Discuss the No Doubt lead singer who has gone solo.

Gwen Stefani Single Ousts 50 Cent from No. 1

With a leap from No. 3 to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100, Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" ends the nine-week reign of 50 Cent's "Candy Shop" featuring Olivia, which slips to No. 3.
"Hollaback" is the latest single from the No Doubt singer's solo debut, "Love, Angel, Music, Baby" (Interscope), which has sold nearly 1.8 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
The album is No. 6 on the Billboard 200 in its 22nd week on the chart. The Game's "Hate It or Love It" featuring 50 Cent remains at No. 2 on the Hot 100 for a fourth week, while Akon's "Lonely" spends a third at No. 4.
Ciara has her eyes on a second Hot 100 chart-topper with "Oh" featuring Ludacris, which jumps from No. 8 to No. 5. The R&B newcomer first went to No. 1 in September 2004 with "Goodies" featuring Petey Pablo.
As Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" dips 5-6, her latest single, "Behind These Hazel Eyes," continues its rapid ascent on the chart, making a 65-46 move this week.

Stefani recalls horror meeting with Sting
Gwen Stefani has never forgotten her first nightmare meeting with her hero Sting because he was every bit the arrogant rock star.
The singer admits she was a "fat and puberty-stricken" teenager when she confronted the star after a show in her native Orange County, and the singer was far from kind.
But Stefani has since got her own back by reminding Sting of his bad behaviour. She says: "My dad was like: 'Ask him for his autograph,' so I did, and Sting was really mean.

"But I loved him. When I met Sting years later, I told him that story, and he was like: 'Oh man, I was such a dick back then.' But he's such a great guy."

Gwen Stefani dismantles the Candy Shop
No Doubt lead singer Gwen Stefani (did you know that she once dated the group's bassist Tony Kanal?) has raided the Candy Shop. With a vengeance, Stefani's new single Hollaback Girl dismantled Candy Shop by rapper 50 Cent and Olivia from the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Candy Shop camped out in the top spot for nine weeks.
Gwen Stefani

Interestingly, Hollaback Girl is the third single from Stefani's solo debut album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. And it has become her first solo number one hit. This brings us back to a similar situation which occurred 13 years ago. One time Miss America turned singer Vanessa Williams earned her first number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1992 with Save the Best for Last, the third single off her Comfort Zone album.

Another interesting chart trivia is that Stefani is the fourth solo female artiste to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the last three years. The others were Fantasia, Ashanti and Kelly Clarkson.

GWEN STEFANI has created a new T-shirt to raise cash for the victims of last year's (04) Indian Ocean tsunami.

The NO DOUBT frontwoman has put the fashion item together via her LAMB line.

The top reads "What Color Is Love?" - inspired by her song LONG WAY TO GO, about interracial relationships - and is available exclusively via MARIE CLAIRE magazine.

All proceeds will go to the relief group DUANG PRATEEP FOUNDATION, reports MTV NEWS.

Sexy Stefani models the shirt on the June (05) cover and says that the phrase on the shirt is a good message for the world. She explains, "The colours on the shirt are like a rainbow, and at the end of the rainbow, there's always sunshine."

GWEN STILL ON TOP

GWEN STEFANI's HOLLABACK GIRL has held on to America's number one spot for a third successive week.

The hit track holds off rising tunes by CIARA (OH) and MARIAH CAREY (WE BELONG TOGETHER) to stay at number one on the BILLBOARD Hot 100 list.

Meanwhile, the BACKSTREET BOYS' comeback is complete - their first single for five years, INCOMPLETE, is the fastest-growing digital track on the new Hot 100 chart, jumping from 35 to 18. The first release from the group in five years is also swiftly moving up the Hot Digital Songs tally, where it jumps 23 to 10.

