Title: Should Crono have a voice?
Shiryuu - January 1, 2005 06:03 AM (GMT)
CT's a great game but I really don't like the idea of the main character being a silent hero. Like when Marle first ask for Crono's name, there's like some silence follow by Marle saying 'Crono, what a funny name!'
I really like to see Crono having his own voice.

Crono shouldn't have a voice, because he is you.

Giving Crono a voice would be a source of a lot of complaints, because he never talks in the game. Everyone has their own idea of what he's like and what he sounds like, and people will be upset if the mod team's idea of him isnt what their idea was. Regardless of how 'good' the mod team could make it, it just wont match with the countless ways people see Crono.

First off, I'd like to thank you for posting input pertaining to the project!
It is highly appreciated. ^_^
There's a specific reason a lot of game companies don't give their main characters a voice - it's because when the main character doesn't say anything, it forces the player to use their imagination, forming their own idea of the character in their minds.
(This also means that the character is never trying too hard too be cool or funny. Like many characters I've seen in games... ) <_<
Nintendo, for example, uses this idea behind a great many of their characters - such as Mario, Link, and Samus.
And as has already been stated - if we gave Crono his own voice, it would ruin the perception that so many people already have of him.

In other discussions of Chrono Trigger, I have spoken with people whose favorite character is Crono. Many of them, I'd say about 80%, say that it is because he never talks in-game, so they can form their own opinion of him and his personality. I would say that adding a voice for Crono would be a mistake.
TheBrain - January 1, 2005 11:01 PM (GMT)
He has a single line in one of the endings, so I can't imagine (don't want to :) ) what he could talk anyway.

Yes and No. All he says is Mama Mia, or Ohh Nooo, and thats basically nothing :D
Alezunde - January 2, 2005 09:34 AM (GMT)
He doesn't say anything that gives him a particular personality though. :)
Lol nice of you to point that out though - I had forgotten he actually does say a few things.
For the most part though, he's our silent protagonist.

Shiryuu - January 2, 2005 07:06 PM (GMT)
Hmm...from what I see from one point it seems that not having a voice for crono might allow us to visualise Crono's personality.
But the possibilities is not limitless considering the response that Crono interacts with, basically gives you the general idea of how Crono actually reacts if he do have a voice.
E.g. Marle: What's your name?
Crono(Imagined Voice) 1: The name is Crono
2: I'm Crono
Marle: Crono, what a funny name!
It seems that one can only imagine the tone Crono uses to reply Marle. I cannot imagine like Crono dodging the question or maybe asking what's her name first etc... as Marle's respone has already imply that Crono has told her his name.
E.g. Marle: What's your name?
Crono(Imagined Voice): What's yours?
Marle: Crono, what a funny name?
(Imagined Voice): How the hell does she know I'm crono :P
Just a thought
But ya, I guess Fans prolly wouldn't like it if Crono does have a voice....

LOL, Duranix while playing through HL1 (and soon, HL2) I really forgot I was playing as Gordon Freeman because the game was that immersive. If they would have given him a voice it would have destroyed that feeling.
The same goes for Crono. Playing through CT I really felt as if the other characters were my friends who I was going on a massive adventure with. Shiryuu, you had a point where the times in the game Crono does indeed speak, but we don't "see" it per se, of making him speak. However, it then feels out of place and strange to hear him talk so infrequently. Your ideas, however, are very well-intentioned.
Crash Man - January 4, 2005 08:40 PM (GMT)
I don't exactly have one opinion on this, since both ways have their ups and downs, here's my views...
Having a main character have their own voice and character can be a very cool thing, if done well. Take FF7 for example, Cloud talks just like any other character, he has his own personality and everything. Same can be said about Tidus in FFX. If a main character has his own character, it can make an impact on the storyline unlike if he or she did not.
This could give CTRP an interesting twist, as you could think up and give Crono a character to be portrayed. This could make an impact on the dialogue between characters, actions of characters, it could even trigger events to happen in the game. Since CTRP is a remake, I'm assuming you're not keeping everything EXACTLY the same, and you wouldn't mind changing and adding some things.
But this could also be a bad thing, as Chrono Trigger's storyline is best kept how it is, and tampering with it could cause some bad uproar. Plus, as you guys mentioned above, the whole point of Crono not speaking is so that the player uses his/her imagination and forges their own character, and since the majority of people here have already played Chrono Trigger and made their own character for Crono, it's simply impossible to create a character that mathces all of theirs.
Maybe you should keep those in mind...
Bob The GoatGod - January 4, 2005 09:37 PM (GMT)
I think it is too late to give Chrono a voice. If it was an original game there would be no problem. The only problem is that it would contradict many opinions that are already set bcuz many have played the game.
Alezunde - January 4, 2005 10:53 PM (GMT)
Gordon Freeman didn't talk - but he kicks so much bootay.
Cloud did talk... and it made me very very sad.
Master Chief also spoke, and it made me sad.
Crono didn't talk, and he kicks major bootay.
-Alezunde
P.S. Also, Cortana from Halo 2 made me want to scream and cry.
NrG - January 5, 2005 02:23 AM (GMT)
no, i like just reading it. What kind of voice would the RP team make anyway?
Shiryuu - January 5, 2005 12:06 PM (GMT)
I don't know if they are planning on voice acting but....
what I meant by voice is Crono having his own line instead of being a silent protagonist.
Bitter Milton - January 10, 2005 11:38 PM (GMT)
are the other charachters going to speak?

