Title: Generalling my first scenario
Description: Sept 18-19 - Reno, NV
Burphel - March 26, 2004 04:27 AM (GMT)
Ok, I've been sitting on this for a while, and I think it's about time to start recruiting....
In September, I'm going to be generalling my first scenario game. It'll be the MXS game 'Valley of Kings' at Herbies Paintball Games in Fernley, NV (about 45min from Reno) on Sept. 18-19. It's not a full-on pump event, but there's been a handful of pumpers there every game I've been to. If enough people ask for it, we might be able to get a Friday night 'pump mission,' and the field owner ahs always been open to having plain 'ol pump games Friday afternoon.
So, come on out. With or without pumps. For or against me. This game will rock. C'mon. It's Reno. Do you really need any more excuses?

I've been wanting to play a scenario for quite some time! What's the story line going to be?
Burphel - March 26, 2004 08:28 PM (GMT)
They haven't come out with the full version yet, but here's an outline. The series theme is something akin to a combination of Micheal Chrichton's Timeline, and the old EV show Sliders. There's a group of both good guys and bad guys that keep getting sent into various paralell dimensions trying to influence the outcome of conflicts to their own ends. These guys will be a part of the game.
This game in particular is supposed to have a Tomb Raider influence, and with the VoK reference, you can bet it's set in Egypt and I'm wondering if there'll be some semblance to the Mummy/Scorpion King movies. Being on a team called Evil Inc, I doubt I'm gonna be hangin' with Lara (unless I can capture her and brainwash her into being a groupie), but hopefully that means I get to dress up like King Tut or the Rock.
mike31c - March 26, 2004 08:49 PM (GMT)
hmm, I've always liked the Tomb Raider movies :D
I even wear two pistols during game-on

I've generalled a few events, and my team has always won. More to do with luck than my own skill as a leader.
First thing you'll have to know is that you'll only be able to influence your team, not lead them on every mission. Try to keep mission squads at a reasonable level, don't send everyone out on the first mission only to have a skeleton defense on hand when the next mission is handed down.
Keep in mind, a General is worth points. You're gonna have the entire other side hunting yer arse. Don't take risks, and leave the field if things look really bad before you get eliminated. Tell 'em you're out of paint or something but if your base is about to be taken don't give them the points for taking you out.
You'll have re-insertions coming in with only a tenth of what you'll need to accomplish the missions given you. The rest are taking a "break".
Sometimes holding an insertion crew back until you have more bodies will ensure that a high-priority mission can be accomplished while something of lower point value doesn't get done.
Give out the missions and let 'em go. If you can find folks who already know the field, try and get them to lead even though they're only there to shoot people and don't care about missions. They can still get the squad to the area they need to be without traipsing all over the field.
Use the props your team can retrieve. Often these are what the game score is dependent on. If you need to hold onto a prop for a reason, cache it somewhere the other team won't find it if (when) your base is overrun.
Be a good sport. Be as sympathetic as you can especially with those new to scenario. It can be tough at times, particularly with folks who expected it to be something different and will tell tell you, very loudly, that it's your fault they're not having fun.
Above all, don't take it seriously. It's a scenario GAME, and winning the game(as my team has done) is the work of the team, not just a General. Be sure to give credit where's it's due.
Good luck, and have fun!
And let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the advice. Considering the depth of it, I want to make a little clarification... When I say 'generalling my first scenario' I mean as in my first time being a general, not first time playing one and I'm going to be the general too B).
Looking at my patch jacket, I've been to 13 24hr games and a few shorter ones. 4 of the games have been at Herbies, in fact it's as close to a 'home field' as I have in scenario games. I've done a game in pretty much every specialty role, roleplayed, been a squad leader, radio operator, security nazi, and sat in for the general during naps :). I've also been on the other end and infiltrated the enemy base without a spy card. While I don't pretend to think I know everything about it, I'm definitely not going into this completely unwise in the ways of the scenario world. I also have teammates and friends to help me out.
But I can never have too many friends helping out, hence the post...