Gwen Stefani Plans Another Solo Album By Year's End

No Doubt singer heading back into studio with Pharrell Williams.
by Jennifer Vineyard, with additional reporting by Jasmine Dotiwala

It seems the "Hollaback Girl" is getting ready to do just that - six months after its release, Gwen Stefani's planning a sequel to her solo album, Love, Angel, Music, Baby. She hopes to have it out by the holidays and thinks that deadline is doable since she has so many leftovers from her original recording sessions.
"Me and Pharrell are going in the studio again, and we just started talking about doing a whole 'nother album with the tracks that never made it on this record and maybe writing a few more," she said. "It's going to be kind of like 'part two.' "
After her initial sessions with Pharrell Williams, who produced "Hollaback Girl" (see "Gwen Stefani Answers No Doubt Fans With 'Attitude Song' "), Stefani realized that she overshot her mark. "The next day, I was like, 'Now I have to put out two records, I got too many tracks,' " she said. "There was a moment where I almost did, but it didn't work out."
Much like before, now her dilemma is trying to decide which tracks to pick. There's the first song she wrote with Linda Perry, "Fine by You." "It's cute, but not what I was looking for," Gwen said. "But it always feels good to write a song." There's also "Wonderful Life for Him," featuring Depeche Mode's Martin Gore on guitar, which was one of the last songs Stefani wrote with Perry and freaked the singer out so much she had to flee from the session (see "Gwen Stefani Turns To Bandmate For Aid After Freak-Out"). "It's a great track," Stefani said. "I wanted to write this deep song for a friend who had passed away, but I came in the next day and [Perry] had already written lyrics."
Stefani also has plenty of tracks she's already written with other producers, such as "Parental Advisory" with Rich Harrison and "You Started It" with Pharrell. Of the latter she said, "It has these great chords, and to me, it doesn't sound anything like the Neptunes. It sounds like an early, early No Doubt song. "There are a lot of songs to choose from," she laughed. "It's really hard to choose, just because I want everyone to hear all the songs."

STEFANI STAYS ON TOP
GWEN STEFANI has topped the US singles chart for a second week with her new hit HOLLABACK GIRL.

The solo NO DOUBT star held off challenges from THE GAME (HATE IT LOVE IT) and CIARA (OH) to stay on top of the BILLBOARD Hot 100 list.

Meanwhile, rapper 50 CENT continues a terrific year on the chart by crashing into the top 10 with new single JUST A LIL' BIT at number five.

Gwen Stefani Plans New Album
(Soundbuzz, Thursday May 19)
Gwen Stefani is so motivated after the success of her debut solo album; she plans to release a follow-up before the end of the year. The singer has some tracks left over from 'Love Angle Music Baby' and is convinced she can have another disc in the shops within six months - with a little help from pal Pharrell Williams. She tells MTV News, "Me and Pharrell are going in the studio again, and we just started talking about doing a whole 'nother album with the tracks that never made it on this record and maybe writing a few more. "It's going to be kind of like part two." (wenn)

And while she fed and entertained the estimated 2,000 people who showed up, Mayor Jef Vander Borght paid her a special visit to present her with a giant key, telling her, "Thank you so much for all you do for film and television." Gwen Stefani and Eve performed at the outdoor show.

According to the midweeks, Love Angel Music Baby looks set to climb into the UK Top 5 - the first time it'll have made that high
The album got off to a slow start at Christmas, entering at #14 and diving down the chart pretty quickly, but since Rich Girl's promo started, it's been hanging around the upper reaches of the charts for weeks. The album has currently sold well over 400,000 copies and has reached Platinum sales.
And this week it is midweek #5, after nearly half a year on sale

I was like: 'I know, I'm gonna get some Harajaku girls and I'm gonna roll with them everywhere I go!'"

