Raimi's Back Home With Dead

Director Sam Raimi, who is producing a remake of his ghost movie Evil Dead, told SCI FI Wire that he wanted to use the original backwoods cabin from the 1981 film. "I was sad to find out that the house where we shot the original burned down, unfortunately," Raimi said in an interview at the Saturn Awards in Los Angeles on May 3. (Raimi's blockbuster Spider-Man 2 film won five awards).
Raimi is mounting a remake of Evil Dead, which marked the beginning of his career, created a cult hit and introduced Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams. The film dealt with four friends who find an evil book, the Necronomicon, which unleashes bizarre flesh-eating creatures.
Raimi said he won't direct the remake himself, but rather is seeking a new director, male or female, to develop the characters he created and retell his campfire story. He added that he won't be very hands-on when the film gets retold.
Raimi also said that the remake won't feature Campbell. The director said he'd rather put Campbell in a new Evil Dead sequel, which would continue the story from the last movie, Army of Darkness.
As for that cabin? The original 16mm Evil Dead was shot in a real abandoned cabin in the hills of Morristown, Tenn. Raimi denied rumors that he ordered the cabin burned down to keep fans from spending the night there. "It would have been great to use it again," Raimi said with a sigh.

Raimi Mulls Many More Spideys
Spider-Man director Sam Raimi told SCI FI Wire that Sony Pictures plans to make six of the comic-inspired films, and that he'd consider helming them if he feels as strongly about them as he does about the upcoming third installment. "I've heard Amy Pascal [chairman of Sony's motion picture group] say she wants to make six Spider-Man pictures," Raimi said in an interview at the Saturn Awards in Los Angeles. "So I think she's a woman of her word. And if she says there'll be six, there'll be six. ... If they were to ask me, and if I felt as passionate as I feel now about the character and had this great hunger and desire to tell the story, which I really do now, you couldn't keep me away from it."
Raimi said the upcoming third Spider-Man film will in part chart Peter Parker's (Tobey Maguire) interior journey as he deals with his feelings about the death of his beloved Uncle Ben.
"The task that I had was to try and understand where he was when we last left him ... at the end of Spider-Man 2, trying to figure out what he lacked as a human being, as far as where he was immature and what he had not learned," Raimi said. "And certainly there's so much for that kid to learn. He really has been denied a social life. He's just been focused on being this do-gooder. And never really even dealing with the death of his uncle, just paying down his guilt with every criminal he brings to justice, never really addressing his own guilt that he feels in his heart and coming to terms with it. He's never really looked inside himself. So I think this picture ... he's going to have [to] look a little more inside himself and recognize and deal with some of the deficiencies that he has as a human being."
Thomas Haden Church (Sideways) will play a new as-yet-unidentified villain who is appropriate to that emotional journey, Raimi added. "We had to choose a villain that represented a proper obstacle in the path of that growth," Raimi said. "And so, though I'd rather not say who Thomas Haden Church is playing just yet-because Sony likes to make a proper presentation to the fans along with Avi Arad from Marvel Comic books-he was chosen because he represented that proper obstacle to ... Peter Parker's growth." Spider-Man 3 is in preproduction now.

SPIDER-MAN
The Experience Begins on the Web

TOPHER GRACE JOINS CAST OF SPIDER-MAN 3

Latest Adventure set to debut worldwide on May 4, 2007

CULVER CITY, CA May 19, 2005 - Topher Grace has joined the cast of Spider-Man 3, it was announced by director Sam Raimi and producers Laura Ziskin and Marvel Studio's Avi Arad.

Grace will join Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, and Thomas Haden Church in the blockbuster franchise.

Spider-Man 3 is scheduled for release on May 4, 2007, and will reunite returning cast members with director Sam Raimi
and producers Ziskin and Arad, the successful filmmaking team responsible for the first two films.

The Spider-Man film franchise has grossed more than $1.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales to date.
Production on Spider-Man 3, which was written by Alvin Sargent, is scheduled to begin early next year.

"I couldn't be more excited about the direction we are taking the continuing adventures of Peter Parker," said Raimi.
"Topher Grace is an extraordinarily talented actor and will be perfect for the complexities of the role we are developing.".

While speculation continues about which characters will be called into action, the studio will not comment on the new roles beyond confirming the casting of Grace and Church.

Purple Ranger 14 - May 24, 2005 02:56 PM (GMT)
Spider-Man 3 is being overseen by Columbia's President of Production Matt Tolmach and Shannon Gaulding, Director of Development for the studio.

Grace, who has been a weekly fixture in homes across America in the hit comedy series That '70s Show for the last 7 years, is
seamlessly transitioning from the small screen to the big screen. Testament to his success, he has recently been prized
with Breakthrough Acting awards by both the National Board of Review and the New York Online Film Critics, for his starring roles
in Paul Weitz's In Good Company and Dylan Kidd's P.S..

This winter, Grace starred opposite Dennis Quaid and Scarlett Johansson in In Good Company. And in P.S., which
premiered at this fall's Toronto Film Festival, he starred as the romantic lead opposite Laura Linney in an off-beat romantic
comedy adapted from the Helen Schulman novel by the same name.

Grace's major breakthrough on film came with his debut role in Steven Soderbergh's Oscar nominated movie Traffic, which he
followed-up with a memorable cameo in the Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven. He also reprises his role, as himself, in the
sequel Ocean's Twelve. Earlier this year he could be seen in Robert Luketic's romantic comedy Win a Date With
Tad Hamilton, alongside Kate Bosworth and Josh Duhamel. Before that, he was in last winter's Mona Lisa Smile,
opposite Julia Roberts, Kirsten Dunst and Marcia Gay Harden.

