Title: Superman Movie News
Description: News and Rumors Go Here About New Movie

TheBookerMan - August 21, 2004 06:44 AM (GMT)
Okay, I love this idea. For the past few weeks, we have gotten a TON of news about the new Superman movie. First, it was stated that Bryan Singer and his buddies would write the movie and Singer would direct. I almost fainted when I heard that.

The latest rumor was that Tom Welling, the man who plays Clark Kent on Smallville, would be playing Superman in Singer's movie, Superman Returns as it is currently titled. The rumors were dismissed but at a recent MTV press event, Welling said that he was going to be involved in a big movie but he couldn't talk about it. This fueled rumors that he would be Superman in the new movie. Well folks, the rumors just got a bit stronger. According to various websites, Welling has stated that he will play Superman if Michael Rosenbaum, Lex Luthor on Smallville, will be allowed to play Lex Luthor in Superman Returns. I wouldn't be surprised if we heard more news on this soon.

Purple Ranger 14 - August 21, 2004 06:51 AM (GMT)
Can't blame Tom. He & Michael have become great pals.

TheBookerMan - August 22, 2004 05:18 AM (GMT)
Yeah I think they are both perfect for the roles they already play. I couldn't see anyone else really playing those roles but them.

Purple Ranger 14 - August 22, 2004 05:29 AM (GMT)
Yep. Plus, Rosenbaum is all ready bald.

Optimusprime81 - August 22, 2004 01:11 PM (GMT)
Okay that was intresting to find out.

TheBookerMan - August 23, 2004 04:58 AM (GMT)
Rosenbaum used to have hair. He shaves it during the taping of the latest season then lets it grow back out during the time off between seasons.

Purple Ranger 14 - August 23, 2004 05:15 AM (GMT)
He was in Urban Legends. He's the one who got a draino/pop rocks death.

TheBookerMan - August 25, 2004 04:23 AM (GMT)
I didn't know that was him in Urban Legends. That's pretty cool. He was in Bringing Down The House with Steve Martin, Queen Latifah, and Eugene Levy. I think he had a toupee on because it didn't look like he had natural hair for me. He was probably at a part in Smallville's filming where his head was shaved so they made him a toupee.

Mike Millar from Marvel Comics has stated that his source who told him that McG was off Superman Returns and that Singer was on has now said that Jim Caviezel is the frontrunner to play Superman. How confident is Millar that he's right? So confident that he has put up $1000. of his own money against Harry Knowles of aint-it-cool-news.com. If Mike is wrong then Mike will pay $1000. of his own money to a charity of Harry's choice. If Harry is wrong then Harry will play $1000. of his own money to a charity of Mike's choice. Either way, I do think Mike is right because imdb.com is running a story saying that Jim Caviezel is about to sign the contract to play Superman in the new film. I hope it's true because I think that Jim is the best choice.

Purple Ranger 14 - September 3, 2004 04:48 AM (GMT)
I got something from WarnerBros. that says Singer WILL direct.

TheBookerMan - September 3, 2004 05:55 AM (GMT)
Oh yeah, Singer is confirmed. Caviezel is the one who is not yet confirmed.

Purple Ranger 14 - September 3, 2004 06:08 AM (GMT)
Okay.

TheBookerMan - September 4, 2004 04:07 AM (GMT)
Remember what I said about Jim Caviezel possibly playing Superman? Well now it seems that it's pretty much certain to happen. The reason for that is due to the fact that in an interview recently conducted on tv with Jim, he was asked about the rumor that he would be playing Superman. His response? "I can neither confirm nor deny that rumor." while adding a smile to that response. Hmmm, sounds like he's already signed to me and they are telling him to keep quiet in order to keep it a surprise.

Purple Ranger 14 - September 4, 2004 04:29 AM (GMT)
Possibly.

TheBookerMan - October 20, 2004 07:25 AM (GMT)
While Bryan Singer has the most respect for Jim Caviezel, our Superman has now been chosen. Brandon Routh(pronounced Ruth I believe) has been confirmed as being the new Superman. His birthday is October 9th, the day that Christopher Reeve fell into his coma and the day before Chris died(October 10th). Brandon looks like a mix of Chris Reeve, Dean Cain, and Smallville's Tom Welling. Aint-it-cool-news.com's Harry Knowles, who broke the story, believes Warner Brothers is holding off on the official announcement in the wake of Christopher Reeve's surprising death. I don't know if that's true or not, but expect to hear an official announcement from Warner Brothers very soon.

The rumors also continue by stating that Kevin Spacey and Patrick Stewart, who have worked with Singer on previous movies(Spacey in The Usual Suspects and Stewart in the first two X-Men movies) ) are up for the parts of Lex Luthor(Spacey) and Jor-El(Stewart). I love that idea and I heard that one woman from the new tv show Lost, Evangeline Lilly, is a frontrunner for the role of Lois Lane. Topher Grace from That 70's Show and Adam Brody of The O.C. are up for the part of Jimmy Olsen. Either of those guys would make fine Jimmys. We should hear news soon about the exact cast so keep watching the E channel.

