Ashlee's Private Affair
Stars for rent; Plus, Keanu's new squeeze, Paris' naked altruism, Mariah's minion and more ...
May 26, 2005
Got a special occasion coming up? Need a little background music? If you've got some spare change burning a hole in your pocket -- say a million or so -- you could book the singer of your dreams.
Two weeks ago, a British billionaire reportedly shelled out $2.2 million to have Beyoncé and Destiny's Child sultrily sing his son into manhood with an hour-long performance at the teen's bar mitzvah in the South of France. And it seems the trio isn't the only act willing to hire themselves out for private parties.
In the mood for some awkward dance moves and off-key warbling? MTV says Ashlee Simpson is available for exclusive get-togethers for the bargain-basement price of $35,000 a song. Yep, that's right. To hear how much you make her wanna "La La," it'll set you back the cost of a low-end sports car.
Last Friday, Jessica's little sis reportedly performed at New York's tony Cipriani eatery as part of a birthday celebration for the 14-year-old daughter of a well-heeled fashion exec. The theme of the event: Willy Wonka. No word on whether Ash was required to belt out the "Oompa Loompa Song."
Other big names who charge big bucks for private gigs, according to the New York Daily News: Bon Jovi and Paul Simon, whose asking price is between $850,000 to $1 million (Jon Bon Jovi solo is a mere $400,000); the Beastie Boys, who go for $500,000 to $600,000; and Ludacris and Modest Mouse, who each want $100,000. A solo Beyoncé will cost you $750,000, says People.
Still, not every celebrity is willing to trade a personal appearance for cold hard cash. Jesse Metcalfe, who plays Eva Longoria's hunky gardener (and possible baby daddy) on "Desperate Housewives," was recently offered the chance to reprise his role off-camera.
According to Liz Smith, a "wealthy Bel-Air matron" offered the actor $25,000 to put in an appearance -- shirtless, natch -- at a ladies-only baby shower she was tossing at her house.
Seems she wanted Jesse to show up and pretend he was there to trim her hedges (no, that's not a euphemism) and then spend an hour meeting and greeting guests. He politely declined.
Meanwhile, when not performing for sugared-up teens (privately and publicly), Ashlee continues to spend quality time with Wilmer Valderrama.
The New York Post says the singer's bodyguard went into defensive mode recently when he suspected a cellphone-wielding onlooker was trying to snap a photo of her partying with Fez.
"They definitely acted like they had something to hide," a mole surmises to the paper. Simpson's rep insists the two are just friends.

Ashlee Simpson Rejected By Married Taye Diggs
In Touch magazine reports that 'Kevin Hill' star Taye Diggs was hit on by Ashlee Simpson while out clubbing in New York, asking the actor on a date. Diggs politely informed Simpson that he's “very married” to Broadway actress Idina Menzel. "She loves guys," a source said. "She told me Taye was like the hottest guy ever."

Papa Simpson foments feud with Lohan
Sources say Joe Simpson is spreading nasty gossip about the `Mean Girls' starlet
Is Lindsay Lohan really feuding with Jessica Simpson?
Who's spreading all that nasty gossip about a feud between Jessica Simpson and Lindsay Lohan? Some people believe it's Simpson's dad.
Joe Simpson, who is also his daughter's agent, has been "carpet bombing" the tabloids with negative stories about the "Mean Girls" star, according to RadarOnLine. In recent days, details about the feud has appeared in numerous outlets, including In Touch Weekly, Us, Star and Life & Style. "Joe called our head offices himself and ranted and raved about it," a top editor at one of the weeklies told Radar. "It was obvious he wanted to paint Lindsay as a [bleep]. He couldn't believe anyone would dare ban Jessica from any party because, as he said, `She's a huge superstar.' ...Joe will do anything to make sure she's in the papers every week and he knows Lindsay's an easy target."
A rep for Joe Simpson denies that he's the dish-spreader, and Jessica Simpson has recently denied that there's any feud whatsoever.