He fell into acting in high school in which he starred in plays such as A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum.
After high school, he moved out to Los Angeles for college and soon embarked on his acting career with a starring role on That
'70s Show, remarkably sans prior industry experience. He currently resides in Los Angeles.

Thomas Haden Church has also been cast as an as-yet-unnamed villain. Spider-Man 3 is slated to open May 4, 2007, with production beginning early next year.
Grace (That '70s Show) will also play a Spidey nemesis, though his character is being kept under tight wraps. Spider-Man 3 will be the first movie in the Marvel franchise in which the webslinger will face not one but two enemies, the trade paper reported.
Spider-Man 3 is written by Alvin Sargent, who also penned the second entry, and again directed by Sam Raimi.

Campbell A Lock For Spidey 3
Bruce Campbell told SCI FI Wire that he'll no doubt make an appearance in Spider-Man 3, directed by longtime friend Sam Raimi, but that he has no idea yet what he'll play. "Oh, I think I'll be in it," Campbell said in an interview while promoting the upcoming SCI FI Channel original movie, Man With the Screaming Brain, which he wrote, produced, directed and stars in. "But in classic big-budget movies they don't tell you anything, and they won't tell you anything."
Campbell has a tendency to turn up in films directed by his Evil Dead partner and pal Raimi. In the first Spider-Man movie he played the ring announcer who provided Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) with the nickname Spider-Man. And in Spider-Man 2 he was the snooty usher who didn't let Parker into the theater to catch Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) star in a play.
"When I get the [Spider-Man 3] script it won't be the full script," Campbell said. "It will only be my pages. And then my name will be stamped across each page and numbered. They take this stuff really seriously. So I don't even know. The only thing I can probably say is that I will probably be enlisted to torment Spider-Man. That seems to be my job." Spider-Man 3 will be released in 2007. Man With the Screaming Brain premieres Sept. 10 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

FDM Exclusive: 'Spiderman 3' Villains Revealed!!
Posted by: vaporrub September 7th 11:56pm
Sony has been taunting us for quite sometime now and have only given us clues as to who we might see in Spiderman 3, which hits theaters May 4th, 2007. What we know is only that Thomas Haden Church, Topher Grace and James Franco will be in the film and that two out of the three of them are conformed villains. The truth can be found below and it's pretty black and white...
FDM has learned that Topher Grace of That 70s Show will play the immortal VENOM in Sam Raimi's third Spiderman adaptation. We told you guys a few months back that "someone" has snagged the rights to the character of Venom off of New Line Cinema and it was reported a few days ago that Grace had been "bulking up"- so we decided it was time to put the pressure on. So there you have it VENOM! Now as for the other two stars listed above we've been told that Thomas Haden Church will in fact play SANDMAN and that James Franco will play HOBGOBLIN and not the Green Goblin II (like in the comics). No more info can be given at this time, but I've confirmed this with various sources and apparently it's quite well known.

Kirsten Dunst Spills The Beans On 'Spider-Man 3' Villains
Actress says Topher Grace will play Venom, Thomas Haden Church the Sandman.
by Larry Carroll, with additional reporting by Kelly Marino
After months of lips sealed tighter than the outfit on your friendly neighborhood webslinger, casting news on one of Hollywood's most anticipated sequels has slipped out.
Actress Kirsten Dunst, while recently speaking to a group of reporters, Yahoo revealed the identities of the villains in the soon-to-shoot blockbuster "Spider-Man 3."
"We have really great people, though, as the villains in this film; Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace - Venom and Sandman," Dunst divulged before being further interrogated over Church's obvious physical similarities to the brawny Sandman.
"It's the other way around," she corrected herself, listing Grace as Venom and Church as the Sandman. "You're right."
Although the casting of "In Good Company" star Grace and "Sideways" Oscar nominee Church was announced several months ago (see "Topher Grace Joins Cast Of 'Spider-Man 3' ... But As Who?"), those overseeing the "Spider-Man" film franchise have gone to great lengths to maintain the secret identities of their characters. Spidey-senses tingling, MTV News approached Dunst for more information and received another juicy tidbit.
"I think we have ... I'm going to say two and a half bad guys," the "Elizabethtown" star said. "Because I think one of them is resurrected. But yeah, two and a half bad guys, I think, about in this movie."

Purple Ranger 14 - October 1, 2005 10:41 PM (GMT)
Dunst, who will once again return as Mary Jane Watson, the object of Peter Parker's (Tobey Maguire)'s affection, would seem to have opened up the possibility of a previous Spider-Man nemesis - Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin or Alfred Molina as Dr. Octopus - returning to the silver screen. Both Marvel Comics and Spidey's studio responded with a "no comment" to Dunst's web of revelations, but her statements are nevertheless certain to inspire the rabid speculation of movie lovers, comic book geeks and chat-room enthusiasts everywhere.
For those unfamiliar with the villains, Venom is the name for an alien spacesuit that attaches itself to human bodies while attempting to take down the similar-looking webcrawler with its equally effective superpowers. The Sandman, meanwhile, is actually William Baker, a career criminal who survived a nuclear-reactor meltdown while lying on a beach. With his body mimicking the properties of sand, he can transform his malleable body into various shapes and sizes.
In one final (albeit smaller) revelation, the 23-year-old actress told MTV News that she expects Mary Jane to develop into more of an adult in the third film and less of a rag doll. "Obviously we've all grown up again," she said. "I'm sure the relationship with Tobey Maguire and I will again [be] a complicated love affair. So it's always in there. Hopefully I won't be swinging from ropes or anything or screaming in this one."
"Spider-Man 3" is scheduled to begin filming early next year and is expected to swing into theaters on May 4, 2007.