Purple Ranger 14 - October 21, 2004 04:28 AM (GMT)
Cool.

TheBookerMan - January 2, 2005 04:13 AM (GMT)
Here is the latest Superman movie news. Kate Bosworth has apparently claimed the role of Lois Lane for herself. She is best known for the movie Win A Date With Tad Hamilton. According to superman-v.com, Kate beat out Claire Danes and Elisha Cuthbert for the role and it is believed that she is best for the role due to her being lesser known than those two actresses. I think this is one of the best choices Warner Brothers has made in the past few months and it really makes me believe that they learned their lesson from the disgrace that was called Catwoman. See, you can't be campy and throw something onto the screen and then expect fans to enjoy it. It may have taken a lot of money to get it done, but if the story looks like garbage and it looks dumb in nature, then it's not gonna work. Period.

Superman-v.com is also stating to tentatively expect a group photo of the cast in January 2005.

BTW, Superman-v.com is the same site that broke the news that Brandon Routh would in fact be playing The Man Of Steel. So it is the most reliable bit of news I've seen in a long time.

Purple Ranger 14 - January 2, 2005 05:03 AM (GMT)
I was hoping for someone sexier & hotter.

TheBookerMan - January 2, 2005 05:19 AM (GMT)
Well the two women who were once considered the frontrunner for the role of Lois are now busy. Evangeline Lilly from Lost is busy with that series and they wouldn't let her play Lois or something like that. Charisma Carpenter is no way going to be able to play her, probably since Warner Brothers is strongly considering her for the title role in the new movie version of Wonder Woman. Sounds good to me. :)

Superman-v.com

Go there because there is a pic of Kate there.

Purple Ranger 14 - January 2, 2005 05:21 AM (GMT)
Any head to toe pics of her???

TheBookerMan - January 2, 2005 09:56 AM (GMT)
If you go to imdb.com and search for her there they have a couple of head to toe pics. She's got a good body folks.

BTW, in a recent interview with Patrick Stewart, he said Bryan Singer hasn't talked to him in depth about playing Jor-El, but he seemed to indicate that he would be up for it. He said something like "I've been in two franchises, why not a third or a fourth?" Hmmm could he be dropping hints? He would be damn good as Jor-El so I say go for it. Yeah, Jor-El had hair in the comics, but it doesn't mean he has to in the new movie. It would be nice but Stewart is such a great actor that he wouldn't need hair necessarily.

Purple Ranger 14 - January 3, 2005 05:02 AM (GMT)
You know what region I was refering to, dude.

TheBookerMan - January 7, 2005 04:58 AM (GMT)
I have a MAJOR update on Superman Returns folks!

First off, Hollywood Reporter has CONFIRMED that Kevin Spacey, fresh off his role as the legendary singer Bobby Darin, will in fact be the villainous Lex Luthor in the movie! Congratulations Kevin Spacey!

Secondly, Entertainment Tonight publically stated that Kate Bosworth is in intense negotiations to play Superman's main love interest, Lois Lane. Looks like she's pretty much signed, sealed, and delivered. BTW, Kate costarred with Kevin Spacey in Beyond The Sea. Not a bad movie to start picking people out of.

As if that weren't enough, Shawn Ashmore aka Iceman from the X-Men movies and a friend of Bryan Singer, will more than likely be playing Jimmy Olsen. Reports have also recently surfaced that Jude Law is in the running to play either Metallo or General Zod.

This is an AWESOME cast and I definitely cannot wait to see them come together.

BTW Bobby, I knew what you were talking about in the post above. :)

Purple Ranger 14 - January 7, 2005 05:24 AM (GMT)
Isn't she playing his wife in Beyond The Sea???

TheBookerMan - January 7, 2005 06:25 AM (GMT)
Yeah I think so. Either way, those are some good casting choices there.

Purple Ranger 14 - January 7, 2005 06:49 AM (GMT)
True. But don't forget that Perry and the Kents are left.

TheBookerMan - January 8, 2005 06:59 AM (GMT)
I heard the movie takes place after Superman II so I don't know if the Kents will be included or not.

My pick for Perry White was actually Lane Smith. Unfortunately, Lane is no longer acting due to the fact that he was diagnosed with ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. He was so great as Perry on Lois and Clark and he was the only cast member from that show that could really have been in the movie and people would've cheered. Well, him and Teri Hatcher. :)

So since Lane cannot be playing Perry White, my choice is now Dean Stockwell. If you look at the current comics, he looks like Perry and Al is kinda like Perry but he would have to be less womanizing in this movie though lol. Seriously though, I think he would be a good Perry White and it would still allow him to be on the new Quantum Leap series Sci-Fi is starting.

The rumor was that Steve Martin was gonna play Perry White. That was only a rumor though and while Steve is a great actor, he doesn't seem right as Perry to me.

If all else fails, bring back Michael McKean who played Perry on Smallville and will be returning later this season.

***************************UPDATE*******************************

Well, the casting updates are coming fast and furious now folks. As of January 13th, 2005, Hugh Laurie and James Marsden are joining the new Bryan Singer film known as Superman Returns. Hugh Laurie, better known as Mr. Little from the Stuart Little movies, will be playing the editor of The Daily Planet, Perry White.

