Since I'm at a loss here... perhaps someone can steer me in a general direction of where I can begin 3d modeling. Many people would like to help on this project but simply don't have the experience. Being a C++ programmer myself, I want to learn so I can contribute my fair share. Thanks to anyone who can help.

If you can't try looking for Gmax, it's the 3d Max without the rendering options, but it's free. So if you want to do game models or trying to learn how to model, Gmax is the best to start.

Just keep looking, you'll find the real working 3ds max some time. 3ds max 4 and 5 are almost the same basically. When your new at it, you wont find much of a diff.
