Title: Something I realized
Knives - March 29, 2005 07:40 AM (GMT)
So many people hate FF8. I can say that it isn't the best game (far from it) but granted, I think it's okay. That's a key word there, BTW. At least it doesn't suck as much ass as 10 did. Anyway, I was playing through the game again to understand better why I didn't like it so much, and I found a reason:
FF8 had the potential to be the best game ever made. And SE blew their golden oppurtunity.
Know why? Its plot. I was surprised playing back through it how interested I got in the story. It's a classical scenario: a love story set against a background of war. Hard to screw up something like that. Until you add in sorceresses and time compression...who knew? I just realized that (and I have a bit of a pansy-like weakness for stuff like this) the love story in FF8 really is beautiful. Here you have Squall, an uptight loner, and Rinoa, this free-spirited happy girl. At the beginning of the game Squall is insensitive, a jerk, and has a strange outlook on life. As it progresses he starts to actually feel real emotion, and it's pleasing to watch. Until you get to the stuff about time compression and Ultimecia...way to blow a great concept to hell, SE.
So shame on you, for ruining a beautiful game. Shame on you, for spoiling a great, simple love story with complex SPAM about time travel and evil sorceresses (that somehow emerge from where?) Shame on you for not knowing when to stop.
Oh, and for FFX. Can't forget about THAT travesty.

 It happens, SE obviously tried to make it qet wild and intensive near the end, never try to complicate things that don't need to be complicated I guess.

I'd definately agree with you on this one Knives, unlike most people I know I really enjoyed FF8 ........... Excepting as you said I too think that in trying to add to the story, they ended up ruining what could have been a better game ........ The first 2 discs of game were definately better though, the train scenario, the rivalry that began with Seifer, the romance, the differant characters, but then it all started to make less and sense, it got complicated........ I would have prefered a war based on human flaw rather than some power hungry sorceress ......... I mean the whole concept of one power hungry being trying to rule the cosmos is a real overplayed scenario ...........
I also thought the GF and element junctioning system was a huge pain ......... 100 whirlwinds junctioned to attack, 55 fires junctioned to defense, 45 silences juctioned to status attack, so on and so on ........... I mean bleah ....... for crying out loud I probably spent 2 hrs total game time messing around in a blue screen that's irratating not inventive ;) ...........
On another note I have'nt had the "pleasure" of playing FF10 but I really enjoyed IX despite it's being rather easy ......... Really great plot, black mages, brillant music, a main character who was'nt the classical hero............
Cheers,
VAsh

Yeah, that's also why I enjoyed IX so much. It had amazing character development and great writing. The big thing though was that the story had a genuine emotional heft to it, and you really got to caring about the characters like they were your friends.
Knives101 - March 29, 2005 10:00 PM (GMT)
 Well vash my boy there is a lot of people out there who hated FF10, my self included... but then again there is a lot of people out there who liked it. So if you are looking to buy it, I suggest renting it for awhile first. Its one of those games where you either hate or love it.

Meanwhile, I shall play my NES and SNES Final Fantasy games while remaining blissfully ignorant of the angst you fellows are going through. :P

FFVI > joo
FFVIII > joo
FFX < pewp
FFX-2 was square getting too horny and making a overly horrible j-pop charlie's angels to satisfy their sex deprived staff.
Apocalypse - March 30, 2005 05:00 AM (GMT)
FF1 + FF2 - For such early Rpgs, very good.
FF3 - Never played, but rumours say it was one of the best "old-skool" Rpgs.
FF4 + FF5 - Pretty good stuff.
FF6 + FF7 - Awesome Stuff.
FF8 - Has potential... but starting to slide downhill...
FF9 - A minor pick-up. Bringing the series back to its roots. While popular with many fans, the lack of... female attraction for the over-sexed males made many dislike it. A shame.
FF10 - Many consider this the downfall of the series...
FF10/2 - A game made by apparently... sexually deprived programmers. They could only express their needs by making a game with such... females. Not considered by most to be a "true FF game". Still enjoyed and eaten up in large amounts by sex-crazed middle-schoolers though.
FF11 - An attempt to bring FF in to the MMORPG world. A good attempt, but overpricing, and overall bugginess drove many people away from it in the end...
That is the FF series. It has gone downhill... and may not recover. :o
Knives101 - March 30, 2005 05:27 AM (GMT)
 if 12 doesn't recover Final fantasy I'm going to just pass the next FF right by.