Gwen To Holla Back On Gavin Rossdale's Muscular New LP

Helmet's Page Hamilton, hardcore vets contributing to new band Institute.

by Chris Harris, with additional reporting by SuChin Pak

Gavin Rossdale (file) (Getty Images/Frazer Harrison)
Gavin Rossdale's been out of the rock-and-roll game going on four years now. The former frontman for British post-Nirvana modern-rockers Bush said his band's been in something of a holding pattern since guitarist Nigel Pulsford's revelation -not long after the release of 2001's Golden State - that his passport had been stamped for the last time, and he'd be touring no more.
So Rossdale decided that if he were to return to rock's front lines, he'd have to do so in drastic style. Forget about going the tender route of the softhearted solo troubadour - in the words of brusque celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, it was time to turn it up a notch.
"I didn't want to do a softer record than Bush, because I thought that would be maybe more expected," Rossdale said. "I thought what would be cooler would be to do something a little bit heavier, a little stronger. I wanted to make a more forceful record."
To that end, Rossdale recruited Helmet mastermind Page Hamilton to produce his first post-Bush project, and assembled a band called Institute, made up of a veritable who's who of hardcore: former Helmet/ Orange 9mm guitarist Chris Traynor; bassist Cache "Utah Slim" Tolman, formerly of Civ, Rival Schools and exploratory jazz metalloids Iceburn; and drummer Charlie Walker (Chamberlain, Split Lip).
"What I wanted to do with this record was make it very spacious and very muscular," Rossdale said. "Sometimes there's as much music in the space as there is in the sound. So a stripped-down kind of record was the intention. With Page producing it, I couldn't help but have that aesthetic being in my head - of that kind of hardcore genre, of the Helmet thing. It was right in there. This, for me, is such a natural process, creating these large rocks songs. It's kind of second nature."

Purple Ranger 14 - June 4, 2005 08:56 PM (GMT)
Institute's tentatively self-titled album - slated for an early fall release with the first single, "Bulletproof Skin," expected at radio later this summer - is a departure from Rossdale's work with Bush. One of the disc's cuts will feature guest vocals from wife Gwen Stefani, with producer Daniel Lanois singing with Rossdale on several others.
Rossdale said the band will soon shoot a video with "XXX" director Rob Cohen, whom he met when he contributed a solo track, "Adrenaline," to that film's soundtrack a few years back. Also, "Bulletproof Skin" appears on the soundtrack to Cohen's forthcoming Jessica Biel flick, "Stealth," about a fighter jet piloted by a computer that develops a mind of its own, threatening all of human existence.
For Rossdale, much of the material on Institute's debut - songs like "Boombox," "Animals Attack" and perhaps even more specifically, "Ambulances" - revolves around the theme of self-preservation.
"This idea that people ... you're always trying to find hope, improvement, salvation of some kind. It's a large idea of how to survive. It's a common feeling of sometimes you can be low, and you find your way through with the power of going right into that, headfirst into those feelings, and then you come out. ... I never want to make depressing music, morose music. I like it to be hopeful and uplifting. But you can't do that the whole way. There has to be some sort of a ramp-up to that."
More than anything, Rossdale said, he's anxious to be back on the road again - something he's missed these last few years, which saw him dabbling in acting, appearing in "Constantine" and the forthcoming "The Game of Their Lives." "It's a real bad cliché, but I feel best when I'm onstage," he said.
Still, he can't help but worry about how the new band will be received.
"I'm really excited, but I'm a little bit nervous," he said. "I think those nerves come no matter what, because you're kind of putting your head right out the window for people to either throw eggs at or wave at and say nice things. So you don't really know how it's going to go. But that's another affirmation of being alive and doing something ... I had fun working on those films, but music is my love. So to get back to that, to get back on tour, it's really exciting for me."

GIRLS ON TOP OF THE CHARTS AGAIN

MARIAH CAREY and GWEN STEFANI have notched up two months at the top of the US singles charts.

Carey's WE BELONG TOGETHER, which ended Stefani's reign at the top of the BILLBOARD charts last month (MAY05), has now made it four weeks in a row at number one, with the NO DOUBT singer's HOLLABACK GIRL refusing to budge at number two.

The girls are holding off a challenge from BLACK EYED PEAS' DON'T PHUNK WITH MY HEART, which has jumped from number five to three.

