Title: New Competition!

TheBrain - April 29, 2004 09:37 PM (GMT)
I shouldn't post something like this since i will loose interest of people on our project, but since this screenies are so awesome, that any fan can't be indifferent.

By some time ago i've been finding a few remakes/sequels projects with a search engine, and by investigating and contacting those teams i've found that they don't have much stuff. The only team that strongly captivated my interest was this one, Ressurection Games.

Yes, the one that a few years ago was interviewed by GameSpot and was doing an N64 remake of CT. Back then i thought that was totally BS because we never heard anything from them.

Some months ago i've contacted the only person i could find of their team, Mathew Valente, and asked him if they were interested a Joint project and collaboration, he politely declined, and today i found why.

They have been building up their secretly totally house-made engine for their Chrono Trigger Demos, and they released some screenies.

The reason he declined is because we are totally out of their league, here are the pictures, drool yourself over them:

Well, i hope they suceed doing the rest of their demo remakes, and they change their mind and do the rest of the game...

I know i might just signed the death sentence of our mod, but since they don't have any plans by now of doing the entire game, and the reasons we're doing this is to build experience and because we like so much CT, we won't quit (well, at least I won't). I hope all our team members/collaborators and community members stay with us at least to check our progress and give their input.

And don't worry, these screens just add an extra incentive to really improve ourselfs, someday we'll have models at least similar to theirs.

EDIT: Oh, btw, we don't totally suck, i like more my 3D letters made in 3dSMax6/PSP7.0 in our alpha tittle screen :P

At least they were made by me in 3D and look exactly like the original ones B)
Note that the pendulum isn't like that anymore, it has a shiny shader now...:)

Validus - April 29, 2004 10:02 PM (GMT)
Man, that's really awesome. It's to bad that they wouldn't consider joining with us though.

I wouldn't mind even if it was the oposite...

I know your feeling...

Validus, btw, can you see the concept picture of Cronos face? Can you do something like this with him instead?
It needs to be Front, Back, Left or Right and Iso. I've tried to explain that to previous character sketchers but they couldn't do it. And it needs to be in Akira Toriyama art style... because the more similar and proportional the sketch it is the better it looks in the end:
user posted image
^^Is missing the front one... but it's one of the best examples how sketch artists should do their drawings to help the modelers. Don't forget to align all the body parts in every view...

Validus - April 29, 2004 11:17 PM (GMT)
Sure, I can do that. I would be happy to, in fact. The character sketches that are on my art page were purely for examples and I don't really think you could classify them as concept art anyway, so yeah I will probably start the Crono concept sketch tonight.

BTW where did you get the picture of the Mithra FFXI concept art?

Also: Do you think the monster sketches are ok the way I have them, or should they all be lined up like the character ones should be?

TheBrain - April 29, 2004 11:43 PM (GMT)
If they were aligned they would help much more.

Validus - April 29, 2004 11:45 PM (GMT)
Ok I can redo them then, but I will start working on the Crono sketch first.

SSJoseph - April 30, 2004 01:30 AM (GMT)
This is bad.
I seen who this guy works for...he works with some big people.

Better hurry this production up.
I better join the team soon.

Also my trip is at 6:00 AM (April 30th if anyone cares)
So I will try and be online as much as I can till then

Apocalypse - April 30, 2004 02:38 AM (GMT)
...It looks so... pretty. But think about it, such graphics would require a Quantum computer to run them (sarcasm). The average computer DEFINENTALLY could not run graphics like that... i'm not even sure if the consoles could support graphics like that. I like their Crono model, but I also like what i've seen at this project as well. One model i've been interested in seeing for some time now has been Crono... I hope to see it sometime within the next few weeks/month.

If I remember correctly, a certain member WAS modeling Crono, but it hasn't been mentioned for a while. What exactly is going on with that?

As for this "competition" (as Brain put it), I don't think there really is one. They are making a mere demo of a few parts of the game. Sure, they probably will look really "shiny", but they wont be as good if they are just mere portions. For now, I'd say this remake is in the lead, regardless of graphics. ;)

zentho - April 30, 2004 02:39 AM (GMT)
Also, I believe their demo is for console only, not PC.

Validus - April 30, 2004 02:39 AM (GMT)
Ok I updated my site with the new Crono concept model sketch. It contains a front view, side view and a back view. It's not perfect, but I tried.

You can view my page here or on my signature.

So what is the point then of releasing a demo to console systems? Are they looking for a profit from it or maybe it is just to put there name out there?

Knives101 - April 30, 2004 03:51 AM (GMT)
 They've got some good stuff. But I don't think that'll sway anyone from here so I wouldn't worry or anything. ;)

John - April 30, 2004 07:15 AM (GMT)
Yep. My home is here.
And I'm sure zentho agrees.

