My favourite recording has to be "Vicky Police - Masterblasters". This is probably the best studio recorded cd of a band that i have ever herd!!!! For a band that good to disband is unbelievable.
I would love to hear what everyones favourite recordings are.
My favourite Band Ones

Boghall and Bathgate - Inspired
FMM - Unplugged

The best Solo CD I've heard this year is Angus MacColl's "A Tradition of Excellence". (That's the CD he was selling at the last recital in May). His fingers are pure magic.
The Band CD I enjoy the most is "The Millennium Concert" (actually a double CD) recorded just before the World's in 2000. Four Grade 1 bands in top form plus Gordon Duncan.
TomMacD - August 10, 2003 10:20 PM (GMT)
My favourite is SFU's "Down Under".

ive only heard a few but i abslutely love Boghalls "Inspired" album in Northern Ireland.
The medley where they finish on the last few bars to "A Call to the Gathering" (its a slow air if anyone didnt know) is absolutely beautiful. dont think i've ever heard a finish to a medley quite as nice as that one.

Has anyone heard the 78th's new CD? Their arrangement of the little cascade is absolute class, I wonder what G.S. would of thought of it.

There was a lot more to it than that. The police insisted on them playing much more for police events and severely curtailed their ability to compete. That's why so many players left so suddenly.

It was such a shame with the vicky police, they came over to the worlds and they wipped the floor with everyone. nobody matched them for playing in the pipe sections anyway.

Wow, I'm surprised how conventional the choices are here. Esp. from the youngers pipers. No votes for Gordon Duncan's solo stuff? How about The Vale of Atholl's albums where the various members of the band showcased not just their piping and drumming but about half a dozen other instruments from Bazoukis to clarsachs. What about real folky stuff like Deaf Shepherd or something really esoteric like Fuair Mi Pog where Allan Macdonald plays pipes along to gaelic songs to show how pibroch evolved? For me straight piping, even of the highest order, gets a bit dull sometimes

I like looking for things a little bit more out of the ordinary too. It's rather like the World's CDs. I always listen to the Medleys first because they're all about original ideas and creativity. Sure, MSR's are great but how many times do you really want to hear Highland Wedding? (Incidentally, do you know that this year's World's recordings now covers 3 CDs not 2).
I have a CD entitled Fosgail an Dorus which features Jamie MacInnes and Paul MacNeil which is all about the Cape Breton style of playing. The piping is really superb and it also features several other instruments: - piano, fiddle, viola, drums, bouzouki, bass, dobro and bodhran. A real education for anyone who is not familiar with Cape Breton music.
I also have a recording of the John MacFadyen Memorial Lecture in 1992 entitled "The Poetry of Piobaireachd" where Allan MacDonald and Roddy MacLeod were the featured pipers in an exploration of the development of piobaireachd and clarsach music.

Has anybody any recomendations for any new recordings? I am looking to add to my collection.

As the thread is concerning recordings, I suppose it also includes video recordings?
The best band recording I have is The Black Watch "Majestic Scotland". The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards "Highland Cathedral" is OK but designed for a very wide market audience.
The solo video I most enjoy is John D. Burgess "A Piping Legend"

I was on a couple of recordings the band did the 1st was for an American tour and the 2nd was the "Ladies from hell" cd, They released it just after I left so I didn't get my name in the cover but you can see me on the back.
Majestic Scotland was recorded just after I left, There are some VERY good pipers on that recording.
Riperpiper - February 4, 2004 11:58 PM (GMT)
I've got a copy of 'Ladies From Hell'.
I was very impressed with it.
It's very interesting to learn that you were part of it.

The CD was recorded at the band practice room at Inverness. Greentrax recordings came down with all their equipment and did a test recording. The sound quality wasn't very good, too much of an echo. We were sent up to our rooms and ordered to return with our matresses, these were placed around the room and the result is what's heard on the CD.
Has anybody else been part of a pipe band recording?