James Marsden who played Scott Summers aka Cyclops in the X-Men films will be playing Richard White, Lois Lane's love interest. Yes, his character will be related to Perry White though the studio will not comment if they will be father and son. Basically, that's pretty much how it's probably gonna turn out.

Great casting choices. Hugh is a great actor and James has the advantage of working with Bryan in the past. Now if Patrick Stewart as Jor-El turns out to be true then it will be an even better film.

Purple Ranger 14 - January 21, 2005 05:21 AM (GMT)
So the Man Of Steel Meets The First X-Man.

TheBookerMan - January 22, 2005 05:33 AM (GMT)
The following news comes from scifi.com:

Stamp Talks Smallville's Jor-El
Terence Stamp, who voices the character of Jor-El in The WB's Superman series Smallville, told SCI FI Wire that it's unlikely viewers will see him in the flesh. "TV's too tough for an actor of my age, you know?" Stamp said in an interview. "I've got enormous respect for TV actors. I couldn't do that work. So it's unlikely that you're going to see me on TV."

Smallville marks a reunion of sorts for the veteran U.K. actor and the Superman mythos: Stamp wowed audiences in the 1970s in the first two Superman movies, playing the evil General Zod.

"When they came to me for Smallville and said, 'Do you want to be in it?' I said, 'Really, no,'" Stamp recalled. "And then they said, 'Well, how about would you like to be a voice over?' And I said, 'Yeah, I'd love that.' I have this really expensive voice. I mean, it costs dollars to arrive at this. I don't mean I earn a lot from it. And then when they said, 'Well, how about you play Superman's dad?' I said, 'Yeah, but ... [didn't I already do that?]' They said, 'No, we know you were Zod, but would you like to do it?' I said, 'Yeah, if you're sure you want me.'"

Stamp was aware that he was working in the shadow of another big-screen Jor-El: Marlon Brando, who famously played the white-haired character in 1978's Superman. "I said, 'Do you want it like a Brando? ... I do a very good Brando voice.' And they said, 'No, no, no! Your voice is fine.' So it was ... a treat, really. It's like a treat, because I get a lot of credit. ... A young porter of my building in London where I stay, [he says,] 'Oh, Mr. Stamp, I heard you were in Smallville.' So it's like a connection with a whole new generation of viewers. " Stamp will next be seen as the blind ninja master Stick in Elektra, which opens Jan. 14.

He also stated that he felt Jude Law could possibly play Son of Zod but he didn't know about him taking over the role he played in Superman II unless it was a prequel or something like that. Very classy person and I have tremendous respect for Terence Stamp.

Purple Ranger 14 - January 22, 2005 05:43 AM (GMT)
Sweet.

TheBookerMan - January 24, 2005 05:15 AM (GMT)
Expect there to be more casting announcements VERY soon, possibly this week. Shawn Ashmore will probably be announced as Jimmy Olsen and I wouldn't be surprised if Jude Law is confirmed to be playing General Zod. Also, look for the casting announcement for Kal-El's Kryptonian parents, Jor-El and Lara, to be made. My money is still on Patrick Stewart for Jor-El. Don't know who would play Lara but Diane Lane is looking like a good choice to me.

Purple Ranger 14 - January 25, 2005 12:33 AM (GMT)
How about Ashley Judd???

TheBookerMan - January 25, 2005 05:54 AM (GMT)
I never thought about Ashley Judd but she's not a bad choice either. Good suggestion man.

Purple Ranger 14 - January 27, 2005 05:43 AM (GMT)
Thanks.

TheBookerMan - February 2, 2005 09:08 AM (GMT)
You're welcome my friend.

Shawn Ashmore was unable to sign onto the new Superman movie to play Jimmy Olsen it seems. The part will now go to Sam Huntington, who played the lead male role in Not Another Teen Movie. He should be good as Jimmy from what I've seen.

Now we should hear whom will play Jor-El and Lara soon. Patrick Stewart and Ashley Judd anyone?

Purple Ranger 14 - February 3, 2005 01:00 AM (GMT)
The male lead in Not Another Teen Movie was the same dude who's playing the Human Torch in Fantastic Four.

This is my 6200th post.

Purple Ranger 14 - February 15, 2005 07:48 PM (GMT)
Rediff.com reported that Kal Penn (Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle) will play the Man of Steel's best friend in Bryan Singer's upcoming Superman movie, according to director Mira Nair, who is working with Penn in the film Namesake

TheBookerMan - February 17, 2005 05:51 AM (GMT)
It's been reported that Kal Penn will actually be playing a flunkie to Lex Luthor from what I've heard. They are still arguing over if he will be Lex's flunkie or Clark's friend but either way, he's a great actor. Definitely cannot wait to see him in the film.

Purple Ranger 14 - April 6, 2005 04:44 PM (GMT)
The Latino Review Web site reported that Superman Returns director Bryan Singer plans on using stock footage of Marlon Brando as Jor-El, which was originally shot by director Richard Donner for 1980's Superman II, but never used.