Simpson Denies Accusations She Physically Threatened Lohan June 11, 2005 - World Entertainment News Network Singer Ashlee Simpson has denied accusations she threatened to attack Lindsay Lohan because the Mean Girls star refused to let her into her party on Saturday night.
The pair have allegedly been embroiled in a bitter feud since Lohan
accused Simpson of "stealing" her ex-boyfriend, actor Wilmer
Valderrama last year.
But the rumours have been fuelled following reports the pair almost had a "catfight" after Lohan banned Ashlee and her sister Jessica from coming to her bash at Los Angeles' Standard venue after the Mtv Movie Awards.
The Simpsons went to Jimmy Fallon's party at Los Angeles' Argyle Hotel instead, and reportedly hit out at Lohan who arrived later.
But they overcame their differences after Lohan explained it was a mistake that they were not let into her party, reports website Pagesix.com.
Lohan's representative confirms the mix-up: "Their names got misplaced on the list."
And Ashlee's spokesperson denies claims the Pieces Of Me star threatened Lohan, adding, "Ashlee and Jessica had a great time at Jimmy's party, which was the hottest one of the night."

Jessica Simpson In Tirade After Getting 86'd By Lohan
The New York Post reports Jessica Simpson was fuming mad at Jimmy Fallon's MTV Movie Awards after party at the Argyle Hotel on Saturday night. "She was screaming how she was going to kick her butt, and had to be separated from Lindsay," a source said. "Ashlee wasn't so upset, but Jessica was furious because she says she is a star and should be let in everywhere." And when Lohan did show up, they ended up making up after Lohan "explained it was a mistake that they were not let into her party."

Ashlee and Ashley trade boyfriends
By Kate Lanahan
Ashlee steals Ashley's beau
In Hollywood, the young starlets swap boyfriends like young boys swap baseball cards. Scarlett Johansson's ex, Jared Leto was recently seen with Lindsay Lohan, while Scarlett has been seeing Katie Holmes's former fling, Josh Hartnett. One celebrity who's not shy about taking her friends' leftovers is Ashlee Simpson. She's been seeing pal, Lindsay Lohan's ex, Wilmer Valderrama, since shortly after the couple broke it off last year. Now she's taken a shine to Ashley Olsen's ex-boyfriend, Scott Sartiano (who dated Anne Hathaway before Ashley). Page Six says the pair were looking awfully friendly at the new Hollywood club, Mood, last Wednesday. A witness said the cannoodling pair "were definitely together." But Ashlee's tricks won't fade Ashley. Olsen will be Valderrama's date at Monday's the Wayuu Taya benefit in NYC, the gossip column says.

Jessica Simpson in GQ
Apparently American men can't get enough of Jessica Simpson. GQ magazine tackles the Texas-raised, God-fearing, platypus-mispronouncing Girl Next Door. "Jessica Simpson sits on the floor of a Los Angeles recording studio, golden hair tumbling, sundress hiked over honey brown knees, skin glowing in the aromatherapy candlelight. She's the picture of corn-fed health, voluptuous yet surprisingly petite. But a shade of unrest clouds her fine features." Note . Its a "really" long read and just one very hot picture of Jessica Simpson in a swimsuit.
The Simpson Sisters' Hollywood Takeover?
The scorching-hot SIMPSON sisters are ready to rule the silver screen this summer -- as both JESSICA and ASHLEE are making their movie debuts in lead roles in the very same month -- August.
Jessica, as most of the universe knows, will be running around in skimpy cutoffs in the 'Dukes of Hazzard,' out August 5, while Ashlee is a bit more covered up in 'Undiscovered,' out August 26.
"It's cool because Jessica and I are doing our first big roles at the exact same time," Ashlee explained. "We call each other and make sure everything is going cool on the set and everything."
Purple Ranger 14 - June 27, 2005 03:16 PM (GMT)
"I'm kind of grungy and she's Daisy Duke," Ashlee admits. "I don't know if I would've been a good Daisy Duke. Not yet. I think Jessica's probably the best Daisy Duke out there."
The light-hearted 'Undiscovered' takes place in the world of up-and-coming artists looking to break into the big time in Los Angeles. Ashlee plays an aspiring actress and tomboy who's dabbling with a singing career.
This isn't the first time Ashlee's been in front of the camera. She previously appeared on "7th Heaven," the ROB SCHNEIDER comedy 'The Hot Chick' and, of course, her own show on MTV, "The Ashlee Simpson Show."
"There's not much romance for me in the movie," she reports, adding, "Not much romance for me at all in my life right now."
Meanwhile, Jessica, who insists she has plenty of romance in her life with husband NICK LACHEY, joins 'American Pie' pal SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT and JOHNNY KNOXVILLE, who star as country cousins Bo and Luke Duke in 'The Dukes of Hazzard.'
Chock-full of car chases and plenty of good humor, the new 'Dukes' finds the good 'ol boys trying to save their family farm from the scheming Boss Hogg, played by BURT REYNOLDS

