Title: SPE 2007: What did you like about it?
Description: Post Operative Discussions

ILstickfeed - April 23, 2007 01:13 PM (GMT)
The Spring Pump Event 2007 Illinois/midwest was a huge success this past weekend.
:D

I hope and pray that everyone made it home safely after the event. There was a serious crash on I-55 South that stopped traffic for miles and even closed the highway for a stretch. :( The police had to re-route traffic around the accident through an exit ramp and life-flight helicopters had to be flown in for those injured. It was all cleaned up before I passed the accident, so I didn't see any of the cars. I don't like to hear about anybody getting into an accident, but I pray that it did not involve a group of paintball players returning from SPE. Please say a prayer for those who were involved in the accident and their families. I wish there was a way to figure out that everyone from SPE had made it home safely!

As for the SPE Event 2007, it was an awesome weekend! There were 140 registered to play on Saturday and the bulk of those returned on Sunday. The weather was perfect, although the wind gusts did kick up quite a bit of dust and threatened several of the upright canopies in the staging area. Everything lightweight had to be weighted down in the staging area or risk blowing away. The hyperball field was a bit lower than the staging area and the trees in the woodsball fields cut down the wind. However, I heard the wind was giving some players problems with hitting their targets on the field, too.

Sudden Impact had some private church groups playing on Saturday and regular open play, so the paintball field itself was overflowing with nearly 300 paintball players. The parking lot was totally full by 10 am. On saturday there seemed as if there were back-to-back-to-back pump games. If you wanted to play some pump paintball and were ready to go, there always seemed to be a game headed out to one of the fields within a few minutes. Some with referees from Sudden Impact and for some games the pump players officiated themselves. As a cameraman, I was asked to count off the start for a few games on the speedball fields. Players were eager to play some paintball and eager to get in a full day of it.

Late in the afternoon, the raffle tickets were fished out of pockets or gear bags for the giveaway of products. A table full of items had been set up including pump kits and barrel bags from CCM, $100 gift cards for powder-coating from KPCS, various accessories or upgrades from Punisher's Customs, some 90 round black hoppers from somebody, and bags of the coveted homemade cookies from the sweet Brown-Eyed Girl (Jessica) which were very popular among the hungry players. After all of the items on the table were given away, a beautiful VSC Phantom with an Orange-Cream looking anodizing (beautiful!) was brought out as the grand prize. After much tension with reading the ticket, the winner was so stunned, I don't think he could react due to shock. He was using the marker on Sunday though, and shooting darts with it. There were still players on the field after 6 pm, especially the guys from Damage Incorporated and their wood and brass collection of custom markers and their "hand-to-hand combat knives" loaded with lipstick. :bandu:

Sunday sported a bunch pick up games and the pump players tournament on the hyperball field. Everybody that wanted to be a part of it turned in there name and entry fee of $1 to Spaceman and the names were drawn at random for each team. The teams were given a few minutes to formulate a strategy and the players headed out to the field. Other than a short break for lunch, the tournament was back to back games as well. I didn't see it get held up waiting for any of the teams or single players once. The action was fast and furious for most of the games, with only a few going to the full time limit. There were some awesome shots being made and some great moves up the field. Some of the bunkerings were stellar and some were... uhm less than catlike, but even a few of those were effective. I witnessed one kind offer of a barrel tag surrender and the player declined the offer "Nope!"... pause ... and then a return shot. I am pretty sure it didn't work out well for him. The tournament finished well early enough for players to get in a few more games, pack up to hit the road, or do some more visiting before the day was over.

There was one thing that was missing, but wasn't missed at this event though. That was the appearance of any bad attitudes. It was a very laid back event without any of that garbage. There was a lot of excitement on the field, but I personally didn't witness any bad attitudes or strings of foul language. Good sportsmanship was the norm and everybody seemed to be making sure that everyone else was having a good time. That reason right there is enough to make pump paintball the fastest growing segment of the sport.

Every sort of pump marker imaginable was present at the event and most of them had some sort of custom work. Many were the workhorses of the paintball industry from years gone by. Everyone seemed to visit the sponsors booths to drool over the pump marker creations that were on display. Several people did bring the money to buy new markers at the event and I know plenty of exchanges were made by players during the event or plans were made for afterwards. There are more accessories for pump paintball markers available today than their ever have been in the sport. The options are nearly unlimited. This event is proof that pump paintball is definitely here to stay for the long haul.

On both days there was plenty of visiting to for everyone. The sponsors had some booths up under canopies. Two teams from Xtreme Paintball Park made an appearance; Total Greif led by Sal Briguglio, who were hard to miss in their purple jerseys, but I know most of them were hard to hit on the field; and members of Xtreme Dogs, a woodsball team were also present and dressed in their digital camouflage. Also present were a few members of Christian Paintball Player's Association in their red white and blue jerseys.