Meanwhile, on the Billboard Adult Contemporary airplay list, KELLY CLARKSON's BREAKWAY scored a 16th week at number one.

Hollaback Hit For Gwen Stefani
Gwen Stefani's 'Hollaback Girl' becomes third UK smash hit from Love Angel Music Baby album.

By Leo Havemann, 31/05/2005.

The fact that no-one is quite sure what a 'Hollaback Girl' is has not harmed Gwen Stefani's chart power this week as her new single thunders its way into the UK Singles Chart at number 8, becoming her third consecutive top 10 hit from her album Love Angel Music Baby.

Sounding like the bastard child of Queen's 'We Will Rock You' and Kelis's 'Milkshake', the track recently held the number 1 position on the US Billboard chart for two weeks before being deposed by comeback queen Mariah Carey's 'We Belong Together'.

Meanwhile in the UK No Doubt vocalist-turned-solo star has not quite matched the performance of her previous singles 'What You Waiting For' and 'Rich Girl', which both reached number 4. 'Hollaback Girl' has, however, helped her LAMB album notch up another week on the UK Album Chart's Top 10, its 27th week on the chart overall.

Stefani first hit the UK airwaves in 1996 with No Doubt, proclaiming to be 'Just A Girl', and reached number 1 in 1997 with 'Don't Speak'. Including singles with No Doubt, 'Hollaback Girl' is Stefani's sixth top 10 hit.

Music artist Gwen Stefani has signed on to deliver her first wireless ringtone through Cingular Wireless. The carrier and the singer also worked to develop a Video Postcard for her fans.

Stefani's ringtones will be made available through Cingular's Cingular Sounds offering. The deal involves four exclusive ringtones that will only be available to Cingular customers, including "Hollaback Girl (I Ain't No)," "Rich Girl (Hook)," "Hollaback Girl (Bananas)" and "What Are You Waiting For (Hook)."

In addition to the ringtones, Stefani and Cingular developed a Video Postcard of "Hollaback Girl" that can be seen on Cingular's Website. Customers also can forward the postcard to a friend's e-mail address. The postcard, however, is not available for download to the handset.

Cingular debuted its Cingular Sounds service in April with the introduction of Coldplay's new single "Speed of Sound."

Cingular Sounds ringtones are available for download at $2.49 each.

Gwen Stefani's Song About Tony Kanal To Be Her Next Single
'Cool' sprung out of Dallas Austin's take on No Doubt's 'Simple Kind of Life.'
by Jennifer Vineyard
Gwen Stefani (file) (Lorenxo Agius)
Gwen Stefani got so hot with "Hollaback Girl" that she wants to "Cool" it now - with her next single and video. She just shot the video last week with director Sophie Muller, which is fitting, since Muller also directed the video for the song that "Cool" is based on.
When Stefani originally teamed up with Dallas Austin, one of her producers for Love, Angel, Music, Baby, Austin told her about a song he was trying to write that would be his version of No Doubt's "Simple Kind of Life." "He said he loved that song, and when he heard it, he wrote this other song, but he never finished it," Stefani said. "He asked, 'Maybe you can help me finish this track?' Because he never could make 'Cool' sound cool."
So he played it for her, and instantly, Stefani said, she had the "craziest feeling," like, "Wow, this is my song." Within the next 15 minutes, the lyrics just poured out. "When he told me about the track and where it came from for him, it just triggered something in me."
Stefani related to Austin's struggle to describe his relationship with a girlfriend that had evolved into being not "just friends" but the best of friends, thanks to her much-chronicled relationship with No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal. In "Cool," she sings, "It's such a miracle that you and me are still good friends/ After all that we've been through, I know we're cool." While the video doesn't co-star Kanal, it does depict Gwen in a relationship that changes over time - as the couple become lovers, then exes and finally, friends. The clip is tragic yet elegant and scenic, thanks to its locale - just outside Milan, Italy.
"I was never intending to go personal on this record," Stefani said. "This was a get-up-on-the-dance-floor kind of album, you know? But no matter what you do, things just come out. It just ended this whole thing for me in my head, and it puts an end to a chapter in a really nice way."