ASHLEE VS. LINDSAY: NOW IT'S WAR
Late on the evening of June 15, Lindsay Lohan arrived with only her security in tow at the exclusive Hollywood nightclub Mood looking to party, only to discover that her favorite VIP tables were taken. The Herbie: Fully Loaded star's security cleared a path through the thick crowd, and Lindsay marched over to her friend, club promoter Allison Melnick, and waved her hand over the tables packed with party-goers. "But Allison just shook her head no," an eyewitness tells Star, "as if to tell Lindsay she couldn't move anyone for her. So Lindsay sat down at an available table and poured herself a drink."
A BIG JOKE
As fate would have it, Ashlee Simpson - Lindsay's latest rival - was seated just a few feet away, holding court with a gaggle of girlfriends at a prominent VIP table.
One eyewitness says a bottle of Ketel One vodka was sitting out, and Ashlee and her friends were goofing around, sometimes dancing.
However, another eyewitness heard more. "Ashlee was making fun of Lindsay. Ashlee was telling people at her table that she's got a new album coming out and she's written a song on it that's all about how she stole Lindsay's boyfriend." (The boyfriend in question is Wilmer Valderrama, 25. He and Lindsay split last November.)
"While Ashlee was telling the story, she was laughing so hard she was shaking," says the eyewitness. "She despises Lindsay - she thinks she's a big joke."
This latest incident turns up the heat on an already simmering feud. Ashlee, 20, casually dates Wilmer. "They're not boyfriend and girlfriend, per se," a source close to Ashlee tells Star. "But they do have feelings for each other, and they do hook up whenever things are cool, and they're into it." A source close to the Simpsons has said that Lindsay, 18, is still angry at Ashlee for cozying up to Wilmer.
NOT THEIR FIRST BATTLE
On June 4, Lindsay reportedly ordered bodyguards to keep Ashlee and her sister Jessica Simpson, 24, out of an MTV Movie Awards afterparty in West Hollywood. (Later that evening, when former friends Jessica and Lindsay met up, Jessica reportedly threatened, "I'm going to beat your ass.")
Ashlee's rep says, "Any rumors about songs on the album can't be true: She's still working on it." But Ashlee told MTV she would start working on the album in June, so it's totally possible she still could be writing such a song about stealing Wilmer. Stay tuned!

Jessica Simpson Gives The Troops Something To Feel Patriotic About
'GQ' photo spread features actress/singer in American-flag bikini, unzipped camouflage pants.

Just call her "G.I. Jessica."
As the cover girl for GQ's "America" issue, Jessica Simpson is featured in a patriotic pinup spread to raise troops', er, morale. The magazine's homage to wartime glamour girls was inspired by Simpson's most recent ABC variety special, "Nick and Jessica's Tour of Duty." Her visit to American troops in Germany and Iraq, with husband Nick Lachey, left a lasting impression on the "Newlyweds" star.
"It just blew my mind," Simpson told the magazine. "These guys - just kids, 20 years old, sent into Iraq two days prior. And they were in suicide bombings or attacked in Humvees. And it's like, you just try to hold yourself together."
As impressed as Simpson was with the soldiers she met, calling them "the most spectacular people," she was taken aback by some of the servicemens' reactions to her.
"Well, it had been a while since they'd seen ... a girl in some tight jeans," she said. "They just made ... comments. I can't even say what they said because ... they were ... very forward."
Purple Ranger 14 - July 7, 2005 06:58 PM (GMT)
Simpson better get ready for more of such "comments." In the photo spread, she wears American-flag bikinis with unzipped camouflage pants, climbs ropes in camouflage undies, and crawls on all fours in combat boots.
"But that's why I'm there!" she said. "To bring smiles, even if I have to show a little cleavage."
Jessica appears on page 48 of Stuff Magazine, 20 times inside In Touch Weekly, 11 times in Star and 8 times in Life & Style.
Ashlee appears 8 times inside In Touch Weekly and once in Life & Style.

