Title: New Improved SCP the Chatroom
Description: new chatroom for all

Amoryl - September 11, 2007 01:00 AM (GMT)
As discussed with Chem-X, it has been decided to scrap the old chatroom and start anew.

Mirc download page.

I figured an almost exact copy of the old "How-to" guide would be easiest

since there are dozens of different types of chat programs (and since I don't know how to use any of the other ones) we'll simplify this tutorial by doing it on mIRC. if you're used to a different program, then with a bit of patience you should be able to figure everything out on that one.

step one, after downloading and installing mIRC is you'll have a screen like this
user posted image
put in your fake name, and whatnot. In 10 years of using mIRC and various chatrooms, I've never had anyone use my e-mail, but I'd still reccomend not using your real one.

pushing the indicated button should bring you to this screen
user posted image
espernet should be in your list automatically, if it's not then you'll need to click the indicated ADD button, which will bring you to

this screen
user posted image
just type it in exactly as listed, there's no server password or anything like that. when done click ok to go back to the prior screen

now, to the left is the menu list, click on the "options" under connect. its the highlighted option in
user posted image
click on the "perform button

this will bring you to
user posted image
click on the button on the upper left where it says "perform on connect"
and as indicated, type in /j #SCP_the_Chatroom
you can set it to join regardless of what server you're on, but the actual chatroom will only be on espernet, you can click on "add" and scroll down to espernet, highlight that and hit ok. this will cause it to auto-join SCP_the_Chatroom only when you log onto espernet.
hit ok for everything and then click on "connect" above the "options" you just went to, and that should bring you back to the original screen. push "Connect to server" and you're all set.

anyone having troubles logging on, or with any questions about mIRC or espernet, please post here. I will be checking often and will answer any question to the best of my ability.

also keep in mind that while we don't want to be tyrannical in moderating the channel. the prior channel did show that some control was needed. so excessive profanity, insulting comments, and other forms of abusive behavior will not be tolerated. which isn't to say we can't give eachother crap and whatnot, but if anyone's behavior starts to actively disrupt the channel and drives others away, it will be dealt with. We want a fun friendly atmosphere back in our chat.

besides, we can't let those jerks at MCB continue smirking at us smugly from their own bouncing chatroom. ;)

edit: as cargo mentioned for the chatzilla extention, it should also work for espernet.

type

/attach irc://irc.esper.net
/join #SCP_the_Chatroom

I don't have chatzilla, so I can't be absolutely certain this will work. let me know if it doesn't

Anyone know how to enter IRC when using Linux?

I have a multi-messanger service that came with Unbuntu and I would like to use my Laptop to chat on the go.

Chemical X - September 18, 2007 02:50 AM (GMT)
Come on SCP lets fill this thing up.

You can use Xchat.

To see if you have it installed, go to Applications -> Internet -> Xchat GNOME IRC (Or something with Xchat in the name)

if you don't have it, you can install it using either synaptic, or if you have a newer version of Ubuntu, it's Add/Remove Applications program.

The Add/Remove Applications program can be found in Applications -> Add/Remove...

Once in Add/Remove Applications, just type Xchat in the search bar and press enter. In a moment, a couple hits should appear: Xchat IRC Client, Xchat-GNOME IRC Client.
Go with Xchat-GNOME IRC Client (I'm using it, and it looks good for the desktop).

If you don't have Add/Remove Programs, then you might have an older version of Ubuntu. You can still install Xchat using the other program (Synaptic Package Manager), but instead of flooding this post with too much information, I'll just assume you have Add/Remove Programs. If you have an older version and would like help with that, I suggest you either upgrade using that graphical update button (it's free anyways, why not?). Or just ask me to give a step by step install process of Xchat using Synaptic.

Ok, now that you have Xchat installed, lets add EsperNet and login to that new SCP chatroom.

Once you opened Xchat, go to Edit -> Preferences. Once in Preferences, click on the Networks tab. Once clicked on Networks, you should see a all the networks available to you (there are many). Click Add. Another window should pop-up, with the Network Settings tab as the default viewable tab. The name should be EsperNet, but if you think you won't remember that, type something else, like, StockClassChatServer, or etc. Then click on the Servers tab, and once there click on Add. A grey outlined box shold appear in the whitespace next to Add. Type (or copy and past) irc.esper.net/6667 in it. The 6667 may not be needed, but it is a habit for me, since I think it is the default, or needed, port for an IRC server. Anyways. Click outside of the grey outlined box to make the server address stay. Then click on close.

Now go to IRC -> Connect. Since EsperNet or whatever you named the server is relatively new, it should be at the top of the list. But it won't be there at the top of the list the next time you run Xchat. It'll be sorted alphabetically with the other servers. Anyways, highlight EsperNet, and click on connect.

Once connected, a window should pop up with a hash symbol (#) in a text box. Type
SCP_the_Chatroom in the text box, to the right of the hash symbol (no spaces). The hit connect.

You should be in.

If you want to change your nick, type /nick YOUR_NAME in the chat box.

Does anyone know how to set this up with ChatZilla in Firefox?

Does anyone know how to set this up with ChatZilla in Firefox?

