Title: Multiplayer?
Description: Will the CTR Project have it?
Alezunde - March 19, 2004 09:31 PM (GMT)
I remember reading the intro topic about this, listing all of the Pros and Cons of each engine considered for the MOD, and one of the Pros for the Unreal Engine(which is being used) was Multiplayer.
Do you plan to try and incorporate Multiplayer into this project?

It turns out, that they do in fact plan to include multiplayer. What I have heard of has mainly been an Arena-like multiplayer mode. In which, you will face other people's characters in a battle. I have also heard talk of cooperative play mentioned... but you can only use one person's character.
Not much talk about the subject has been mentioned for a while... :ph43r:

It would be interesting to see them add it in. Maybe a battle arena at the fair that you can IP to or something. Co op would be cool too, although it would have to be something like how it was in ff9

Huhh...I guess it will be strange see two Cronos fighting one against other.Or two Frogs...If your guys can do, maybe a player control the 1st character, another player control the 2nd and the last player control the 3rd character. It may be used if your guys make some news dungeons, like a switch activated by a character. One player must be on the switch and the others go for the opened passage.

Hehe... good idea. Actually, that has been mentioned before... and I think (am not sure) it might have been accepted. It would be a relatively good idea... but so is the arena. Also, I think there should be some way of stopping the different characters from running away from the group. Perhaps have a lead player that the camera follows... and something that keeps the other players within the group. Just a suggestion. B)
GalaxyFalcon - March 20, 2004 08:01 PM (GMT)
I think a three player CO-OP game would be a very good idea. They could use something Seiken Densetsu 3, where if you move out of the camera you run back to player 1. And the players should all be able to access the menu, (Which all players will see brought up.) and then they can change char/equipemen. dunno, though, its just a suggestion but i think a cooperative mode through IP or somthing would be an excellent addtion. (And an Arena mutliplater would be quite the awsome, as well.)
WolfPack - March 20, 2004 10:07 PM (GMT)
It really all depends on how much the creation team wants to spend on doing a multiplayer mode, if any.
Apocalypse - March 21, 2004 04:51 PM (GMT)
Due to my understanding of prior posts, I think we can take it for granted that they plan to at least have an Arena-Like multiplayer game. What I am not sure about, is the 2-3 player co op. It's possible... but may not be desirable considering what they plan to accomplish... and the time they plan to do that in.

Wolfpack is right - Multiplayer programming takes a lot of time and effort.
Although the Unreal Engine has multiplayer in it, so that may simplify the process by a lot.
If a Multiplayer Coop is instituted, I could see it working out pretty well with no change in the battle system - just give control to each character to a different player.
Although you might have to incorporate some sort of system to signal when you wanted to do a tech with another player.
Perhaps some sort of permission window:
[Do you want to perform the tech? Yes - No]
Movement outside of battle could work several ways:
-Movement might just be controlled by the first player though.
-It could even switch players between battles.
-You could even have a free-moving system for each player, but nobody is
allowed to go too far from the First Player - similar to FF:Crystal Chronicles.
-Like Seiken Densetsu 3, and someone mentioned in another post - force the
player to run back to the First Player when they get too far away.
You'd probably have to have a chat too.
Anyways, those are my ideas.

Well, I shure as hell want to add multiplayer, but it seems it would be a major pain for the programmers to do.
My current ideas to be made into the game (If its possable by the programmers are)
- An arena at evrey time period. If you played Chrono Cross you know what I am talking about by Arena, the Arena in them Cruise Ship in CC, where you control various monsters and figh other monsters in a certain type of bracket system. Well, we could have a single player like that, and a multi player where you fight other people controling monsters.
- In the arena you could also battle other people over the internet that you 'Challenge'. And example of this, is that in a 'server' browser, you look at people names, with the level of their characters, and when you click on them, it send them a message "So and so challenges you to a dual" and if they accept, you start a battle. People would not accept if a level 70 person challenges a level 20, thats why you could decline.
With some coding I assume it woudl be possable to have a 4 way battle or Team battles, AKA, someone joins a server with a ready room (just like Gunbound) and once 4 people join, they start a battle at a certain arena (the admin could select the apperance of the areana).
I was also thinking that as a option, people could select to play just multiplayer in gametypes that give you characters to battle with (AKA: Select any monsters or main characters to fight with)
-I really have no idea if a co-op mode is possable. I favor the FF: CC style. I will have to ask Brain.