Dunst Confirms Spidey 3 Villains
Kirsten Dunst, who will reprise the role of Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi's upcoming third Spider-Man movie, has confirmed rumors that the sequel's villains will be Venom and Sandman, Zap2It reported. The report confirms widespread rumors that Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace would play the villains, though Sony and Marvel have so far declined to comment.
"Maybe I wasn't supposed to say that," Dunst said while promoting her new movie Elizabethtown. When she checked with her representative, the rep assured her that the information has already been released, the site reported.
Dunst was less clear on who would play whom. At first, she said that Church would play Venom and Grace would take on Sandman. She then reversed herself when a journalist expressed disbelief. "It's the other way around," she reportedly said. "You're right."
Sandman is a career criminal whose irradiated body can turn into a sand-like substance, the site reported. Venom is an alien symbiote that once masqueraded as Spider-Man's costume before taking over the body of ex-reporter Eddie Brock, who has a beef with Spider-Man over a journalism-related embarrassment.

Will Harry Turn To The Dark Side In 'Spidey 3'? James Franco Offers Clues
Actor says he's already shot special-effects test sequences for 2007 sequel.
by Larry Carroll
James Franco as Harry Osborn (Columbia Pictures)
From the beloved TV show "Freaks and Geeks" to passion-fueled movies like "City by the Sea," 27-year-old actor James Franco has perfected his slow burn - simmering silently, and then exploding with rage. In the love story "Tristan & Isolde" and the naval drama "Annapolis" (both arriving in theaters this month), he continues to perfect his James-Dean-like gifts, again portraying ticking time bombs. With principal photography beginning next month on the eagerly anticipated "Spider-Man 3," then, movie geeks and Franco fans alike find themselves united by the same question: When is Harry Osborn finally going to go off the deep end?
In 2002's "Spider-Man," Franco's Harry watched in horror as his diabolical dad, Norman (Willem Dafoe), became the Green Goblin and was subsequently snuffed out by the webslinger. In the 2004 sequel, the Osborn progeny seethed, stewed and descended into madness upon the realization that best friend Peter Parker was the man who offed his father. The logical progression (as comic book readers witnessed years ago) would be for Harry to assume his father's evil identity and attempt to destroy Spidey with a hailstorm of the Goblin's flaming pumpkin bombs.
According to Franco, however, things aren't as straightforward as they may seem. "The second film suggests that I'm going to a dark place," the ruggedly handsome, grinning actor admitted. "I think people will be a little bit surprised about what happens."
Scheduled to save the day on May 4, 2007, "Spider-Man 3" has filled countless Web pages and chatrooms with speculation - most of it centering on who, exactly, the returning Tobey Maguire will be duking it out with. Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace are believed to be Sandman and Venom, respectively (see "Topher Grace Joins Cast Of 'Spider-Man 3' ... But As Who?"), but a recent comment by loose-lipped co-star Kirsten Dunst gave hope to all those dying to see Franco in the iconic green metallic costume (see "Kirsten Dunst Spills The Beans On 'Spider-Man 3' Villains").

Purple Ranger 14 - January 10, 2006 06:58 PM (GMT)
"I think we have ... I'm going to say two and a half bad guys," the actress sometimes known as Mary Jane Watson revealed to MTV News in September. "Because I think one of them is resurrected. But yeah, two and a half bad guys, I think, about in this movie."
"She probably shouldn't have said that," Franco smiled uneasily, shaking his head. "She actually got into some trouble for that. I think she got into trouble for revealing that, so I probably shouldn't repeat that mistake."
Naturally, the "half" can only refer to one of two dead supervillains - the first film's Goblin or the second film's Doctor Octopus. And with the odds of Doc Ock's return seeming slimmer than Dunst herself, Franco's attempts to maintain the secrets of his character seem thwarted.
"Did she [say that?]," he fidgeted. "I'd love to talk about it. It's the one thing people ask me. I wish I could."
With talk of his confidentiality agreement out of the way, the conversation turned to another piece of paper - the contract binding Franco and his co-stars to three movies. With his participation almost concluded, now would seem to be the ideal time to wrap up Harry, the most foreshadowed supervillain since Superman's dad banished Zod and his cronies to the Phantom Zone.
"I don't know if it will wrap up," Franco offered, admitting that "Spidey 3" looks like it could be Harry's last hurrah. "But the character definitely goes to interesting places."
Franco is not signed on for further sequels ("They're so busy on the third one, nobody's talking about the fourth one yet"), and he concedes that all indications point to Harry getting in touch with his evil side for the next installment.
One final clue that Franco does allow is that he was among a handful of actors who recently assembled to shoot early test sequences before the real filming begins. "We shot scenes that will go in the movie," the star revealed. "They're shooting them early because they're literally inventing effects. So they need to give the effects team time to get up to speed."

Purple Ranger 14 - January 10, 2006 06:59 PM (GMT)
Well, one might deduce, if Harry is still going to be a typical angst-filled guy with no special powers, then why would Franco need to do special-effects tests?
"I don't know. I can't really talk about that," Franco grinned uneasily. "In the other films, I did plenty of wire work and green screen."
Ultimately, the good-natured Franco laughed off such cross-examinations, apologizing for his evasion while insisting that he genuinely does appreciate the fans' interest: "It's great to do work that you know people are interested in and are going to watch."
The fans will indeed be watching, very closely. And if Franco so much as picks up a pumpkin in the next year and a half, the Internet chatter will undoubtedly start getting wild about Harry.

Raimi To Helm Wee Free Men
Sam Raimi (Spider-Man 3) will direct The Wee Free Men, an adaptation of Terry Pratchett's best-selling young-adult fantasy novel, Variety reported. Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired the book and set Pamela Pettler to write the script.
Published in 2003, Wee Free Men centers on a 9-year-old farm girl who heads off to a parallel world to retrieve a brother who has been grabbed by a nasty fairy queen. She battles the monsters of Fairyland with the help of 6-inch-tall, blue-faced rowdies who wear kilts, speak in thick Scottish brogues, steal sheep and drink heavily.
The novel is part of the British author's Discworld series, whose volumes are big sellers around the world.
Raimi and Josh Donen will produce through their Sony-based company, along with Created By's Vince Gerardis and Ralph Vicinanza.
Raimi will also direct the upcoming third Spider-Man film, which gears up production this month.