If you plan on going to SPE 2008, the campground about 20 minutes away (Kamp Komfort) is highly recommended. I slept soundly in my tent, dreaming paintball dreams, until the birds and sunrise woke me early in the morning. :) Despite the chill evening I was very comfortable in my tent and sleeping bag. Many of the players were able to visit for a few more hours around the fire, too. The showers were typical for a campground, but the water was hot and relaxing to wash off the field grime and paint with. Next year I plan to come up on Friday night instead of Saturday so I can camp one more day and get an early start on Saturday morning.

Representatives of CCM were on hand to show off their line of pump markers and to play in the event. As a surprise, they presented Sal Briguglio with his brand new Series 6 marker with his name and Total Greif laser engraved into the body of it. Of course the marker is purple with chrome accents and Sal was very surprised that they had brought it along with them. KPCS and Punisher's Customs had their booths set up with full tables of markers, too. These sponsors traveled for many hours and spent a lot of their own money to be at this event. Please remember to send your business their way for their quality products! :)

Thanks goes to James Dunbar (Spaceman), Sudden Impact Paintball Field, and all of the sponsors and players at this event for making it truly one of the most awesome events of the year. It was great to see everyone from last year's event and to meet many new players at this year's event. A hearty thank you to Zack for allowing an impromptu "rock-paper-scissors" match for the last available SPE event t-shirt! Another thank you to the guy with Amy that gave me a jump start to get me on the road to home!

Not surprised you needed a jump start. I think you had enough electronics running off of your truck to manage a space flight.

As an SPE first timer I had a great time. I put faces to many names that I didn't have before. Played all the paintball I wanted to for a weekend, and I know I didn't play all the games I could have (not in that good a shape any more). As was expected attitudes were great.

Weather was also about the best that could be asked for. I had a slight chill Friday night, but Saturday night I felt fine. The ammenities at the campground were better than I expected. Not quite a hotel, but then again the price was right.

The wind Sunday was a bit of an issue getting home. I was getting blown all over the road, so when I encountered that traffic jam I knew it wasn't going to be good. I'm sorry to hear it was a bad as I feared it might be. I too hope it wasn't any players, and that all envolved come through it. It only added about 45 minutes to my trip, and I got to experience a couple quaint Illinois towns:)

I too will take my hat off to Spaceman for having organized a wonderfull event.

PS: Should I feel bad that my favorite part might have been rolling the team of semis who were practicing for a tourney. Chefdave, Dan, several others and myself hit the speedball fiedl at the end of Sunday. They didn't mind us having an extra 2 bodies, and we didn't mind that they were "ramping" :bang: . I think their wipping made up for being outnumbered.

JOESPUD27 - April 23, 2007 04:17 PM (GMT)
I'm so tired and sore.

I had a great time and it felt awesome to see and play against you all again.

I'll be honest though, this year it felt like something was missing.

Maybe it was because Ray, Unimoose, Angel,Brad, Pun, ect ect weren't able to attend this year. Maybe it was because the fields I loved to play no longer stand at Sudden Impact. (RIP Barrel fields and yellow Airball)

Now, with that being said, I had a blast for only getting to play Sunday. The tourney was awesome (Thanks Gumby!) and the weekend was great. (Thanks James)

Team 3- I had a blast!
Team 7- Can you say "stacked" lol Congrats

I had a great time and I can't wait to play some of you again (Fall Pump Event 07) SPE 08!

Well, Jay, you were missing Saturday. Come on, how important is the wedding of a life-long friend. Heck, statistics show they might have another one. OK, I hope not.

I was glad someone I knew was on my team for the tourney. Too bad we couldn't have picked up a few more points. I knew we would have little hope of beating team #7. They were way ahead on the points. The rest of us were only a handfull of points apart.

I did hear several veterans saying that a little something was lacking this year. Nobody said it was bad, just not quite 100%. I had no expectations (I usually try not to w/ someting new), so had a blast.

Just now got back. Feels weird being on solid ground. I'll report back later today or tomorrow on my experience of the event. Right now just need to unpack gear, clean up, and hit a power nap.

SPE WAS A BLAST! Being my 1st time away from Xtreme Paintball Park and my 1st time at SPE I had the most fun EVER. Weather was wonderful, fields were great, and it was just so much fun meeting and seeing so many pump players. Saturday there were so many people and even though there were less on Sunday, I know alot of people that showed up werent there the day before. Everything went so smooth from signing in and getting paint to airing up during the day and getting games going. I was very happy with that. I LOVE PLAYING BACK-TO-BACK GAMES! Yes it was pretty windy Sunday but it helped all of us out sometime or another lol. I CANT WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR!

Team 3: very nice playing with you guys, 1st game we got PWND but ater we figured out our best positions we did really good.

Team 7: agreed Jay........STACKED! YOU GUYS DID AWESOME! I give it up to PHANG for playing the rollie lay downs very nice and Brown Eyed Girl and whoever was always left last with her for playing some great ball.