Ive been to a few scenario games now, and can only offer my observations as a non-serious rec player at these games. I just love to play, i really dont care if my team wins or not, so long as were having a good time and giving it our best..
The games ive enjoyed the most, had generals that used all their resources. not only the "scenario" teams, but the regular grunts as well. the ones whove discovered that "regular players" can be very effective with proper motivation, have also generally won . the generals who only depend upon the experienced scenario teams generally lost the games ive been at. Less experienced players can be easily discouraged if their general is seen to only "care" about their crack teams.. One of the most sucessfull campaigns ive seen actually used a scenario team as the "diversion" , while the regulars went in and took the command base and several other objectives. the general took another scario team and split them up, making them squad leaders to mix in the needed experience and leadership. the other team assumed the "pros" were after the important objectives and sent the bulk of their forces after them..it was a great plan and worked flawlessly.. and all had a great time..
If your players arent enjoying themselves, theyll be off the field longer, not work as hard, and may even feel alienated.. id recomend spending the time and effort to organise the main force, motivate them and keep them wanting to get out there and do their jobs, let em know their important too..because they are. And still use your crack teams for key missions, and let them do what their best at.. :D

Hope you enjoy it, generaling isn't as fun to me. I prefer running missions with my team mates, handing the other team their arse.
Speaking of, I need to find a lawn chair with a sholder sling so I can carry it to the oposing teams base for comfort. I'm going to Bear Claw paintball in Tn. for the D-Day game this weekend. ITS GOING TO BE GREAT!

*coughbumpcough*
Time to start making your travel plans for this one. The MXS elves still haven't announced the storyline yet, but it should be coming shortly.
It will rock.

!
Congrats on getting that position, Burphel!
I've always imagined how fun it would be to general a scenario team... nevermind that I've never actually been to a scenario.
But wow, great for you, and your team! ;) If I were not 16 and just starting to drive, I would head out there, but alas, I have school that weekend and it's a long drive.
Well God Bless and Good Luck,
Marlin. :D