Stefani 'Cool' with ex
Gwen Stefani is set to release a new single about her stormy relationship with an ex - despite promising not to get personal on the album. The sexy blonde's upcoming track 'Cool' chronicles her troubled seven-year romance with No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal. The video for the track - which is from the album 'L.A.M.B' (Love Angel Music Baby) - shows the star in a relationship that changes over time as the pair become lovers, then exes and finally friends.

It echoes the star's real life struggle to become friends with Kanal after their messy split. The 35-year-old 'Hollaback Girl' singer confessed she tried to keep her emotions out of the album, but couldn't. She admitted: "I never intended to get personal. But no matter what you do, things just come out. But in a way it puts an end to a chapter in a really nice way."

This isn't the first time Kanal has been the inspiration for Stefani's songs. Many of the tracks from No Doubt's breakthrough album 'Tragic Kingdom' were inspired by their relationship, including the massive hit song, 'Don't Speak'.

Love. Angel. Music. Baby. Tour
After releasing her debut solo album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby., and after having it achieve double-platinum status, and after having taken up residence on MTV's TRL, Gwen Stefani is now planning a road trip.
Dubbed the Harajuku Lovers tour, Stefani will kicks things off October 16 and keeps going through November 10, just before an expected release of the follow-up to Love. Angel. Music. Baby.
The arena tour starts in Phoenix on October 16, then spends so time in California. Stefani will play in West Valley City, Utah, on October 25. From there, the tour heads east for shows in Colorado, Illinois, and Michigan, finishing out the month with a show at Boston's Fleet Center on Halloween.
November starts with a concert at NYC's Madison Square. After a show in Atlantic City, N.J., on November 3, the tour turns south for shows in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. The shebang wraps up in Houston on November 10.
All dates (with the exception of November 3) will include Black Eyed Peas, who released their latest album, Monkey Business, on June 7.
The tour itself is named after Gwen Stefani's new clothing line, which is due to be unveiled this summer. Love. Angel. Music. Baby. has sold more than five million copies worldwide, while the single "Hollaback Girl" reached No. 1 the singles charts - proving there is life for Stefani outside of No Doubt.
Although she isn't separated from her band - her next single, "Cool," is reportedly loosely based on her past relationship to No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal.
Also expect to hear Stefani on her husband Gavin Rossdale's upcoming solo album, for which she recorded some vocals. His disc is due out this fall.

Gwen Stefani mentioned-R&B maestros Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis honored in L.A.
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - R&B songwriters and producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the duo behind hit tunes for the likes of Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men, were thrust into the spotlight on Monday as a music industry group honored them with a career achievement award.
The pair received the Heritage Award during the 18th annual Rhythm & Soul Awards hosted by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), which collects royalties for its members from outlets ranging from public venues and radio to ringtones and jukeboxes.
Also honored at the Beverly Hills dinner were singer Alicia Keys and producer Jermaine Dupri as ASCAP's songwriters of the year, Smokie Norful as gospel artist of the year, and Sean Paul as reggae artist of the year.
Jam and Lewis, whose many accolades include a Grammy for producers of the year, and 16 No. 1 pop hits, have also worked with acts such as Mary J. Blige, Elton John and Gwen Stefani. In a video tribute, producer Quincy Jones placed Jam and Lewis in the same league as pop pioneers Leiber and Stoller, and Philadelphia soulmen Gamble and Huff.
"The true meaning of 'heritage' is an inheritance, so I think we've gotten more out of music than music's gotten out of us, and I'm just happy to be able to share a little bit of ourselves and our music with everybody," said Lewis.
Keys was honored for her work on four songs, including ASCAP's top R&B/hip-hop song, "If I Ain't Got You."
"Music is so special and spiritual to me," she said. "When people feel it back like how I feel it, it's a great honor for me."
Dupri co-wrote such hit tunes as Usher's "Burn" and "Confessions Part II."
"This is probably the best awards show for me, because all the songwriters, this is where we get recognized. A lot of times we get overlooked," he said.