Simpson Prefers 'Nasty' Aguilera's Voice, Spears As A Person
Ireland On-Line reports that Jessica Simpson commented on pop rivals Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. 'The Dukes of Hazzard' actress, who beat out Britney for the Daisy Duke role, said, "She has a really cute butt and she would have been cute in the role. But I'm glad I got it. Vocally (I prefer) Christina; as a person, Britney. Christina has that edge. She's the nasty girl, but she is extremely talented."

And while Jessica has embraced Hollywood, Nick yearns for his Midwest stomping grounds. Now, Nick's family is concerned about the growing divide between the couple.

Ashlee Simpson Confronted Avril Lavigne For Offending Accusations

Pop singer Ashlee Simpson confessed she was very furious when she heard Avril Lavigne's comments about her doing playback on US TV show Saturday Night Live.

Pop singer Ashlee Simpson confessed she was very furious when she heard Avril Lavigne's comments about her doing playback on US TV show Saturday Night Live. Simpson revealed she confronted Lavigne at a party, asking why did she say that she's not deserving to be on the SNL stage if she relied on backing tapes.
Simpson says: "I won't say anything bad about anyone, even if they talk about me.
"I hung out with Avril once and I said to her: 'Hey, I heard that you said some things,' and she was like: 'Sorry,' and that was cool. I'm not in high school and I don't need drama."
Ashlee Nicole Simpson, born October 3, 1984 in Dallas, Texas, is an American singer, actress and the younger sister of singer Jessica Simpson. She rose to prominence in mid-2004, when her first album, the now triple platinum Autobiography, debuted at number one in sales, accompanied by a successful reality show, The Ashlee Simpson Show.
In October 2004, she was accused of lip syncing when she was caught using a pre-recorded vocal track on the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. Simpson claimed she needed the track due to illness.
This highly publicized incident drew substantial negative attention from the press. In early 2005 she embarked on a successful two-month North American tour, and she is currently working on her second album.

Ashlee Simpson wants Lindsay Lohan's man?
By Editor
Ashlee Simpson vs Lindsay Lohan
Pop Star Ashlee Simpson is reportedly burning up the telephone lines in an effort to win over Lindsay Lohan's current squeeze, Millionaire TV Producer Mitch Mortaza. An exclusive source via an insider tells thebosh that Ashlee has been calling Mitch on several occasions to try and get together "she is trying to prove that she can have Lindsay's man" the source says. However, apparently Lindsay Lohan has a strong hold on Mitch and he has not been returning Ashlee's calls. Last week at the swank Cabana Club in LA, Millionaire TV Producer Mitch Mortaza reportedly flirted with Ashlee Simpson for 30 minutes in a private bungalow.
REVIEW: Jessica Simpson's "Boots Are Made For Walkin" in Dukes of Hazzard, plus APSCI, Young Jeezy and Bratz
Marian Liu, 03:45 PM in Marian Liu, Music
Here are some quick reviews of other albums that have just come out. Feel free to elaborate:
“The Dukes of Hazzard” soundtrack **1/2
Jessica Simpson sasses up the remake of “These Boots Are Made For Walkin' with new lyrics and a new sound. She flips the more feminist lyrics for flirty ones and adds an almost hip-hop track with a clapping background (think Lumidee's "Never Leave You (Uh Oooh, Uh Oooh)."
But following the very sultry (and some feel very scandalous) single, the album is pretty standard, filled with new and some classic songs by Willie Nelson, The Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd. It's fun driving music, but I'm still waiting to see the movie (opening Aug. 5) to make my final decision

Has Jessica had plastic surgery?
With The Dukes of Hazzard hitting theaters on August 5, all eyes are on Jessica Simpson's perfect body. Did she fill Daisy's short-shorts through diet and exercise alone, or did she give in to the pressures of her first major movie role and go under the knife?
Although the former Newlyweds star admits she struggles with her body image - “You're never going to look perfect to yourself. I used to hate the bump in my nose, but now I think it has character.” - she denies seeking the assistance of a plastic surgeon, “I'm all natural,” she tells In Touch. Instead, she says her sculpted body is the result of intense workouts. “No girl in her right mind would feel comfortable wearing a bikini on a movie screen without wanting her body to look as toned and lean as possible,” she says.
Pick up the new issue of In Touch to find out what her husband Nick Lachey - and plastic surgeons - think of her new body.