'Spider-Man 3' casts its web over Howard
By Borys Kit and Tatiana Siegel Thu Jan 19, 1:04 AM ET
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Bryce Dallas Howard ("The Village") is in negotiations to play Peter Parker's love interest Gwen Stacy in "Spider-Man 3," which is scheduled to roll this month.
Gwen is pivotal in Spider-Man lore as Peter's high school crush, his first girlfriend and his first love. She ended up being kidnapped by the Green Goblin and died during a bridgetop battle in "Amazing Spider-Man" issue 121.
In "Spider-Man," Columbia Pictures put Mary Jane Watson, a later love interest of Peter's who was a model, in the Gwen role, casting Kirsten Dunst as the high school crush. The 2002 movie featured the famous battle on the bridge with the Green Goblin, though a Hollywood ending was added, and the character survived.
Columbia is keeping a tight lid on the third movie's story line, though it is known that Gwen is the third part of a love triangle and that the character does survive. The film is scheduled for release next year.
Tobey Maguire is reprising his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, while Dunst and James Franco are also returning. Topher Grace and Thomas Haden Church have been cast as the villains. Sam Raimi will return as director.
Howard, the daughter of filmmaker Ron Howard , reunites with "The Village" director M. Night Shyamalan in the upcoming "Lady in the Water," and will also star in Kenneth Branagh 's "As You Like It." She returns to theaters January 27 in Lars von Trier 's "Manderlay."

The movie featured the famous battle on the bridge with the Green Goblin, though a Hollywood ending was added, and the character survived.
Columbia is keeping a tight lid on the third movie's storyline, though it is known that Gwen is the third part of a love triangle and that the character does survive.
Tobey Maguire, Dunst and James Franco are reprising their roles, and Topher Grace and Thomas Haden Church have been cast as the villains.
Howard, the daughter of director Ron Howard, stars in M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming Lady in the Water and also headlined Shyamalan's The Village.

Howard Gets Wet In Water
Bryce Dallas Howard, who stars in M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming fantasy film Lady in the Water, told SCI FI Wire that she reteams with the director of The Village to play the title character, called a "narf."
"It's about a superintendent [at an apartment complex], played by Paul Giamatti, who discovers a narf, which is [a] made-up [name for the creature]," Howard said in an interview while promoting her latest film, the drama Manderlay. "But she's basically a water nymph. He discovers her in his swimming pool, and then she's in great danger, you discover, and he has to join together with all of the tenants of the building to bring her back to her world. Where they had before all been strangers, they now come together in order to do this thing of great importance."
Howard said that she welcomed the opportunity to reunite with Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense), both on a personal and professional level. "While I was making The Village he was two things for me," said Howard, who is also the daughter of director Ron Howard. "He was this angel that, in a way, descended from the heavens and discovered me, and he was also this brilliant director. Near the end of the movie we started realizing we could be friends, that we had a lot in common. Then, after the film, we stayed in great communication. By the time Lady in the Water started, we were very close, and he simultaneously, just as an artist, knew what my limitations were, knew where he could push me further and knew what my bag of tricks was and so what to not call upon. So working on [Lady in the Water] was a great experience, because I felt very safe, because I was with my friend and also very challenged because I was with someone who knew my instrument well."
Lady in the Water also stars Bob Balaban, Mary Beth Hurt, Bill Irwin, Freddy Rodriguez and Jeffrey Wright. Warner Brothers will release the film on July 21.

New 'Spidey 3' Image Has Fans Tingling About Venom
Picture could confirm Topher Grace's supposed role as supervillain.
by Larry Carroll
Tobey Maguire in "Spider-Man 3" (Sony Pictures)
With production finally under way on "Spider-Man 3," the web of rumors and gossip that has tied up message boards for months is finally beginning to unravel. Now, with the official release of a new image, Spidey fan senses are tingling over expectations of a story line as complicated as it is black-and-white.
"Spider-Man Is Wearing a Black Suit!" screams the Daily Bugle headline that was recently leaked quietly on Sony's official "Spider-Man 3" Web site. It's accompanied by an enormous photo of the blockbuster movie character perched atop a building ledge, looking downward in an apparently grim state of reflection. The page is notable for far greater reasons than J. Jonah Jameson giving better placement to Spidey's new threads than to a high school basketball game. Indeed, in the eyes of diehard fans, the release of this picture may confirm the third film's Venom story line, which has been the subject of heavy speculation.
For the benefit of those who don't sleep on Doctor Octopus bedsheets, Venom is the name of the deadly quasi-alien creature who has been menacing the comic-book version of Spider-Man for nearly 20 years. Originally a costume discovered on an alien planet during the spin-off series "Secret Wars," the suit eventually revealed itself as a sentient Symbiote attempting to permanently fuse with Peter Parker's body. Once the costume was removed, it attached itself to fellow Bugle reporter Eddie Brock, making him one of the webslinger's most feared supervillains.
Since his casting last year, rumors have circulated that Topher Grace will take on the Venom role opposite the similarly built (and named) Tobey Maguire (see "Topher Grace Joins Cast Of 'Spider-Man 3' ... But As Who?"). Although the complicated details of the acquisition of the suit and Eddie Brock's fall from grace are expected to be largely abridged for the film, fans continue to speculate that the black-suited menace will appear alongside Thomas Haden Church's Sandman and James Franco's Green Goblin (see "Will Harry Turn To The Dark Side In 'Spidey 3'? James Franco Offers Clues") as a trio of film villains. The film has already been slated for a May 4, 2007, release date.
Although many fan circles would undoubtedly be pleased by a cinematic Venom, the new image is already raising as many questions as it answers. If it is Venom, fans are asking, where are the white rings around the eyes and the slick spider logo on the chest? If the film does plan to avoid the complicated planet-hopping story line of "Secret Wars," how can it do justice to the unearthly creature? Finally, with Maguire facing his first fully-suited adversary, will director Sam Raimi give in to his "Evil Dead" tendencies and go wild with a computer-generated character? To paraphrase "Spider-Man" co-creator Stan Lee: Stay tuned, true believers.