IV: Barely played it and only have it b/c of CT, but I did watch my friend play through it. The story is really corny and has a bad hook *SPOILER*Everyone dies, then everyone comes back! WTF?*SPOILER*
V: Played about 2 hours into it. Not much meat to the story but the Job system is fun.
VI: Great game, haven't played all the way through it. Beautiful story and great artwork.
VII: My first RPG, so it'll always have a place in my heart. Materia is cool and the story was really dark. I liked it a lot.
IX: Best. Game. Ever. Stated above.
X: Probably the biggest disappointment in the history of video games. What good are amazing visuals when your story SUCKS ASS? I mean, X couldn't have been more linear had it been put on a friggin' drafting board and drawn with a t-square. Plus the strange symbolism with water and spheres...it's a terrible game. Ughhh.
X-2: Surprisingly enough, if you just kind of pretend the ridiculous amounts of sexual innuendo and the laughable story aren't there, the game is actually a blast to play. Combat is really fun, probably better than any other FF (I'm serious!) One of the few RPGs you don't play for the story.

I + II - Haven't played enough of this game (yes, I said "this game" rather than "these games")
III - Recently finished emulated version... THE most-challenging FF I've ever played (even with cheating and a walkthrough!). The monsters attacking your airship (yes, they can attack you in the sky) became pretty boring after I started cheating. The final few required (4 were optional) bosses were very tough. Note: you'll find some references and events in this game that are similar to events in FFIII and FFIV.
IV - 2nd most-challenging FF I've ever played, I realized toward the end why Square re-released a dumbed-down version called FFIV: Easy-Type (savestate hacking still didn't work, but I didn't do everything I should've...)
V - Great graphics and a decent story, IMHO. I highly recommend this.
VI - My favorite FF game. Both the ending and the way the Final Battle was fought was kinda bad/unusual, but the game itself was AWESOME!
VII, VIII - Haven't played enough of either game.
IX - Okay, but haven't beat it (still have a saved game, but lack of funding due to buying other games caused me to lose interest in the game after the disc got too scratched).
X - Replay value isn't all that great and some of the sidequests are kind of boring (gotta hate capturing monsters...). I recommend the soundtrack though.
X-2 - Haven't played it yet.
XI - Haven't played it because I don't want to pay to play a game that I might not like.
@SE: make an FFXI: Classic Edition so you can play offline!

I've played 1-6, first half of 7, and 9. I think 9 was the best of them all. After that would have to be 7, then 3.

FFI/II-(own origins for the PS1) Played both to a point, never really got in to them, but a good start in the series.
FFIII-(do not own) havnt played, but have hurd to be the best of the NES versions and most challenging.
FFIV-(Own Chronicles for the PS1)have played and beat, challenging to a point. My second favorite.
FFV-(Own anthology for the PS1)have played, almost at the end. Very challenging if you don't keep all your jobs and skills up.
FFVI-(Own anthology for the PS1) Great story, graphics, and action. My personal favorite of all the games, and has good replayability.
FFVII-(own for the PS1) havnt beatn yet, but has a good story.
FFVIII-(Own for the PS1) still playing, small challenge, great graphics, characters ok but need work, same with the story but that is still ok. (like the card game=cannt stop playing it.)
FFIX-(Own for the PS1) still playing, but great story line, good graphics, lots of stuff to do. (Love the card game, really cannt stop playing it!)
FFX-(Own for the PS2) good story, characters needed some work, replayability not good but blitz ball is a good side game.

I'll tell you where: from Chrono Trigger. Square isn't stupid--they realized how big of a success CT was, and decided to try taking storyline elements from it and combining them with its other big success, the Final Fantasy series. Reactions have been mixed, to say the least (as is evident merely from the posts in this thread).
However, since I don't really care that much for the PSOne/PS2 FF games, I'll just return to my copy of FF6, and blissful ignorance. La dee da dee doo...
WolfPack - April 3, 2005 01:37 AM (GMT)
Nooo, FF3 was better.
rpgfan3233 - April 3, 2005 06:35 AM (GMT)
FF3 was challenging, annoying, but fun at the same time (once you finally stopped being attacked by monsters while on your airship(s) ). I still prefer FF6 because of the replay value. I have no clue why it is so great, but it is great! I personally liked most of the music. It went well with the setting(s). Plus, the game was simple, yet complex. By that, I mean that it wasn't as hard to put 2 and 2 together to connect the story, unlike in many of the other FF games, yet it was still as difficult.
If I had to list every FF game I've played AND finished according to preference... Here it is:
FF6, FF5, FF4, FF3, FF10 (poor replay value...)