there is a voice talent thread somewhere around the forum. :D
i think crono should have a voice, :D
Shiryuu - January 11, 2005 05:39 AM (GMT)
I think duranix(sp?) is planning on doing the voice overs. See Voice overs 3.
As for Crono having a voice,..........ya would be cool LoL, but most probably be refrained though.
Oh, I was also thinking, if you give Crono a voice, will that actually lower the chances of getting shut down.
Hmm...just a thought
Alezunde - January 11, 2005 05:52 AM (GMT)
I don't think that giving Crono a voice would do much to recude our chances of being shut down...
Also... Duranix is not on the team - he's just a helpful fan. (or a hopeful fan... ?)
Either way - we love our fans.

Celera - January 12, 2005 06:43 AM (GMT)
Chrono not having a voice is actually one of the only things in CT that bugged me. I bond with characters based on their personalities. Now, I'm sure that it's easy for a guy to get into Chrono's shoes, but it wasn't easy for me, a girl. ^^;; I always thought it was silly for the main character not to talk, since it is a story that's technically from their point of view. Plus, you loose a lot of potential character development (Chrono and Lucca kidding around with each other, Chrono and Marle's budding relationship, Chrono's general reaction to everything else...), and thus end up with something that kind of feels flat. I mean, there are some scenes in CT that would have been much more powerful, had Chrono had a voice. Luckily, CT had a great supporting cast (unlike CC, which is what I think made that one fall really flat). CT is one of my favorite games, but it never beat FF6 for me because of Chrono's silence. When you put Locke and Chrono next to each other, I'll always favor Locke, since I know more about his personality--though I must say, Chrono kicks some serious ass.
As for how he would talk and act, well... I imagine that would be determined by the player. If you could pick what to say in a lot of situations, it could affect his personality and whatnot. But really, I'm surprised at how many people like the silent hero thing. O__O
Hee hee--this is a really long third post. ^^
Epsonite - January 12, 2005 01:29 PM (GMT)
its like she came out of a void.... BAM!!
err....no voice for the crono man...well some people would want one ...seriously what kind of voice would he have... lets say for instance.... squalls attitude in ff8....You'd get to lavos and crono would be like Ahh its big and it looks like a turtle with a deformed head...
Next voice...uhh ooh someone extremely aggresive... like when you are at the beginning of the game and you bumb into marle and when she asks you if she can go along he should be like YER COMIN WITH ME WHETER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT!!!!
ok that one sucked...
ooh a whiny 17 year old... someone in battle dies or gets hurt he always whines :P
yea voices would really be odd...but hey if ya find a great voice who nows?...
OMG!!! STRONGBADS VOICE!! XD
Celera - January 12, 2005 08:38 PM (GMT)
I don't think he'd be whiny, or overly agressive. ^^ Chrono's obviously a nice guy who doesn't have too much of a temper, since he lets Lucca poke fun at him all the time. He also must be kind of a mischief maker, since his mom keeps telling you to behave yourself. O__O Also since you can steal food and cause all that trouble at the fair, I guess. ^^;; Plus, I dunno, he looks like a nice guy. He just has really wild hair. ^^
Hee hee--yeah, I did sort of come out of nowhere. Bam! <3
Shiryuu - January 12, 2005 11:26 PM (GMT)
Most people like the silent hero because they can imagine their own reaction to the story, thus allowing them to be Crono themselves. (I don't know how they do it, but they did it. And they are proud of it :P)
Ya, the only discomfort I have for the CT is that Crono is silence. Guess, you are the second one who dislike it too huh. Welcome to the club Celera!
Celera - January 13, 2005 01:01 AM (GMT)
Heh--we are few and far between, Shiryuu. ^^
Chuckles - January 13, 2005 01:06 AM (GMT)
I never really cared lol, if I want a story, I'll read a book, if I want some fun, I'll play a game. We can't really change too much, and even though I am neutral on the subject, I do believe there are quite a few people who wouldn't like it.
Shiryuu - January 13, 2005 02:16 PM (GMT)
Honestly, does it really piss people off when Crono suddenly have a voice?
Almighty_Gir - January 13, 2005 02:25 PM (GMT)
i think its the fact that hes always been silent so the gamer can play that particular role, and giving him his own voice alienates the player from that role, leaving them with nothing to put themself into the gaming experiance.
if you notice through most of the FF series, the main characters never said much, if anything either, untill 10...which sucked major ass anyway.
in 6 everyone talked a lot cos there were no central characters. everyone was equal in a way...
i dunno, just an oppinion.
Shiryuu - January 13, 2005 03:29 PM (GMT)
7 had the best character development IMO. Every word the character says brings out the personality they are supposed to have. The story is good and the initial ending leaves lots of possibilities, not ruling out the saddest one as well.