British 'Spiderman' found guilty of nuisance in Hong Kong
Wed Mar 1, 12:43 PM ET
HONG KONG (AFP) - A British resident of Hong Kong was found guilty of causing a public nuisance by bringing the city centre to a standstill when he scaled the side of a building dressed as Spiderman.
Matt Pearce, a 30-year-old English teacher from Bristol, pulled the stunt on June 3 last year, a day before the 16th anniversary of China's bloody 1989 crackdown on the Tiananmen pro-democracy movement.
Pearce's lawyer Michael Vidler said the magistrate adjourned sentencing until March 15 to see whether Pearce is suitable for community service.
"The right of freedom of expression has been trumped. We are not surprised at the judgement. This issue will be dealt with in an appeal court," Vidler said.
Pearce was protesting at China's refusal to apologise for the military operation which left hundreds, maybe thousands, dead.
Traffic stopped and crowds of shoppers watched below as he climbed to the top of a giant LED screen and unrolled a massive yellow banner with the message "Justice Must Prevail. Injustice Anywhere is a Threat to Justice Everywhere".
Pearce, who has staged several other stunts in the southern Chinese semi-autonomous territory, stayed up for nearly two hours before he was arrested.

Banks Back In Spidey 3
Elizabeth Banks, who will reprise her role as Betty Brant in Spider-Man 3, told SCI FI Wire she's still not sure how much of her character will remain in the final cut of the movie, and she urged journalists to remind writer/director Sam Raimi that she is in fact Peter Parker's first girlfriend, according to the comic-book history. Still in the midst of filming the third part of the blockbuster superhero franchise, Banks took some time off to help promote her upcoming film Slither. "I learned my lesson a long time ago that everything can be cut," Banks said in an interview.
Brant is the first girlfriend of Spider-Man's alter-ego, Peter Parker, played by Tobey Maguire in the movie. But only Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) has appeared in the films as Parker's romantic interest.
Banks said she knows about her character, a red-head whom Parker meets at the Daily Bugle. Brant's colleague, Eddie Brock, turns on Parker after getting fired from the newspaper and becomes the supervillain Venom, rumored to be played by Topher Grace. Banks teased: "You should maybe write Sam Raimi a letter. I'm very aware of [the character's history]. Make him aware." She added: "Tell him I'm actually Venom!"
The third installment for Spider-Man is slated for a May 2007 release. Meanwhile, Banks battles squiggly slugs from outer space in Slither, which opens March 31.

Dunst To Star In Ghost
Paramount Vantage has acquired A.N. Wilson's supernatural novel A Jealous Ghost for Kirsten Dunst to star in and produce, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Virginia-based writer Megan Holley will adapt the book for the screen.
Dunst had said that she was interested in finding a dark, elevated psychological thriller in the vein of The Shining and Roman Polanski's Repulsion.
Holley's take detours from the book, which is written in the third-person omniscient voice, dropping certain elements while creating new characters and story points. The take sees Dunst playing a young woman studying in London who, upon beginning a relationship with one of her professors, starts seeing demons.

Spider-Man 3 Trailer: http://www.marvel.com/news/moviestories.705

Kiss-start for Kirsten
KIRSTEN Dunst takes centre stage in Sofia Coppola's latest film
Marie Antoinette. She tells BEN FALK what it was like to portray
France's most famous queen.

Kirsten Dunst is much more concerned about her professional life
than her personal one - a life which began with a screen kiss at 11
with Bradley Pitt in Interview With the Vampire and has morphed
expertly into adulthood.

She is now one of the most interesting actresses of her age group in
Hollywood, right up there with that other former child star, Natalie
Portman.

Kirsten, 24, has expertly juggled blockbusters (Spider-Man) with
indies (The Virgin Suicides), as well as the kind of tart teen fare
(Bring It On) that inevitably have more to them than meets the eye.
In other words, she has Lindsay Lohan's dream career.

She's reunited with her Virgin Suicides director Sofia Coppola for
Marie Antoinette - a revisionist and stylish take on the famous
French queen.

Filmed almost entirely at Versailles and filled with clever (and
deliberately) anachronistic touches, it was booed at Cannes, but
then only by French critics who thought the Americans were tainting
one of their own.

The flighty, young Marie of the film has drawn some comparisons with
a certain Ms Paris Hilton and while not conceding the point, Dunst
admits: "All she really wanted was to go to Paris and hang out in
Paris and shop."

But, she continues: "I think she was trying to find some kind of
sanity in the world she was living in. All she wanted to do was live
her life and she was put in a position where she was isolated."

Shooting in France and appearing in almost every scene, Kirsten was
aware of the parallels. "My friend and I, we'd go to these little
vintage stores and we'd go to see art," she reveals. "We'd
definitely try to explore as much on the weekend as we could,
because we were working so hard and it's important to try and make a
little life for yourself wherever you are."

She also had etiquette lessons, where they practised "dancing and
singing in French and we'd play games. Walking, bowing..."
Unfortunately then, nothing that really helps her regular life. She
laughs: "I don't think so, it's such a different world. I don't
really bow to people."