Open up ChatZilla, and in the chatbox, type the following WITHOUT QUOTES:

"/server irc.esper.net"

... Then...

"/join #SCP_the_Chatroom"

... And to change your name, type the following (with appropriate name of course) ...

"/nick YOUR_NICK_NAME"

Amoryl - October 13, 2007 02:14 AM (GMT)
thanks for the info RHLinuxGuy, I've got a pretty good working knowledge of mIRC, but for the rest, i'm fairly clueless.

come on people lets liven this thing up! we're currently drawing more MCB'ers then SCP'ers and they have their OWN room!

Phantom Power - October 15, 2007 07:06 PM (GMT)
Says the channel op who has almost twice as many posts on MCB as he does here... :P

Anyway, the new SCP chat is excellent. I encourage everyone to join in.

Victor13 - October 15, 2007 10:18 PM (GMT)
Does anyone remember that one program/site that pops up a chatroom right into any website you'd like?

It worked something like "www.thechatroom'swebsite.com/www.stockclasspaintball.com" and when you clicked on it, it popped up a chat page on top of the forum that anyone could join. Without having to download anything.

Phantom Power - October 15, 2007 10:36 PM (GMT)
You can log onto the SCP chat without downloading or installing anything by using The Espernet CGI interface.

After clicking that link, you should fill in the fields like so:
user posted image

That should work from any modern browser, and doesn't even require you to have Java installed.

well maybe if we had a better chat room before :P

and thanks a lot for posting yet more easy ways into scp's chat, now there's really no excuse not to come in :D

i'll pop in tonight and see what's going on

Amoryl - January 18, 2008 12:40 AM (GMT)
hey guys, how about we start planning a night where a good number of us will be there? some of us are here most of the time but we could at least try to schedual a meeting time where we'll be here in larger numbers

any times that work, or don't work for everyone in particular? I'm thinking sat or sun night, maybe 8ish central.

post your reccomendations and we'll try to work something out.

turbo chicken - January 18, 2008 02:46 AM (GMT)
night time any day of the week is good for me ....

well yeah, us, and phantom power are the regulars for the most part. I'm talking about the others who either never come in, or very rarely.

Big Boy - January 18, 2008 04:07 AM (GMT)
Any time towards night is good for me. A meeting time sounds good though

that link doesnt even work for me..........lol

D~

Amoryl - January 18, 2008 09:43 PM (GMT)
try Espernet Java Chat Client which'll run at least in the most basic sense, like MCB's chatroom. you'll have to have java installed on your comp, but thats fairly common for most things like that.

also when you get in simply type /j SCP_The_Chatroom

you'll also want to change your name so you're not JavaGuest59034 or something similer.

Big Boy - January 20, 2008 04:10 AM (GMT)
So we gonna work out the whole "meeting" thing? I think it's a good idea.

Amoryl - January 20, 2008 04:47 AM (GMT)
I'm for it, we need some people who don't normally come in to help fill it out.

ok lets just set a time and work from there

SCP the CHATROOM Party Night!

Sundays @ 7pm Central to 9pm (or whenever)

come in, hang out, say something!

oh and big boy, when you drop by, say something and I'll actually realize you're there :P

Clearush - January 25, 2008 03:40 PM (GMT)
updated link to the non-java chat client

http://cgiirc.esper.net/publicirc/irc.cgi

Amoryl - January 27, 2008 04:46 AM (GMT)
thanks Clearush, that link works great.

now no one has an excuse, get'cher butts in there and hang out :P

Clearush - January 27, 2008 06:32 AM (GMT)
For users of Firefox and Chatzilla - once you have set up chatzilla with your username just copy and past the irc:// link below into a new tab or window and Chatzilla will open and log you into the SCP chatroom.

irc://irc.esper.net/%23SCP_the_Chatroom

this is for Firefox users that have Chatzilla installed.

crazyorigin - January 31, 2008 01:34 AM (GMT)
i cannot seem to get it to work, i am following the steps, but can only get it to connect to some GameSurge, i think thats set as a default.

turbo chicken - February 7, 2008 02:47 AM (GMT)

lol

we need more regulars.

I'm still wanting there to be an "official" meeting on wed around 7pm central.

also when you come in, if it's empty, keep it going in the background and check in now and then. almost any time I'm online, I'm in chat, but unless you actually say something in there, I prolly won't see you untill you leave.

those of us who tend to be on the most tend to be on a bit later in the evening. 8+ central.

that being said, I'll be at chem and will's game this weekend and won't be on likely at all.

Clearush - May 31, 2008 07:09 AM (GMT)
Life has gotten really busy lately so I've not been on in over a month. Isn't Thursday night chat night anyways?

Amoryl - October 21, 2008 01:50 AM (GMT)
ok, as for most of us not in the blasted wastelands of mordor, AKA texas, the season's starting to wind down...come get your paintball smack talking fix in the chatroom. it's pretty well died over the summer, but it's still on life support, so lets get this puppy running again!

Clearush - October 21, 2008 02:28 AM (GMT)
I think your confusing Texas with Utah and New Mexico...anyways west Texas is only a 1/3 of the State we have some really good hardwood and Pine forests.

Yeah MCB chat has gotten to busy recently.