Sophie Muller Directs Gwen Stefani's "Cool" Music Video
Sophie Muller has just completed a spectacular clip for Gwen Stefani's fourth single, "Cool." Shot on location in Italy, the video tells a tale of past loves and the memories that can linger. "Cool" is a stunning trip to Lake Como, Italy where Gwen plays an actress who has returned to her hometown for business. She meets her ex-boyfriend and his new fiance at her lakeside hotel, and while she is genuinely happy for them, she is also distracted by memories of the past. Flashbacks show a brunette Gwen and her former lover stealing kisses from one another in cobblestone alleyways and walking through the startlingly gorgeous landscapes. The video weaves between these two time periods to create a dramatic story only matched by Sophie's intoxicating visuals.
The video is hard to look away from, with Gwen Stefani steeping out as both a blonde bombshell and brunette ingenue placed in one of Italy's most beautiful settings. Sophie Muller has created another sumptuous video mixing a compelling story with intricate and striking visuals.

Stefani, Mario capture sound of 2005
By Ken Barnes, USA TODAY
Downloads were Gwen's world, while a super Mario hit dominated radio in the first half of 2005.
Putting her pom-poms down long enough to count her money: Stefani's Hollaback Girl is the year's top download to date.
AP
Gwen Stefani's Hollaback Girl outsold all competition as the top downloaded track so far this year. Stefani also scored the No. 8 track with Rich Girl. Total download sales hit 159 million, triple last year at this time.
Teen R&B crooner Mario's Let Me Love You easily topped the radio airplay list with a total audience of 2.6 billion (determined by total plays and listeners at radio nationwide) over the past 26 weeks. But his reign is not likely to last out the year.
Mariah Carey's We'll Be Together, which shattered total audience records in June, reached No. 6 for the first half on only three months' worth of airplay. It should soon surpass Mario's total and is the song to beat for the entire year.

Purple Ranger 14 - July 12, 2005 03:55 PM (GMT)
The download top 10 continues to strongly reflect radio's hits. But radio leans more toward R&B and hip-hop: 51% of the top 100 first-half hits, compared with 20% for pop, 19% for country and 10% for rock.
Radio's strong R&B/hip-hop orientation may be waning: At the end of 2004, 61% of the hits were R&B/hip-hop records.
Meanwhile, the top 100 downloads are more balanced: 33% R&B/hip-hop, 32% pop, 31% rock (and 4% for country).
Each of the top 10 download tracks reached the top 20 at some point this year on the national airplay chart. And radio's biggest hits generally become top-priority downloads. Nine of the top 10 radio hits ranked among the top 40 download tracks.
Although the download track list is rigorously oriented toward current hits, the occasional intriguing older title does crop up. Green Day's 1997 hit Good Riddance (The Time of Your Life) nearly cracked the top 50, likely boosted by the success of songs from the group's most recent album, American Idiot.
Also showing up in the top 200: Oasis' Wonderwall, Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama, Survivor's Eye of the Tiger, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Lee Ann Womack's I Hope You Dance, The Eagles' Hotel California and Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby.

Gwen Gets Personal On New Single
LOS ANGELES, CA Thursday Jul.7.2005 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- Gwen Stefani is getting personal on her next single, "Cool."
The song is about her good friend and ex-boyfriend, No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal.
Stefani tells MTV.com that she didn't intend to get personal on her solo debut "Love. Angel. Music. Baby," which she envisioned as more of a dance album. But when producer Dallas Austin asked for her help to finish a song he'd been working on, she couldn't help but think of her own experiences.
Austin had been trying to write his version of No Doubt's "Simple Kind of Life" but couldn't get the song where he wanted it. The track is about a romantic relationship that over time turns into a great friendship.
About writing the lyrics for "Cool," Stefani says, "No matter what you do, things just come out. It just ended this whole thing for me in my head, and it puts an end to a chapter in a really nice way."