And while she found a lot in common with Marie, one of them wasn't
the character's love affair with clothes.

"I don't feel allconsumed in fashion," she says, "I don't use it as
an escape for myself."

And even when she does think about it, it's not from flicking
through the pages of Vogue.

"I always draw from movies more," she explains. "Whenever I see a
movie, I always tend to want to dress like that for the day. I loved
how Catherine Deneuve looked in Repulsion."

It's true to say that her idiosyncratic outlook marks her out from
the rest of the Hollywood youngsters seen tumbling in and out of
nightspots. She is rarely pictured in the tabloids and instead lives
happily with her two cats Lila and Cat Stevens.

"It's important to do other things," she says. "I'm not the type of
actress who wants to do movie after movie after movie."

Life at the moment for Kirsten has just as many questions as
answers - and that's quite alright.

"I'm still growing up," she grins. "I'm still trying to figure it
all out."

Dunst gets on famously with her on-screen love rival!
Actress Kirsten Dunst has scoffed at reports that suggest that vibes
of the wrong kind are flowing between her, and her 'Spiderman 3' on-
screen love rival Bryce Dallas Howard. Howard plays the character of
Gwen Stacy, a bookish blonde, who gives Dunst's character Mary Jane
Watson a run for her money in trying to capture the affections of
Dunst's on-screen love Tobey Maguire aka Spiderman. However, the young
actress has laughed off the rumours, and insisted that the two leading
ladies got along like a house on fire. "It's so funny. Everyone asks
me if it's a competitive thing but Bryce and I get on better than
anybody," Contactmusic quoted her, as saying. The 'Jumanji' star also
revealed that after acting opposite two actors in the movie, it
felt "nice" to have another girl on the set to "hang out with". "It
was nice to come to the set and have a girl to hang out with," she
said. The movie, whose trailer was recently released by Sony Pictures,
is set to hit theatres in May 2007.

Venom: The Sordid History of Spider-Man's Black Costume
Venom. In comic circles, it's a name that conjures up images of a murderous, hulking creature garbed in a twisted, black version of Spider-Man's costume. For fans eagerly awaiting Spider-Man 3, the black costume--and the inevitable rise of Venom--could signal the end for Peter Parker. But what's the story behind the alien costume that would come to be one of Spider-Man's most feared foes? Read on to find out!
It all began during the battle dubbed Secret Wars, when Spider-Man found a machine he thought to be a fabric replicator. Reaching for the black sphere produced by the alien machine, Peter Parker's arm, then his entire body, became engulfed in black goo. The substance seemed to acknowledge Peter's thoughts and oozing over Spidey's body, fashioned itself into a new outfit for the Web-Slinger. Now sporting a black variation of his original costume, Spider-Man found that the suit not only augmented his abilities, it also possessed some powers of its own; the suit generated its own supply of webbing and could change appearances according to Spidey's thoughts.
Returning to Earth, Peter soon discovered that the suit had a mind of its own, using Peter's body while he was sleeping. Peter brought the suit to Reed Richards, and the two learned that the suit was actually a symbiotic life form that had physically and psychically bonded to Peter. Reed needed to use powerful sonic waves to forcefully separate the symbiote from Peter. Contained in the Fantastic Four's headquarters, the symbiote eventually escaped and returned to Peter's home. Camouflaging itself as an old red and blue costume, Peter unknowingly put the symbiote back on. Peter broke the symbiote's hold over him by using the loud sounds in a church bell-tower. After splitting with the symbiote, Peter watched it slither away, assuming it would die in its weakened state.
Unfortunately for Peter, the symbiote fell inside the church where journalist Eddie Brock prayed. Brock wrote an article revealing the identity of a murderer called the Sin-Eater, but Spider-Man exposed the true identity of the killer and in the process caused Eddie to lose his job and spiral into depression. Sensing Brock's hatred of Spider-Man, the symbiote bonded with the dejected reporter.
As Venom, Brock possessed the same powers Peter had with the symbiote, but had two advantages crucial to hunting Spider-Man: he knew Spider-Man's secret identity and the symbiote could shield Brock from Peter's spider-sense. While Venom operated under a twisted moral code of innocence, he battled Spider-Man on numerous occasions, becoming a sinister rival not seen since Peter fought the original Green Goblin. Though they sometimes fought side-by-side, Venom was ever a thorn in Spider-Man's side.
Recently, Brock was diagnosed with a case of terminal cancer. While the symbiote could keep Brock alive, a spiritual epiphany left Brock wanting to make a final good act before dying. Brock auctioned off the symbiote and donated the money to several charities. The winning bid came from gangster Don Fortunato who gave the symbiote to his son Angelo, hoping he could make a name for himself.
Now bonded to the symbiote, Angelo immediately sought out and attacked Spider-Man. Spider-Man quickly defeated Angelo and the symbiote rejected its host as an unworthy successor. Splitting from Angelo in mid-air, the symbiote left Angelo to fall to his death. It found another host in the form of criminal Mac Gargan, infamous for adopting the supervillain identity Scorpion. The symbiote offered Gargan a chance to elevate his power and Gargan, a man whose hatred for Spider-Man nearly matched Eddie Brock's, willingly accepted.
Enlisted to join the new Thunderbolts, Venom now stands on the side of the angels, hunting heroes and unregistered individuals for the government. But can this murderer and madman remain on that side for long? Time will tell.