Simpson's only a siren on screen
Sunday, July 31, 2005
By JOYCE J. PERSICO
Staff Writer
The body of Jessica Simpson's screen work is barely clothed in 10-inch long "daisy dukes" and a bikini that would fit into a shot glass.
Yes, it's that kind of screen debut for the pop singer whose personal life, including her marriage to singer Nick Lachey, has been fodder for the tabloids throughout the past year.
Thanks to a scorching "These Boots Are Made for Walkin' " video of Simpson washing a car while wearing a skimpy bikini, there's a certain amount of anticipation regarding her film debut in "The Dukes of Hazzard," which opens nationwide Aug. 5. In it, Simpson plays the role of the short-shorts-wearing cousin Daisy Duke created by Catherine Bach in the 1979-85 television show.
"There are a lot of lines I won't cross," Simpson insists. "I did have fun playing off the sex appeal of Daisy Duke. She definitely knew how to use her body.
"But that was just me playing a role. As Jessica Simpson, I would never do that. I would never even walk across a beach in a bikini."
Simpson says this while dressed in a figure-hugging, square-necked Dolce & Gabbana sheath of pale pink with blood-red flowers and bright green tendrils print. With her generous head of blond hair pulled back in a bun, she is stunning - and stunningly petite at only 5 feet 3 inches. In the crowded lobby of a New York hotel, she turns the heads of even the most serious-looking businessmen.

There is little hint of the awkward bride who asked her husband if Chicken of the Sea tuna was chicken on their MTV TV reality series "Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica." She was a truly blushing bride when she married the former 98° singer in October 2002. What she says now of their marriage is that he "allowed (her) to grow up." What she says she learned from him is that "you can't change a man."
"I just do what I do," she says of her complicated relationship with the press. "I go where people tell me to go. I don't think that much about it. A lot of people are trying to bring you down, but I can't complain about people trying to write about me."
And she has no regrets about exposing her fledgling marriage to television cameras.
"Opening my marriage and my privacy to television - that's what made me a success," she reasons. "I absolutely do not regret that.
"But now it's time to make things more private and sacred from here on out. I've got decisions to make in my career. This has been brewing a long time."
She is a preacher's daughter whose father now serves as her omnipresent business manager. Born in Abilene, Texas, 25 years ago, Simpson got her start singing Christian music and parlayed her talent into a singing career.
By 1999, she made her album debut and now is working on a new one. In between, there have been a generous handful of recordings, with her husband and without.

While Simpson was filming "Dukes" in Louisiana, reported rifts in her marriage to Lachey surfaced along with Simpson's reported dalliance with married co-star Johnny Knoxville. Both Simpson and Knoxville deny any involvement, with Simpson adding, "Our true fans know Nick and I are madly in love and nothing's going to rock it."
But "The Dukes of Hazzard" producer Bill Gerber had no problem with the blizzard of publicity that surrounded Simpson on the set.
"It was good for awareness of the film," Gerber explained, pointing out that Simpson "won us over" despite auditions by contenders like pop singer Britney Spears. "We were all very enthusiastic about Jessica."
He's since cast her as the lead in "Major Movie Star," a film in which Simpson will be playing an actress who hits rock bottom and then enlists in the Marine Corps Reserves.
"Dukes" director Jay Chandrasekhar wasn't quite so sure the pop singer could make it as a movie star.
"Jessica just wanted to see if she could hang out in the same scene as Willie Nelson (a co-star) as an established actress.
"When I shot her screen test she was small and quiet and I said, `You're going to have to smile in this. By the fifth take she was better. By the sixth take, she was even better.
"She was totally game. She's a good girl going bad and she's being just a little more daring with her sexuality."
The Daisy Duke role is a surprisingly small one considering the publicity Simpson has generated. Chandrasekhar says it was a good move.
Purple Ranger 14 - August 1, 2005 03:19 PM (GMT)
"It was smart of her to take a small role where she didn't have to carry the film," says the director. "Some pop stars try to carry the whole movie."
"I wanted to do a movie and this was perfect timing for me," Simpson explains. "I played up the Southern, sexy part. I thought it would be great to show strength. People have seen my ditsy side and fun and dorky side."
Finding a pair of shorts that would look good within the limits of a PG-13 rating required the performer to try on 100 pair and hire a workout trainer. She dropped pounds - reportedly to her husband's dismay - and slipped into the 10-inch long pair, posing for photos while bending over.
"Girls and guys had to like them," she says.
An admirer of Dolly Parton and Goldie Hawn, Simpson says she's taking more control over her life and would some day like to have kids - just not now.
"It's all a process and I'm trying to balance everything. I'm a workaholic and I put my hands in everything.
"Usually, I'm with my family every day. My dad's my manager and my mom would dress me. But for three months, while I was making this film, I was with all my girlfriends and we just had fun. It was like `Sex and the City' without the sex - except for the month-and-a-half my husband was there."
Surprisingly, one of the things that's given Simpson more strength of purpose is the workout regime that reshaped her body.
"I worked out so hard and it gives you so much more confidence," Simpson adds. "It's something I did for myself."