DULUTH - Singer Gwen Stefani will bring her first solo tour to the county Nov. 8 with a stop at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Tickets for the show are tentatively scheduled to go on sale July 30. The tour, called “Harajuku Lovers,” brings The Black Eyed Peas on board in support of the band's fourth album, “Monkey Business.”
Stefani's solo debut, “Love, Angel, Music, Baby,” was released in November 2004 and has already given her three hit singles. The album's third hit, “Hollaback Girl,” is still among the top 5 on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart after the song's release in March.
Previously, Stefani had been best known as the lead vocalist of the pop-punk-rock band No Doubt. The band released its self-titled debut record while members were still in school and working day jobs in 1991. Its sophomore effort, “Tragic Kingdom,” launched the band to stardom in 1995, and it has released three more albums since then.
Tickets for the show will be available through Ticketmaster at 404-249-6400 or www.ticketmaster.com.
The arena is bringing two other big-name acts to Gwinnett this weekend. Comedian Jeff Foxworthy will take the stage at 8 tonight, and the top 10 “American Idol” contestants will perform during a sold-out show at 7 p.m. Saturday.

CAREY, STEFANI, PEAS MAINTAIN SINGLES LEAD
In the thick of the summer, hit singles from Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani and the Black Eyed Peas remain the most popular in the United States, but a new slate of contenders is on the rise. Carey's "We Belong Together" is the No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 for the seventh non-consecutive week of its 15-week chart tenure. It also leads the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list for an eighth week and notches its second week on top of the Pop 100.
Stefani's "Hollaback Girl", a former Hot 100 No. 1, is sitting steady at No. 2 in its 17th week on the chart. On the Pop 100, the cut slips 3-5, but it remains at No. 9 on the R&B/Hip-Hop tally. The Peas' "Don't Phunk With My Heart" holds again at its Pop 100 peak of No. 2 and Hot 100 peak of No. 3.
All three titles are in the top 20 of Billboard's Hot Ringtones chart, where "Together" holds at No. 4, "Hollaback" rises 12-11 and "Phunk" jumps 33-19. 50 Cent's "Just a Lil Bit" remains No. 1 on that chart for a third consecutive week.
But budding hits from the Pussycat Dolls, Rihanna, Missy Elliott and Kelly Clarkson are turning up the heat. The Dolls' "Don't Cha" featuring Busta Rhymes makes a 7-4 move on the Hot 100 and sits tight at No. 6 on the Pop 100, while Rihanna's "Pon de Replay" advances 9-5 on the former and 9-6 on the latter.

Purple Ranger 14 - July 15, 2005 05:30 PM (GMT)
Elliott's "Lose Control" featuring Ciara and Fat Man Scoop makes a 10-6 Hot 100 push and is up 14-11 on the Pop 100. Clarkson, whose single "Breakaway" holds the No. 1 post on the Adult Contemporary airplay chart for a 20th week, sees "Behind These Hazel Eyes" move 8-7 in the Hot 100 and 4-3 on the Pop 100.
Every one of the aforementioned singles, save for the 50 Cent cut, is in the top 10 on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart. But the big story there is the popularity of Jessica Simpson's version of "These Boots Were Made for Walkin' ". The remake of Nancy Sinatra's iconic single leaps 8-1 on the tally, and snags the greatest sales gainer title on the Hot 100, where it bolts 33-14 in its second week. The single from Columbia's "Dukes of Hazzard" soundtrack also jumps 42-12 on the Pop 100.
Also making waves is Bow Wow's "Let Me Hold You" featuring Omarion, which rises 3-1 on the Hot Rap Songs chart, holds at No. 2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop list and advances 15-11 on the Hot 100. On the latter two charts, "Hold" is the title that made the biggest airplay gains.
The Hot 100's top debut is a version of the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by Paul McCartney with U2 at No. 48. Recorded during the London Live 8 concert, the track was made available through Apple's iTunes music store shortly after the artists finished performing it, with proceeds benefiting Live 8. The cut is also new at No. 12 on the Hot Digital Songs list.
Also new to the Hot 100 are David Banner's "Play" (No. 90), Young Jeezy's "And Then What" featuring Mannie Fresh (No. 91), NB Ridaz's "Notice Me" featuring Angelina (No. 94) and 50 Cent's "Outta Control (Remix)" featuring Mobb Deep (No. 96).
On the Hot Country Songs chart, Toby Keith's "As Good As I Once Was" advances 2-1, ending the three-week reign of Rascal Flatts' "Fast Cars and Freedom," which falls to No. 2. Seether's "Remedy" is No. 1 for a fourth week on Billboard's Mainstream Rock airplay chart, while Foo Fighters' "Best of You" leads the Modern Rock list for a third. Shakira is No. 1 for a seventh non-consecutive week on the Hot Latin Songs chart with "La Tortura" featuring Alejandro Sanz.