Hollywood star Kirsten Dunst has laughed off rumours that she is
pregnant. The Spiderman star left Hollywood watchers speculating about
her impending motherhood after she was not only spotted wearing baggy
clothing and ordering big boxes of sweet chocolaty treats, but also
overheard complaining of lower back pain and nausea during filming
of 'Spiderman 3'. Adding fuel to the fire was also Dunst's reported
interest in actor Toby Maguire's newborn daughter, as well her
curiosity about how Maguire's fianc‚e, Jennifer Meyer, dealt with
morning sickness. However, her spokesman was adamant that Dunst was
not expecting her first child. "Kirsten is not pregnant," ContactMusic

Franco's Goblin Gets into the Action!
Source: Edward Douglas
December 18, 2006
James Franco has been having a busy year, starting last winter with movies like Tristan & Isolde and Annapolis through the recent WWI drama Flyboys. He also has a small part in the upcoming indie The Dead Girl, but when ComingSoon.net talked to him, we were more interested in finding out from Franco how things were going on Spider-Man 3, particularly in terms of how much more action he's been getting into as the latest Goblin villain.
"Spider-Man is a combination of a lot of green screen and action," he told us. "I mean I shot one action scene that took six weeks for one scene, and then there's months and months and months of work on the computers that I'm not even a part of. When I see those movies, it's a different movie for me, and the process feels completely different than the result. Although Sam is one of the most fun directors I've ever worked with, the process can be tedious. You do small little segments, and when it all adds up and you see the final result, it's still surprising to me just because it sure doesn't feel that way when you're doing it."
Goblins don't have the best of luck in the Spider-Man comics and movies, so we were curious whether he knew anything about Harry Osborn (or anyone else) returning for a possible Spider-Man 4. "When we all signed on--Tobey, Kirsten, and I--we all signed on for three pictures, so when the first one did well, automatically we just did the second and the third. Now, we've done the third and the contracts are up. I guess it's just a little bit more up in the air than the other ones have been. I know that everyone has a great time, and I know that Sony and Marvel could do 100 if they could."
Franco also expressed his disappointment in not being able to make the huge San Diego Comic Con presentation for the movie last July, but he was in the middle of shooting a movie at the time.
Spider-Man 3 opens on May 4, 2007, while Franco can be seen in one segments of The Dead Girl, which opens on December 29 in New York and Los Angeles.

Raimi Producing New Shadow
Spider-Man helmer Sam Raimi will produce a new film version of the classic radio serial The Shadow for Columbia Pictures, which acquired the screen rights, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Raimi and Josh Donen will produce the movie, based on the 1930s serial, through their Buckaroo Entertainment banner; Michael Uslan will also be producing through his Comic Book Movies, LLC/Branded Entertainment. Columbia has set Siavash Farahani (Max Payne) to write the screenplay.
The Shadow debuted in 1931 on a CBS radio show, which aimed to boost the magazine circulation of sponsor Street & Smith. The character was actually the moniker for the announcer, but listeners began demanding stories based on the name.
Walter B. Gibson created the character, writing the adventures of a crimefighter who skulked in shadows wearing a hat and cape and who had the power to cloud men's minds.
Previous Shadow films include several in the 1930s and '40s, a Columbia cliffhanger serial starring Victor Jory and a couple of TV series in the early days of television. The most recent incarnation was a big-budget 1994 feature from Universal starring Alec Baldwin and directed by Russell Mulcahy; that movie didn't fare well at the box office, quashing a hoped-for franchise.
A Shadow movie has long been a dream project for Raimi, and the crimefighter's influence can be seen in Raimi's 1990 movie, Darkman. Raimi is not attached to direct at this time. Raimi's next film, Spider-Man 3, opens in May, and it's unclear where that franchise will go after that.

Superhero Hype! reported that FX will air clips from the upcoming Spider-Man 3 during the Jan. 2 showing of Spider-Man 2.

Purple Ranger 14 - December 24, 2006 07:52 PM (GMT)
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Spider-Man 3 star Tobey Maguire talks a bit about the black goo that transforms Spidey into Venom; the movie opens in May.

A crusader answers the call of the antihero
December 10 2006
"I didn't want to go through the social thing anymore and re-integrating into a new population of kids. It was really getting me sick to my stomach because I moved, like, a ton."
His mother, who once yearned to be an actress, gave him a choice, either school or acting. "So I said, 'I'll do that.' I became kind of isolated and really [kept] to myself a lot for a couple of years. And through acting I think I found, you know, something to put my energy into, basically."
Maguire ended up on the kid-acting circuit, doing commercials and TV, and at 16 really discovered acting for himself. He was doing the play "Thanksgiving Cries" at the Odyssey Theatre: "I just had a moment where I had to do something, and it was kind of like I was self-conscious and embarrassed, and I decided the only way I can get through it was just to really commit myself to the task, and I did it. I lost all of my self-consciousness and went into a, like, a little time warp of being."
It was then that he began consuming acting books and studying the greats on tapes — "Dustin Hoffman and Robert De Niro and going, 'What makes them better than everybody else?' " Maguire famously met another Hollywood kid, Leonardo DiCaprio, when he had a small part in "This Boy's Life," while DiCaprio played the lead opposite De Niro. The duo became part of a high-profile posse of partying young actors. But in truth, it was practically the first time in his life that Maguire actually had friends, because "there was some continuity of people from 14 to 15 on. I made friends that I still have from, like, 14 to 22. That's when I made all of my friendships. And there were really no friends before, and not many after."
Twenty-two is when Maguire became a star, after appearing in Ang Lee's "The Ice Storm," a trenchant and sad exploration of family dysfunction circa 1975.
At 27, he debuted Peter Parker, the soulful linchpin of a huge franchise. If the first installment was a classic creation myth, and the second, the "Ordinary People" of superhero movies, the third examines the burden and intoxicating allure of power. Yup, deciphering Maguire's words, there appears to be an existential battle brewing for Spidey's soul. "There's a lot going on in the movie, but part of it is kind of battling my dark side. Peter Parker's own kind of character flaws manifesting into …. " Maguire begins stumbling about, trying not to give too much away.
"Basically, there's the goo, right? The symbiont which has, like, a dark energy, like the goo from the thing that creates venom." To someone not totally versant in the Spider-Man mythology, Maguire sounds vaguely demented. He realizes it, laughs and backs up. He's not referring to venom, but Venom, "a very, very popular character from the later Spider-Man comics. He has the same kind of attributes that Spider-Man has, but he's just stronger, faster and more vicious than Spider-Man. And it comes from this goo that comes from outer space, so first the goo comes and gets hold of me."
According to Maguire, the "Spider-Man 3" story arc was laid out by Sam Raimi and his brother Ivan, and written by 76-year-old Academy Award winning screenwriter Alvin Sargent. At some point, Maguire was consulted. He's known for being opinionated about his characters, and does sound proprietary about his more famous alter ego.
"It's important to me to have continuity of character," he says. "To not see the same movie regurgitated over again, because I would go crazy."
Even within a genre, Maguire wants to make sure to expand his character as far as he can go. He pressed the filmmakers to reinvent the wheel one more time. "I can't play that same scene," he says. "It's just uninteresting. I don't want to see it; I don't want to be in it."