Co-star Knoxville sees the strength in Simpson that so many of her fans have not.
"She was so point-on during filming," says Knoxville. "After the first take, you never would have known it was her first. Most would have wilted under the pressure."
Bombshell
Jessica Simpson on the hazards of sex appeal
By BRUCE KIRKLAND, SUN MEDIA
NEW YORK -- Jessica Simpson, no longer a fresh newlywed but still in the prime of her physical charms and at the peak of celebrity, bounces into a Manhattan hotel room.
Men's jaws drop, women either grin or grimace: Simpson is that absurdly noticeable, that damned striking.
Simpson, 25, is wearing a scoop-necked, satin sun dress decorated with magenta flowers and green leaves. The perky little designer number looks one size too small, as if it were painted on, emphasizing every nuance of her petite yet curvaceous body. The overflowing bodice reminds one of two overgrown exotic fish trying to leap out of a small fishbowl.
The issue of sex appeal is put on the table immediately. After all, Simpson is making her movie debut as Daisy Duke in the big-screen version of the good ol' boys TV series, The Dukes of Hazzard (1979-85). And Daisy - strutting through the Hazzard County redneck bar in her shortie shorts and surrounded by slack-jawed yokels who like fast cars and faster women - is all about the tease.
Purple Ranger 14 - August 1, 2005 03:21 PM (GMT)
"Whoa!" Simpson says with a smile when the question about Daisy's sex appeal is thrown at her by Sun Media.
"Really?"
This initial response makes you shudder. You wonder if the girl is just an empty vessel, a pretty thing with no brain who cannot complete a sentence. Wrong. Turns out she can think, can play the media game and can talk in whole paragraphs when the occasion demands it. She will not win any awards from most-modern feminists and it is a stretch to imagine her spouting chaos theory or indulging in quantum physics despite an IQ that reportedly ranges into the Mensa-level 160s. But she holds her own on music, her new movie career and the pressures of celebrity as the femme side of the MTV series, Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica.
"She definitely knows how to make a man melt," Simpson finally says of Daisy, whose primary goal in The Dukes of Hazzard is to get her cousins Luke Duke and Bo Duke - played by Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott - out of trouble by manipulating other men with her wily charms.
On the TV series, Catherine Bach did her thing, usually in cheek-hugging shorts that eventually bore her character's name. In director Jay Chandrasekhar's movie, opening Friday, Simpson's Daisy does that by shaking a head of blond hair and wriggling about in either the shorts or a pink bikini that recalls the red one Bach wore in the first episode of the TV show.
"I went straight to the gym," Simpson says of her preparation, once she beat out the likes of fellow singer Britney Spears for the role. "I had to look good in the bikini."

Simpson knew what she was getting into. She watched the re-runs of the TV show and she vigorously campaigned to land the part as her big-screen debut.
"I always looked up to Daisy," says Simpson, "and I always thought she was an amazing, strong, smart woman and, when I found out they were making the movie, it was a dream role for me because I thought, 'What a great transition in my career now - starting an acting career.' I want people to know that I'm a strong woman, so I went out and I went after this role as hard I could - and I got it."
Yet Abilene, Texas-born Simpson is the daughter of a Texas Baptist preacher man, Joe Simpson. As much power as she has to melt men herself, Simpson says she does not flaunt it (and made virginity famous by keeping hers until her October 26, 2002, wedding night to fellow pop star Nick Lachey).
"I'm definitely shy," she says. "I don't even walk around in my bathing suit at the beach. So I was definitely acting for me to drop the coat (in a tease-seduction scene with Michael Weston as Deputy Enos) and be in a bikini to try to get my cousins out of trouble by using my body. That was acting."
In one scene, working opposite Joe Don Baker as the shady governor of Georgia, Simpson is left speechless when he flubs the take and confesses he cannot remember his lines because he's looking at her "titties" close up. "That was pretty shocking!" Simpson says. Yet she allowed Chandrasekhar to include the outtake as a bonus clip with the end credits. "I mean, I had to approve it. Jay called me up and said, 'Hey, can I put this in there?' (I said), 'Yeah, I don't care.' "