Thanks to everyone for making SPE a great time. Im glad I got to meet some new people.

The companies that were present were very nice and awesome people.

I also hope not, it cost too much money! :P

It was cool to have a mostly STL team.

Thanks again James and Gumby!

SPE was awesome again! Saturday was awesome, but the tourney the next day was even better!

I had lots of fun on team 3.

Jay, ph4n7om (the tall guy with the sniper i think?), andrew, and i forget the two other guys names but it was lots of fun!

It was great to play in a tournament without accusations of cheating, yelling, and all that other bad stuff.

I can't wait to see all the pictures B)

putZy_X - April 23, 2007 10:39 PM (GMT)
Had a fun time. Yes Repo was missed.

The tournament seemed to run fairly well. My ride left at the break and that was all I got to do about it.

Wished there was a big game with all the pumpers, but I didn't see it happen. If it did I must have been resting after some crazy action, because I saw a lot of stellar moves.

I guess this year they meant it.:ROTFL:

This was seen out the window at the pizza hut after Saturdays game!

I saw 2 of those signs lol. One off of Veterans Drive at the BBQ place we ate at. There were 2 in the parking lot. Then off exit 90 on the way home next to Cracker Barrel there was a HUGE one! I wanted to steal them :P

Yes I was the tall guy with the sniper mitchh. Nice playing with you.

R.E.Lee - April 24, 2007 12:16 AM (GMT)
I hope to make it there next year, in the meantime we have PP4 which I'll try to make it out for, it should only be an hour or so from my new home, hope to see you there.

Meph - April 24, 2007 01:17 AM (GMT)
It was great to see everybody again. 14 hours of driving each way but worth it. Glad to have hung out with everybody from PHOG, Tinker’s Guild, a couple from MCB even :)

Saturday was picture perfect weather. Warm but not too hot, sun wasn’t too strong yet so my melon wasn’t in danger. Games went smoothly. There wasn’t a lot of unnecessary downtime between games. Paint shot straight, a little thick of a shell so bounces were expected. Wind wasn’t harsh so no Marilyn Monroe action with the kilt wearers.

Sunday $1 tourney, with potentially Millions of dollars to be won, was just as good as last year. Well organized, timely games, and also like last year we had calm periods and suddenly gale force winds. Made down range shots interesting. Some players took advantage of the wind and could get paint to pexing around bunkers.

Played with Team #1, great group of players. I didn’t help them for **** with the first couple of games. Played like garbage. With video footage to document my crappy play! Oh joy. But we found our groove, played in it, and from there on we rocked. Had one game with the flag pull but game timed out. Another game with all elim and flag hang, and our final game with a flag hang but not all of them being eliminated. That was a fun ending. We wound up taking the Bronze medal. w00t! Not bad for players who planned our strategy at the starting box as, “So… where do you wanna go?” Very well orchestrated. :D It was all good since winning really wasn’t important. Everybody had a fun time and that was the goal.

The vendors were a very friendly group. Have Blue with ASP (and representin Punisher’s Customs), Ken of K&P, Nathan with O’Dells, CCM Chick there for… ummmm…. damn I forget which company she was representing. But she wakes up every morning and pisses excellence. And she likes the baby Jesus the best. Sweet 8 pound 9 ounce can’t even say a word yet but still omnipotent baby Lord and Savior.

I hope to have video footage edited in the next day or two. Having trouble with 1 file, it’s quasi-corrupt data and doesn’t want to upload to my laptop. Though I can watch the video footage on the video recorder so it’s not gone. Just being lazy.

Too funny!! I think this event had a larger team of cameras snapping pictures of every game than any other SPE in the past.

SPE is the event of the year. I can't wait to camp next year but besides that everything was perfect.

I thank all the vendors who really make the event awesome in my mind. Ken had great stuff, the ccm booth was amazing (especially Melissa! Thanks for the kit.), and Haveblue was doing his thing with ASP. Hopefully next year Punisher can make it again and the vendors car keep growing.

I played the tournament for the first time and had an amazing experience. Was on a great team, i did what was asked of me (GET THE FLAG) and had a fun end game where i could do whatever i wanted.

I rekindled my love of phantoms, thanks Mitch!

I got an awesome older J2 in a trade. Really like this gun a lot. I need a new reg, on off, and tank but it may become my main squeeze.

The event ran smoothly, i really love paintball without all the attitudes.

Thanks also to photographers for helping me reminisce on countless memories and experiences.

I've done shout outs in other threads but once again, thanks to all my teammates on Team7! Stacked and undefeated!

See you all next year!

Finally got the clips edited down, found some music to toss in there, and am now saving the mess to the laptop's hard drive. Hopefully in a couple hours I'll have my SPE07 helmet cam vid up and viewable.