Kirsten Dunst is not expecting her first child
Kirsten Dunst laughed off rumors saying she is pregnant.

The "Spiderman" star left rumors speculating about her pregnancy after
she was not only spotted wearing baggy clothing and ordering big boxes
of sweet chocolaty treats, but also overheard complaining of lower
back pain and nausea during filming of "Spiderman 3", as newkerala.com
notes.

Adding fuel to the fire was also Dunst's reported interest in actor
Toby Maguire's newborn daughter, as well her interest about how
Maguire's fiancee, Jennifer Meyer, dealt with morning sickness.

Dunst's spokesman said the actress is not expecting her first child.

The actress was linked with actor Andy Sandberg earlier this year, and
reportedly dating Orlando Bloom from October after her split up with
her long time boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal.

Raimi Returns To TV
Spider-Man director Sam Raimi is making a major push into television, tapping former Tribune Entertainment and Universal executive William Hamm to run his newly formed Ghost House Television banner, Variety reported.
The company's first scripted project is a miniseries adaptation of Dean Koontz's best-seller The Taking, which Raimi and Ghost House partner Rob Tapert will executive-produce. Larry Block, who brought the idea to Ghost House, will be co-executive producer.
Like its sibling Ghost House Pictures, the TV unit will have a singular focus: producing scary content.
Ghost House is still looking for a writer to adapt Koontz's The Taking, with an eye on pitching it to networks late next month or in early February.
The book revolves around an apocalyptic rain that promotes an otherworldly invasion. The small-town thriller has as its unlikely heroes a husband and wife, whose traumatic childhood may be key to beating evil.

Dunst sees kindred spirit in Antoinette
Kirsten Dunst has gone from child vampire to Spider-Man's love
interest and now French queen Marie Antoinette.

The doomed queen's rise in the aristocracy could mirror the actress'
own climb to Hollywood stardom.

The 24-year-old Dunst said that playing the 18th century teenage
monarch in her new movie, Marie Antoinette - which opens in
Australia on Boxing Day - was one of the most intense roles of her
career.

The movie revolves around the title character, putting the pressure
squarely on Dunst to put in a strong performance.

Playing the queen was made even more difficult because of director
Sofia Coppola's style of telling stories, as much with pictures as
with words.

Yet Dunst said she had one factor in her favour.

"I can understand the psychology behind it all," she said of Marie
Antoinette's rise to Queen of France, "trying to find yourself while
you're being watched by other people and asked how you're finding
yourself".

The movie focuses on young Marie Antoinette, an Archduchess of
Austria who, at age 14, was sent to France to marry the dauphin who
eventually became King Louis XVI.

Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette famously met their demise at the
wrong end of a guillotine during the French Revolution, but the
movie excludes their deaths and focuses on Marie's growing into
adulthood amid the arrogant aristocracy at Versailles.

Dunst was a child when she began acting and her early roles ranged
from big-budget thrillers like 1994's Interview with the Vampire to
art-house films like Sophia Coppola's teenage drama The Virgin
Suicides in 1999.

Three years later, her role in Spider-Man catapulted the actress to
stardom when the film became a box office smash with global ticket
sales of $US822 million ($A1.05 billion).

Marie Antoinette marks the reunion of Dunst and Coppola, and working
with the director was a key reason Dunst said she took the part.

"She lets you express anything you are feeling and doesn't judge,"
Dunst said.

"She struggles to find your identity."

But Coppola often uses images more than words to convey a
character's thoughts and emotions. In effect, the director takes
away one tool the actress would use to play the part, and that made
Dunst's job all the more difficult.

"It's hard to put into words, but it was a different kind of acting.
It was the most alone I've felt," Dunst said.

Initially, Marie Antoinette was expected to be a serious historical
accounting of the young queen's days at Versailles.

It was shot at the massive French chateau outside Paris, and it used
the opulent rooms and manicured lawns for sets. The stars, who
include Jason Schwartzman as Louis XVI, dress in fabulous costumes
that mirror the finest clothing of the day.

But Coppola has added a pop culture sensibility to the film with a
soundtrack full of 1980s tunes from the likes of Bow Wow Wow.

The movie often exudes a lighthearted sense that runs counter to the
seriousness of the demise of the French monarchy and the beginning
of the country's revolution.

At May's Cannes film festival, where it premiered, Marie Antoinette
shocked some audiences and was met with boos.

Since then, however, the tide has turned and the movie is now
meeting with much critical praise. For one, The New York Times'
reviewer AO Scott wrote: "What to do for pleasure? Go see this
movie, for starters."

"This is a beautiful piece of art and a brave film, and the fact it
cannot be ignored and is controversial only makes it more of a film
that means something," Dunst said.