The funny-odd thing about Simpson's effect on men is that, like many bombshells, Simpson did not have supreme confidence in her body. Prior to shooting The Dukes of Hazzard, she figured her butt was too small and too soft to play Daisy.
"When I found out I got the role, I went straight to the gym and I hired a trainer, a trainer who is one of my dear friends from high school. And he came out to Baton Rouge (the Louisiana city where much of rural George was recreated for the movie) and I trained six days a week for two hours a day - a lot of training. Heavy cardio. And I didn't have a butt so I had to do lots of squats. I had to do Daisy Duke proud! My butt jiggled. I wanted it to be firm!"
Her Newlyweds husband Nick Lachey - they are still together despite the incessant rumours that inevitably accompany a relationship developed on a reality television freakshow - showed up in Baton Rouge for six weeks, too.
On that topic, marriage and the legacy of Newlyweds, Simpson says she has no issues.
"Yeah, there's no regrets," she says. "I do NOT regret that and people have accepted me as a person and a lot of my fame has come from just who I am (as a singer). I wouldn't take it back and I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you guys if it wouldn't have happened."
While already a singer, her celebrity emerged directly from the Newlyweds phenomenon, which has been replenished with follow-ups shows such as Nick & Jessica's Family Christmas and Nick & Jessica On Tour. In music, Simpson already has several albums out, including Sweet Kisses and In This Skin. Another album, tentatively and unwisely entitled And the Band Played On, is due in November.

"My album is definitely different from the last Jessica Simpson records," she says. "This is the first one I've gotten to executive produce because I've basically said, 'I don't have to make a record. I want to do it because I want to make the kind of music I want to make and you've got to give me the reins!' So they did. It's all just great music, everything from swing to country to Patsy Cline stuff. It's something that I'm really, really proud of. It's all stuff that me and my girls will go out and dance to. It's all over the place."
With music becoming a secondary consideration, Simpson is focusing on a movie career.
"Yes," she says about whetting her appetite on The Dukes of Hazzard, "I was shocked at how relaxing shooting a movie was. It was so fun and, on the set, everybody was so carefree and so many relationships and friendships were created. And, when we left, it was like leaving summer camp.
"I was so sad when we left Baton Rouge, so I definitely want to get into doing more movies. And I'm more into the romantic comedies and comedies. I'm not really into the deep drama roles. I'm getting some really, really great scripts and I think my next project will be with the producer of The Dukes of Hazzard, Bill Gerber, and it's called Major Movie Star and it's kind of like, not a re-make, but a lot like Private Benjamin."
Not surprisingly, Gerber has kind words for Simpson. He loves her sex appeal but says he cast her as Daisy because of other qualities, too.
Purple Ranger 14 - August 1, 2005 03:24 PM (GMT)
"She understands that part of Daisy Duke's appeal is that she is very sexy but not slutty. And that was kind of one of the things that made me want to hire Jessica. She's really decent but super-sexy and that's an important quality for Daisy."
And for Simpson's future acting career? No actress can prosper just on sex appeal, Gerber says.
"Clearly not. It backfires on you if you just play the sex card the whole time. But I don't think she ever would. I think she genuinely does the work to be an actress and she's a decent Christian girl. That's who she is and, when she talks about her love life in People, she really stands for those (values) despite what people say in the press. Her dad is a preacher. She believes in that wholeheartedly. I just don't see her going the easy route of just going for the sex."