Final Fantasy X was good, i think X-2 screwed it all. It's better to leave the ending as a cliff hanger, rather than take it off and give it a happy ending.
They doing it again with FF VII, not sure how it turns out but I'm betting it is going to be like X-2 again.
Celera - January 13, 2005 07:42 PM (GMT)
In all the Final Fantasies, the MC talked a lot. In FFIV, Cecil definitely had the most lines. in FFV, Butz talked all the time too, and really, it helped what little story that one had. FFVI's main character was either Terra, Locke, Sabin or Celes depending on the part of the game you were in, and they all talked a lot too. In FFVII, Cloud never shut up. ^^;; It really really helped his character too, since he grew and changed with the story. IX had a peppy main character (Zidane), who talked all the time as well. Only VIII had a character that didn't talk a whole lot, and that's because Squall was kinda an introvert. FFs have always kind of had the MC as a normal cast member, so that you can see their reactions to the horrible things that are happening. Imagine FFVII if Cloud hadn't talked. It's just not as powerful.
There seem to be two types of RPGs in the RPG world. Ones with a silent MC, and ones without a silent MC. Golden Sun kind of floats in the middle of these, since you can hear both main characters talk depending on which game you're playing. (GS1, Isaac is the MC, he's silent; Felix talks. GS2, Felix is the MC, he's silent; Isaac talks. It was awesome when Isaac talked, btw. I had completely pinpointed his personality wrong.) Anyway, I tend to like games with talking MCs more, since the story seems more complete. Though it's hard to 'insert myself into the game', I get to enjoy all the characters for who they are, and that's the best part. Plus like I said before, I'm a girl, and silent MCs are usually guys. LOL So that might be why I never caught onto the whole thing. When I first played CT, obviously I didn't picture myself as Chrono, however cool he is. ^^;; And it always seemed silly when the characters ask him a question (IE: What's your name?) and Chrono doensn't answer, but the other character suddenly devines (Chrono? That's a nice name.). Of course, there are lots of sillier ways to have a silent MC (Mario RPG, for example. I'm positive that Mario is actually literally supposed to be mute in that game. The little charades he plays are cute though. ^^)
I guess the silent games are your Mario RPGs, Breath of Fires, Dragon Quests, and inevitably, and unfortunately (from my point of view) the Chrono games. Also Lufia 4 for some reason (Which really ticked me off, since the first three games featured talking MCs. The fact that the MC didn't talk in 4 really hurt the story too, since he was literally central to it.) In those games we depend on the cast to fill in the blanks, while the silent MC seems kind of akward and out of the loop. I guess it's OK when you think of it in terms of placing yourself in the game, but it really reduces the impact of emotionallly charged scenes (IE: Chrono's death against Lavos. While it upset me, I think it would have been a lot more upsetting if I'd been attached to his character's personality. Instead, it was kind of like a silent avatar getting blown up. And technically, since he's supposed to be us, that should have been game over. ^^;;
Epsonite - January 13, 2005 08:41 PM (GMT)
THERE WERE LUFIAS PAST 2??!!?
Meh...crono wouldnt be that bad with a voice but hmm...you could make it like pokemon snap you ahve a microphone and yer crono and what ever you say gets the relationship up between yer party...
XD
Knives101 - January 14, 2005 10:10 AM (GMT)
 If they made ct into a anime or net flick I could see him with a vioce. But as I'm sure many others have pointed out, the ct series has a tradition of having silent heroes.
BrownMan - January 15, 2005 04:07 AM (GMT)
Id think Crono with a voice would define a personality. and I dont think thats what you want. You want a main char with your own personallity, making your decisions. I mean, with someone elses voice, it wouldnt be a traditional CT role playing game
Knives101 - January 15, 2005 06:46 AM (GMT)
 And really if he did have a voice what do you think he'd sound like?
Moogle Man - January 15, 2005 06:54 AM (GMT)
Knives101 - January 15, 2005 06:56 AM (GMT)
 Retorical Question there bub.
Aside though I'd have to say teen gohan would fit him better.
Celera - January 15, 2005 08:15 AM (GMT)
(I'm finally back online. O__O)
If it were a traditional RPG, we'd get to pick out our character, of course, so we girls wouldn't be disenfrancized, and that way we could flirt with the boy characters. ^__^ Also if it were a traditional RPG our DM would constantly be trying to destroy the party by putting bosses against us that are like fifteenth level, and thus my fighter mage would become too high a level too quickly, and the DM either would quit out of frusteration or unleash some sort of demi-god on us, and then... Oh wait--this is CT. O__O Ahhh... Funny AD&D memories. ^^
And I think he'd sound like Gohan too. Though I dunno, I think Chrono might be too cool for the DBZ VA pool.
Shiryuu - January 15, 2005 10:19 AM (GMT)
I say give it a try, let crono have a voice.
Besides, I don't think people are going to not try this game just because Crono have a voice? Are they really that petty?
