Title: Dialogue, spoken or text?
Validus - March 6, 2004 08:29 AM (GMT)
So, just wondering what was going to be done in the remake as far as dialogue? Is it going to be all text? Spoken dialogue would be really awesome except there would be so much of it, and where would you find good voice actors that would work for free :( I guess to have all the speech would take a lot of disk space also, depending on the format. Mp3 wouldnt be to bad. But even so spoken dialogue seems an impossibility for this project.
What do you all think?

 I don't think it would be a good idea, the chrono series is infamos for the silent heroe bunk. That and it is a remake, though I guess you could have everyone else talk, and you just do the usual question answering.

Oh, that is true. The fact completely slipped my mind that Crono doesn't really say anything through the game. Oh well it was worth a shot.

The reason main characters do not talk in an rpg is because YOU are supposed to be that character. The idea is that you are supposed to be thinking what the main character would have said anyway. As for voices in general... yes, I do like the idea. Will it work in the project? I would say not. It just wouldn't happen; mostly because they would have to not only find voice actors, but ones that would fit the characters.
Dream of it, don't expect it.

I think its better off to not have voice acting. Just like (was it Miyamoto?) says about Link. It's better not to have a character say something so you can imagine it yourself I guess...
IMO, it'd be better to not have voice acting. Not a bad idea, but I can't imagine having anyone in the game talking...

Well, currently we are thinking along the lines of Kingdom Hearts voice acting, some characters talk in certain important parts, but alot of the time they use text, I don't think it will exactly be much of a problem finding voice talent, there are alot of goons on the internet that will happliy voice act.

Voice acting would be cool - if you could pull it off well - with good voice actors.
The problems I see...
-Hard to find really good voice actors
-Sometimes written dialogue sound bad when said out loud. o_O
-LOTS of space for voice clips. (Especially if you want to make this downloadable.)
I would be against the sometimes-talking-sometimes-text approach - it sounds awkward for the characters to talk all in text, then say something out loud every now and then.
I'd say stick with the text system for now. ;)
But someone one these forums mentioned character portraits...

 I think it could be pulled off, the only problem would be timing... If they do have them talk will they actually put the "gribbit" in Frogs talk.

For a first version, I recommend using text. If they feel the can (and want to) update the game by removing the text and adding voice, then let them do so. I definentally Don't think it is a good idea to have voice when the project is merely at it's beginning stages.

Voice would be cool, but like alez said, if was to be downloadable you would most likely need cable; the game will be large enough as it is being 3d. Although what the could do is put 2 versions out, one with voices and one without (granting that you can find good voices for ther charecters.). If people wanted both, they could always download another version that has both.
Or another idea.
Put the game out there without voices and without text. After you have the game you download a insertion file, for either the voices in the game or the text, or one for both. That way, everyone can download the game, and pick what kind of dialogue they want. Plus it would also help people (like me) on modems to get the smaller faster text file and maybe work in the voices later. Also, you may or may not want voices depending on your ram, somebody with low ram would likely want the text unless they want serious lag.
Well, theres my input.