Gwen Stefani - Cool

Gwen Stefani
Music from Interscope Records
Release date: 23 November, 2004
After a painful breakup, Gwen Stefani and her ex-boyfriend are now close friends in the sublime ballad "Cool."
Retro 80s-tinged keyboards which a modern electro touch open the single, creating an affectionate tone.
Stefani can't remember the hurt she felt anymore. The bitterness is long gone. She's moved on and married. Having a partner has made it easier for her to become friends with her ex. She has a good life with her husband and wouldn't want anyone but him: "It's hard to remember how it felt before/ Now I found the love of my life/ Passes things get more comfortable/ Everything is going right."
In the chorus, she congratulates him on his new girlfriend and wishes them well. They've loved and hated each other at various points but have found common ground. They've reconciled and are able to put their history behind them: "And after all the obstacles/ It's good to see you now with someone else/ And it's such a miracle that you and me are still good friends/ After all that we've been through/ I know we're cool."

Purple Ranger 14 - July 20, 2005 03:39 PM (GMT)
In the second verse, they thought they would go on fighting. However, they talk and respect each other. He refers to her as Mrs. Rossdale, although not too long he wished it was his last name she would have. For her, it feels like they never even dated. Time has dissolved the intial sting of the break-up: "We used to think it was impossible/ Now you call me by my new last name/ Memories seem like so long ago/ Time always kills the pain."
In the chorus, she mentions how they grew up in Harbor Boulevard. According to the numerous hotel listings on Google, that is located within Anaheim and near Disneyland. In Anaheim, they spoke of their dream of being in a popular band that will have music videos play on MTV. The children they remember walking down the street are now adults, visiting their families in their old neighborhood. Although they are adults, they are still similar to their young selves. "Remember Harbor Boulevard/ The dreaming days where the mess was made/ Look how all the kids have grown/ We have changed but we're still the same/ After all that we've been through/ I know we're cool."
In the bridge, she promises to support him if he does the same for her. They've been involved in their own O.C.-esque dramas, complete with love triangles. However, she and Rossdale now go out to dinner and watch television with her ex and his girlfriend. They've come a long way but it was worth it. "And I'll be happy for you/ If you can be happy for me/ Circles and triangles, and now we're hangin' out with your new girlfriend/ So far from where we've been/ I know we're cool."
Instrumentation of the chorus ends the single.

Purple Ranger 14 - July 20, 2005 03:40 PM (GMT)
The confessional "Cool" is Stefani's best single from the her album. The annoying self-promotion and product placement of "Harajuki Girls" that marred her first two singles is gone. In its place is Stefani at her most authentic. She likes to talk about her life and the conflicts she faces ( i.e. "Ex-Girlfriend" and "Bathwater ") For most singers, it usually comes as whiny and self-pitying. However, Stefani was someone who was unafraid to talk about her flaws or selfishness. In "Cool," she finally becomes human again and not a living advertisement.