Jessica Simpson Mixes Country Flavor With Club Tracks On Upcoming LP

"The Dukes of Hazzard" has done more than launch Jessica Simpson's movie career - it's also given her a sense of direction for her upcoming album, which she promises will have a country-fried flavor.
"Living in the South for three months again felt really good," Simpson said of shooting the film in Louisiana. "It brought a lot of my personality back that I was missing. I retreated back to Patsy Cline, and tried to go back there a little bit."
Simpson had threatened to go country as early as this past December, when she also contemplated adding some jazz overtones to the album (see "Jessica Simpson Planning Workout Video, Listening To Bjork For Inspiration"). But Simpson's redirection mostly comes thanks to her collaboration with Willie Nelson on the "Dukes" soundtrack single "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," which she said was so much fun that she hopes to work with Willie again (see "Jessica Simpson To Record Duet With Willie Nelson"). "We've been talking about it, Willie and I," Simpson said. "We have some songs put away for each other, but I don't know what we're going to end up doing. We'll see."
Purple Ranger 14 - August 2, 2005 06:46 PM (GMT)
What she does know is that her LP, titled And the Band Played On, is due out in November. "I have two more songs to record," she revealed, adding that the album marks her first as executive producer. She compares the LP's sound with "Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline, Stevie Nicks - it's all over the place. But then there's songs for us girls to dance to in the club," she explained. Simpson has worked with knob-twiddlers Corey Rooney, Scott Storch and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on the disc, with the latter pair of producers collaborating on "about six songs" total.
One of Storch's tracks, the dance-club burner "Fire It Up" - he calls it Jessica's "Dirtty" - is a contender to be the LP's first single. Simpson also recorded another club track, "Mr. Operator," with Storch during their session together three weeks ago.
"You'll hear [the country], but you'll also hear the fun club songs. Club songs and country songs; it's all of it, mixed into one," Simpson said. "Just really good music."

SIMPSON URGES SPEARS TO QUIT REALITY
JESSICA SIMPSON has urged BRITNEY SPEARS and KEVIN FEDERLINE to abandon their reality show after the first series, before it ruins their lives.
Simpson and her husband NICK LACHEY were tied to making three seasons of their show NEWLYWEDS: NICK AND JESSICA and she regrets signing two years of their lives away.
She tells the singer, and star of BRITNEY AND KEVIN: CHAOTIC, "Only do one season and make sure your contract is good.
"We were locked in. We thought it was going to be a six-episode documentary about being a newlywed. It ended up being two years."
A down-home debut, y'all
HOLLYWOOD - Hollywood Boulevard got a hillbilly makeover Thursday night outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre, where the General Lee - that famous 1969 orange Dodge Charger - honked Dixie ("wish-I-was-in-the-land-of-cot-ton") to herald the arrivals of Bo (Seann William Scott), Luke (Johnny Knoxville) and Daisy Duke (Jessica Simpson).
She's a major movie star: Jessica Simpson and husband Nick Lachey arrive at the Los Angeles premiere of The Dukes of Hazzard.
Following the premiere screening of The Dukes of Hazzard (in theaters Friday), guests walked to the Hazzard County Fair, which was actually a redressed parking lot with a whole lotta hay, rifle shootin' and moonshine.
Purple Ranger 14 - August 2, 2005 06:48 PM (GMT)
Simpson and hubby Nick Lachey walked the red carpet hand-in-hand, with Nick constantly petting her exposed back. She probably could have fit into the tight Narciso Rodriguez periwinkle dress before her rigorous physical training for Dukes, said the super-fit star, "but I wouldn't have felt as confident as I do tonight."
Lachey said he spent nearly a month with his wife on the Dukes set in Baton Rouge, where his wife took him to some "good old karaoke bars," though neither attempted karaoke themselves.
The couple brought along their siblings, Ashlee Simpson and Drew Lachey, who is now managing Nick's career. Drew said Nick's next album and solo MTV reality series will both premiere "right around Valentine's Day."
As for Jessica's next movie move, Dukes producer Bill Gerber said he has cast Simpson in his next film, Major Movie Star, set to shoot this fall, "about an actress who hits rock bottom and ends up in the military reserves."
Knoxville attended looking very much like the film's heavy, Boss Hogg (Burt Reynolds). Knoxville was wearing a white Ralph Lauren suit with black tie and handkerchief. He credited his early years on MTV's Jackass for providing him with plenty of training for the film's over-the-top car chases. "I had four or five cop cars pull guns on me like four times, and sometimes we got arrested," he recalled.
Reclaiming his "Jackass" title, Knoxville straddled the mechanical bull at the after-party, not once, but three times - always lasting less than five seconds before hitting the mat.
After seeing the film, TV's original Bo Duke, actor John Schneider - who in last Monday's USA TODAY blasted this remake of his 1979-85 series - took Scott aside for some major crow eating.
