There are new astro boy animated cartoons on kids WB saturdays. I guess i'm still getting used to them. To me they just don't have the "feel" of osamu's original work, and i find the "molding" on the characters a bit overdone.

but speaking of the manga....DARKHORSE comics is reprinting all the original astro boy manga. it's really great!

you can see more of osamu's work here:

I've actually seen both the old 1950's episodes and the new series. There's only a few differences between them, but it's still a good show. One of the few on broadcast TV these days. Funny thing is, they waited until years after the creator of Astro Boy died to bring back the series. :ph43r: Weird, huh?

Purple Ranger 14 - February 9, 2004 06:27 AM (GMT)
That is weird.

astro boy was created way back in the late 40's early 50's. by the 70's the character had "run its course" and was no longer appearing in manga and anime. HOWEVER the character was very well known and well loved and became a japanese icon (along with another tezuka creation KIMBA the white lion). though the 2 characters were no longer in manga/anime both were still used (used to this day) on merchadise...t-shirts, coffee mugs, dolls, coloring books etc.
this is the same as many famous USA created cartoon characters such as mickey mouse and bugs bunny. after time the people who were once childhood fans of these characters grow up and some of them get jobs in the cartoon industry. it's not hard to imagine they would want t revive characters they loved as children. that's basically why astro wasn't seen in manga/anime for so many years.

BTW, here's another link that might interest you fans of manga/anime...
