helps too.

juxstapo - July 15, 2003 05:46 PM (GMT)

Hmmm, I'm the only guy who put war movie. heh..

What I do is:

I watch some old school semi-corny hard ass war movie; has to have a lot of artillery, mortars, heavy MGs, trenches, and sergents yelling at their troops through the thick of the noise of enemy fire and artillery rounds going off, simotaneously chewing on the butt of an old cigar and yelling over a radio. Yea, none of them pussy action movies where all they do is shoot little pistols and SMGs. I'm talking Rambo F***ing style here. Hard ass.

That and listening to some Conflict and/or Minor Threat.

EDIT: Ok, lol, I never actually do this,, but I think it's what I dream about the night before. I usually just wake up early when everyone else in my house is asleep, smell the fresh air, put on my PB clothes, and get that nervous gittery feeling. Every single time since the day I've started. Unless I just go out to a free area and mess around with my buds.