Getting really close. Looks to be a pretty decent turnout for the Friday eve. pump game.
Siress - August 30, 2004 07:57 PM (GMT)
I felt bad watching you bump the thread so I decided to post :P
My field owner was informed by a game promoter that he would be the general, the field owner replied "What did I ever do to you?!"
One more thing, THAT FREAKING D-DAY GAME WAS THE BEST EVER! The artical is in the Sept. APG, its portraied great, but doesn't hold a candel to the real thing!
and no metion of the slaughters I encured on them either. Heres how it started out for Southern Comfort. Beachhead invasion, I was the second one out the door, behind my team mate, we both were shot instantly, ran around the boat and back out. I coverd the guys up front who were laying down in the open just hoping. I got the main guy on the end of his barrel several times but he didn't go out. I was pissed so I bunkerd him and another guy out of the 'pillbox' ending the beachhead invasion in 3 MINUTES!! I continued on about 100yrds into the field and was taken out by a pumper, go dude. Reinserted with 2 of my teammates, father and son duo. The dad spotted a prop right as I spotted about 40 or more Sewer rats walking towards us. I sent them back to the base with the prop and ran from the plane up to the building without them seeing me.
Ask the Sewer rats about the time they were trying to take the 2 story builiding infront of the air plane! HAHA Little ol' me in the second floor. Had to be at least 40 of them walking down the field looking way to intense. I waited for one to try and enter the building and I hung out and poped him, and shot 4 others before they could get to cover. The window was now off limits pretty much, lol. I managed to play some angles and got 2 way off to the side. I then got another coming up the stairs, one through a window on the bottom floor, and one more IN MID AIR as he was diving behind a truck! I was eliminated while trying to prevent 2 guys in the bottom floor from coming up the stairs, one from the window got my hopper. I walked out while every one of them had to sweep the building themselves just to make DAMN SURE that the threat was gone....the grin on my face escaped my proteus mask! I raced back to the base to reinsert. What a beatiful beging of a GLORYOUS game, best ever!
MPP Games did it again! Ben is the best!
Thanks to Bob and Susie for the event, and for the food!
Thanks to Ben for such devotion and caring to give us paintballers a place to convien and have fun!
Thanks to zap for putting all 505 casses on the truck in way that they had to be unloaded by hand.... :vangry: :P
Burphel - August 30, 2004 11:24 PM (GMT)
You gotta get to an MXS game, Siress. Ben's games aren't bad, but he doesn't hold a candle to the Mackz'. Been to 8 of them, never traveling less than 1000mi and have yet to be dissappointed (even at Blanding when I was heat stroked so bad I spent most of the game in the mist tent). Been to 2 MPP games, one good, one not so good.
I gotta admit, though, running out of a mock landing craft a couple times with paintballs flying does give you a new perspective on the opening act of Saving Private Ryan and a renewed respect for the guys who did it for real. Along with hanging out with my friends, it was the best part of my 'bad' game with Ben.
Siress - August 31, 2004 02:10 AM (GMT)
I haven't spoken much about MXS but I will give you the gist of it. They flew a team in from Cali, I think (viper something), and they were stomped by Southern Comfort so bad that it is said by refs we had 95% of the field, that 5% being their insertion point that was outside of their base most of the game. They were credited for winning and the press was astonishing. It was so bad that the owner of my local field who was general of the game sold the field and didn't even play until a year later. And that was his last game to date. One game after that event.
Say what you want, argue if you must, I have said enough.
I'm not saying it is, but I wouldn't be supprised if our games are due to the field, insted of the promoter. I know the bad game you went to was MOSTLY (greater than half) the fields fault.
All in all, its a game. Ben loves every player out there and treats them all with the same kind smile and respect as he does his long time friends. I have no experience with MXS other than their reputation over here, which I don't judge them on, but I don't plan to attend one of their games with my own money, :P
Burphel - August 31, 2004 04:48 AM (GMT)
Well, to each their own. I'll probably give MPP another chance. I hope you'll eventually give MXS a first chance.
BTW, is Southern Comfort in/around Florida, wear new Tigerstripes and a rebel flag? Think I might have run into your guys a few years back. At an MXS game, oddly enough - Bermuda Triangle at Ft Meyers in '01.
Burphel - September 22, 2004 03:00 AM (GMT)
FYI - My team won, 600ish-400ish. Had about 10 people for the pump game, which was a blast in spite of some hefty winds. And while it's not a pump, I played the majority of the game with a Sydarm.
mike31c - September 22, 2004 03:24 AM (GMT)
congrats -_-
But what is this? No pics? No details? Come on! Or are you going to make us wait the 6-9 months before APG prints this scenario up?
Burphel - September 22, 2004 05:20 AM (GMT)
I don't have any pics myself, but I'll post some when I get them. Details...
We were up by one mission on Saturday at dinner break in spite of me completely ignoring the third faction (they were gods and my team's supposed to be atheists). Just before dinner break, a few of the gods got together and threatened to lay waste to our base continually until we released the gods we had the ability to free. So I freed them, hoping we'd find a way to take care of them later. During the night game we pulled ahead a few more missions even though the other team put up quite a fight, including a few base overruns and their only general kill on me when I decided to run a mission to get away from our base, which was taking some heat. On Sunday morning, with most of the gods helping us out instead of the other guys, and we managed to *really* whup up.
We won final battle (controlling the central bunker in a tire field, we had 3 little guys *inside* the tractor tires), which got us a legendary sword called the 'god beater,' meaning our faction can now kill the gods, even though we didn't prevent them from reviving their powers in the game itself.
My MVT - Southwest Regulators (aka the A5 Owner's Group) - These guys had a demo that shot down a few helecopters, a medic that went through a few bandage cards, completed a slew of missions, and even brought in a tank run by two players in wheelchairs. And when the tank broke down, the guys in wheelchairs came out in their chairs and played anyway.
MVP - Jarrett (can't remember the last name, aka the Goth Medic) - This guy returned 5 full bandage cards. I don't think there was a member of my side that he didn't heal. You want to talk about how stockers can make a difference without much firepower? This guy was MVP and didn't use a gun except at night and final battle when Medic rules didn't count.
Sportsmanship - Pam (can't remember her last name either, even though she's been running with Evil for a few games. aka the Godess Athena) - She whupped our butts the first day when the other team set her free, then when I cut a deal with her via roleplay, she went out and whupped the other guy's butts. She got shot up a *lot* (all of the gods did, being invincible has it's drawbacks), but she kept going out and doing her thing.
Most Valuable Ref - Two Dogs - Just an awesome guy, and knows the MXS rules almost as well as Bobby (the MXS ultimate), who wrote them.
Young Gun - Again, I don't remember the name, and he didn't have a nickname yet to help me along. A little guy in a ghillie hat that kept running missions and running back to let me know how things went. Everything I asked him to do was like an order.

Congratulations Burph! Had I lived in a sate that ended with V instead of Y I'd have been over there and joined w/ ya. I might not have been able to make it but I am damn glad you pulled through for the Big W! Nice job man.