Knives - April 30, 2004 12:11 PM (GMT)
Oh my god. Wow. We are screwed, man. We are screwed.

I still say we keep making the mod anyway. After all we've all gotten started anyway so we might as well finish it. We can get models that good too eventually.

Do you know if they are distributing it free or not? If they aren't we may have a chance.

I'll be with this mod to the end though.

zentho - April 30, 2004 05:51 PM (GMT)
Same here bro. The really cool thing about a Chrono Trigger mod is the fanbase. There is such an invested interest in Chrono Trigger that even if we give up (which we wont ;)) there will be people willing to pick up the project and run with it. I feel that the CTRP will be a success no matter what, as long as there are fans who want to see a 3D Chrono Trigger.

Lol, you don't need to be that stressed... We're doing this for fun, i've refered to their project as "competition", but that was just a joke, we're not really in a competition :). We're all CT fans...

The only thing that their project means is that we need to take time and improve ourselfs. After all i believe they started 4 years ago, the GameSpot interview was done at least 3 or 4 years ago, so they had much more time to learn.

And they will distribute their "tribute project" free, almost certainly.
And we will have at least something "Cronish" to play until we finish ;).

Alezunde - April 30, 2004 08:09 PM (GMT)
I remember hearing about this. It was odd because I heard about it, then it almost literally vanished from the internet, except for that small news article on Gamespot.
I believe that they're making this for the N64 emulator. That was what it said on Gamespot.
Anyhow - for all of our team members out there - this should serve as some inspiration. ;)
Our MOD should look better than this. We are using the Unreal2k4 engine, after all.

Jack - April 30, 2004 10:06 PM (GMT)
Well I don't see this as competition at all. They are making a demo for a consol, where as we are making a full game for the computer. I'm thinking that the reason they are making this game as a demo and for consol is that these guys are making a showcase game to show to game compnys they want to get in to, a sort of one big digital resume, I have seen things done like this before. Also, ours is for computer, where as a consol game will be VERY hard to get to the masses, considering that they are not going to have a publishing compony to help them.

What they are doing is exelant for getting a job (Hell, I plan to do the same thing), they are showing there programming/game creation abilitys in one gaming showcase, but are not compleating the game (The reason they are making it for consol is probally to show componys that they are capable of programming for consol systems). I think that this project is actually good for us since we will have something to grade our stuff off of, this may seem kind of hard but I think that we should try to 'beat' their grafics, games that have OK grafics that work well with evreyone dont get the notice, the ones with good grafics that work with good computers get the notice.

Knives101 - April 30, 2004 10:27 PM (GMT)
 If thats true its probably squarenix, or nintendo.

Jack - April 30, 2004 10:39 PM (GMT)
If what is true?

Knives - May 1, 2004 12:13 AM (GMT)
Sorry, I was kind of shocked when I first saw this. I'm really not that stressed. I just overreact like that sometimes. Well, their work is pretty sweet, I must acknowledge that, and any game company that doesn't hire those guys is insane. I will still be sticking by this mod though because I simply love recreating all my favorite locations from CT so much! Besides, we have no time limits here. No pressure at all to put this mod out any time soon, so we can take the time to make it as absolutely cool as we possibly can.

I still look forward to playing their version, though. That Chrono model is sweet!

d0t.enix - May 1, 2004 12:51 AM (GMT)
Hmm , they'll port it on Dreamcast since its the only thing they can do legally.
And Pc , from what i saw i think they'll make the full game. Sadly Enought a project as awesome as that would be obsolete without completing it.

LIke Someone above said , there is no competition , You guys are making a mod , they are redevollping the whole game.

Apocalypse - May 1, 2004 01:22 AM (GMT)
Erm... actually this remake project is planning to completely remake the game, add some new stuff, AND do it on a MOD. They plan to make a mere demo so... there really isn't much purpose to think of it as "doomsday".

As for the recently seen drawing of Crono, I like it. It looks actually quite accurate... even in comparison to Akira Toriyama's style. The only flaw is that he might be a little too short.

Actually they said that it is just a demo. I don't know but if they were real nice they may give us some stuff to work with once they are done, or we could pay them (Bah, wishful thinking lol).

Alezunde - May 1, 2004 06:35 AM (GMT)
I'm not 100% positive - but I believe that this is for a Nintendo 64 emulator, not a console. Although it may have changed in the years since I've seen that news article.

-Alezunde

John - May 1, 2004 06:44 AM (GMT)
I think it started off as an N64 demo.
I'm sure they've moved on. But I think the MOD community, though probably not up to par with these pros (yet), is a lot better. A lot of communication and interaction.