I would be satisfied by a very simple multiplayer. A friend and I decided to go through CT again together, but thats hard when hes not over here. So we got the ROM and zsnes and we play on and off switching control over the internet. It wouldn't be that hard to do in coding for this mod(atleast not compared to some other things that will need to be done for the mod) but it would add a nice feature for people that just don't like to play alone. Like me :)

It would be pretty hard to make a multiplayer for this, actually. I've seen some code used to make SIMPLE online games... and I must say, it looks quite complicated. It is definentally posible to get some simple multiplayer games (mini games at the fair... or the arena), but I would not get your hopes up for the Seiken Densetsu-like multiplayer.
Alezunde - March 23, 2004 04:11 AM (GMT)
Lol yes - multiplayer coding is quite complex.
Other ideas:
Each player could control a character, and they wouldn't have to stick together - so they could free roam. But perhaps characters would have to leave an area as a group.
For battles, each player could engage in their own battles, but another player could join a battle currently in progress by engaging with a group of monsters already fighting. You could only do techs if two or more players were engaged in a battle together.
Those are my ideas for now. ;)

Well, how about the FF9 style? The game is controlled by one person ( in chrono trigger, we could make it where you can switch who is in control) and when it comes to battle, 2 people take control, each having contol over one of the charecters ( FF9 has 4 per party so its usually 2 and 2, for ct the 3rd go go to who ever). Anyways, another idea.

How would this work? I mean would you use Melee weapons and the Experience you have gained from game play (kind of like that boxing game wher eyou build up your players stats and face them again your friends boxer).
Would it be RPG or a battle, like Unreal?
TheBrain - April 6, 2004 03:01 PM (GMT)
We haven't planned all the details for that since it's an addition, thats why this forums exist ;), to you sugest stuff that would be cool. Most of the stuff we discuss is possible to do if we get time to learn and develop or the right people to do it.

If it is of any consequence... I will be learning how to program and we will even cover quite alot of grounds concerning object oriented within the next few months. Perhaps I can learn some techniques for multiplayer games via my programming class. It may be C++... but the languages are pretty similar, and the idea is relatively the same. Obviously... i'll have to get Unreal to program in Unreal... and i'll definentally have to read up on the subject to be an effective programmer for the Team. Take it easy though guys... afterall... it may be me or a few others programming these monstrosities you're requesting. B)

I would love seeing multiplayer added for a few reasons. I have some friends who have never played CT and it would be fun to experience it with them/relive the adventure and I would really like to get an excercise in coding multiplayer stuff.
SSJoseph - May 1, 2004 05:49 PM (GMT)
well if it is gonna be in there...here is A problem
How can you control all 3 of your characters.
Well...you cant, I think A kingdom hearts style thing would be good.
Give your 2 Un-Playable character an AI, for that arena stuff..and ONLY for arena, offline you control them again

I'm new here, but I'm a C.S. major and would really like to help out. I'm about to call it a night, but I've got lots of freetime now that my university's let out for summer. I haven't read all the threads yet, but probably will be through them later today when I wake up.
About this multiplayer business, I was also thinking that perhaps since there are 7 (counting Magus) playable characters, and by the end of CT you can interchange them all at just about any time, that you could have more than 3 characters in your party (to allow more ppl in multiplay). Of course, this would mean some proportional beefing up of baddies to the number in your party.
Also, in regards to the "Arena" ideas, it sounds interesting but I agree that it is kind of weird having 2 Cronos, and won't they both be casting the exact same spells? I think that maybe for the Arena-play we could add more techs and weapons to mix things up a bit. Chrono Cross seems more an "arena" type game because 1) waaay more playable characters, 2) waaaay more strategies in regards to fighting/spellcasting. I mean imagine Crono v. Crono, it'll just be most powerful attack + Luminaire etc. and healing. Not much strategy, just a battle of attrition. If you wanna go Crono v. Magus, it'll be same thing where each person is taking advantage of other's weakness (White v. Shadow), but really no strategy involved.
On the other hand, if there were more spells or weapons (or perhaps have some "secret" ones that the creators add, *this would be included in the UN-original gameplay so as not to clash with the hardcore CT fans, and I assume "arena" would also be un-original since it never existed in CT and only somewhat in CC*) like in Chrono Cross (which had field effect, and things to trap spells or create immunities *CT does have some immunity spells, but bleh*). In short, I'm saying that for arena stuff it should really be expanded upon (since it's already expanding on CT). Having 3v3 will make it interesting, and if parties are greater than 3 even *more* interesting arena-battles, but I think some new spells/weapons might help too, something to give a bit more strategy.
Last thing, has anyone talked about techs appearance in the Unreal enviornment? Like how you guys are gonna show things being cast etc? I haven't read all the threads, but again I'll have 'em all read pretty soon, in the meantime maybe someone can point me to something? I don't expect anyone to listen to any of the junk suggestions I just put since i'm a noob on the board and this is my first post, but I really would like to contribute in anyway possible :)