By gamers, for gamers, right?

maxcool - May 4, 2004 02:20 PM (GMT)
Ok, here is the lowdown on what is going with TSSF's project. I personally have been watching it for quite some time, and they are going to be making it for the PC and a developer-only version for the gamecube.(Which in my mind, I think in time will be leaked) So all in all, yes, they do have amazing models, and yes, they have a really nice Chrono model, but other than that, I have seen a model of Chrono's house and that is it. There are no maps done, no animations, no enemies models. Supposedly, this Wednesday tho, they are dropping that new site (That being May 5th) and well, we will see what happens from there. I really think you guys are shooting at a reasonable star, and that you can make it using relatively easy tools such as 3ds max and the Unreal Engine. Just keep up the good work, I love the character models and the level you have modeled out so far, I am just waiting patiently to see my Crono. Thanks again, and sorry things didn't work out Brain.

Your pal,
Maxcool

tssf - May 5, 2004 05:10 PM (GMT)
Just because you don't see something doesn't mean it doesn't exist. ;)

TheBrain - May 6, 2004 01:25 AM (GMT)
He is right :), we can't show always the good stuff ;).

John - May 8, 2004 11:20 AM (GMT)
Hey they updated their site!
Looks pretty cool.

I like the end of time stuff.

I'm looking forward to more stuff from our team.
Let's rock their world with the UT2k4 engine!

Apocalypse - May 8, 2004 05:03 PM (GMT)
It looks like their project is starting to come together. It looks interesting... perhaps i'll look into it a bit once it is released. I like their models (they like anime-ish) and I also like the music they made. I think I like our version of "Undersea-Palace" a little better than theirs, but I really, REALLY,
REALLY!!! like their version of the music for Zeal. it's everything I thought it should be.

Don't worry over it though John, you've impressed me with your releases as well. ;)

propagator4 - May 8, 2004 07:42 PM (GMT)
I'm going to agree with Apoc that our version of the Undersea Palace is better, theirs is a bit too busy for me. However, I think their artwork of Magus is also quite impressive, I like it better than the one I've seen released from this site. (Not a shot at our artist)

TheBrain - May 8, 2004 08:47 PM (GMT)
We'll have our new site/content and update ready in one or two weeks.

"And the clone wars has just begun..."
lol ;)

WolfPack - May 8, 2004 09:59 PM (GMT)
Lets not try to look at this a death blow to us. lol. After all, its only a demo. The CTRMP team is making the whole game. I don't think we'll have much to worry about once the team gets started.

Oh,btw brain, i was wondering.... Could i get on the team as a think tank? I really want to be on the team, but i can't draw, and as of now can't program. Let me know :D :D

SSJoseph - May 8, 2004 10:47 PM (GMT)
lol me to, I must get into those credits somehow.
Also, man..there music is better then JOHN'S!!!!

No offence buddy
But..maybe I can "convince" them to affiliate with us ::did someone say cash::
And help us with the project.

That would have to get me into the credits...it MUST!
or maybe when there done with that...they will help us.

OR SHUT USDOWN

GalaxyFalcon - May 8, 2004 10:59 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't worry about them shutting us down, they're just doing a demo, but its a damn good one. I think they're actually trying to hit the video game scene for a proffession, were as youre all doing this for fun, correct?

Apocalypse - May 8, 2004 11:10 PM (GMT)
As Brain said many, MANY months ago; all people who give useful ideas that are added to the game wil be mentioned in the credits. Everyone on these forums has given at least one good idea.... so I wouldn't be surprised if we all were on there.

The demo is a good one. They definentally could recreate the entire game if they wanted to, but I don't think they want to spend THAT much time on it since they wont exactly be getting paid for it. They say their game will be appearing at E3... which I find quite interesting... :o

The full game beats a demo, however. This game may not have graphics quite that nice, but I believe we can all rest assured that it will be "work of art" upon its completion. B)

propagator4 - May 8, 2004 11:45 PM (GMT)
I think we're missing a vital point here, that being their demo will be free to the public. Therefore, there would be no profit for them in "shutting us down," because they aren't getting money from their release, and our games aren't in competition. It's been said before, theirs is a demo, quite likely to show the job market what they can do, and ours is a full game, albeit a mod.

Furthermore, even if they wanted to, shutting us down is not in their power. What we are doing here is completely up to us, they have no influence over it.

WolfPack - May 9, 2004 12:30 AM (GMT)
Yes. I'm not worry about that.

About the credits. Theres more people posting here than in the orgianl programers ending. lol. If we get anything it will be one guy that says something like "HI! I represent all the good people at the remake forums who helped with ideas"
lol. Unless, ofcourse, the ending is enlarged.

Alezunde - May 9, 2004 06:23 AM (GMT)
Here's another project that I've been interested in for a while, and I just found the link for it again:
