Alo. For anybody who wants to share tips/methods in creating costumes, this is the place. You can also post anything if you need help.
Right now im trying to look for someone who know about dyes. how to you actually apply dye (jobos) on cloth...im trying to see if i can get a specific clothing article for a costume that i can seem to find in stores. the cloth would have two colors in it, one fading into the other. i think i find that, might as well dabble in dyeing.
first off where would i buy dye, how would i mix it in water...then how would i be able to achieve that fade in/out to another color.
thankees :D

There are some dyes that are available at wet markets (palengke) but I think they only have black, red, blue, green, purple available (at least where I buy them) They just cost around P5 a pack.
In mixing them with water, make sure the water is hot and add a portion of vinegar. Now I forgot what't the purpose of the vinegar but its needed. Anyways, for the parts of water and vinegar, I'm pretty sure there are instructions at the back of each dye pack.
As for the color blends, I've been taught to do tye-dyed shirts before and its really simple. Just soak part of the shirt to one color and another part to another color. You can even twist the shirt first before soaking it to get a nice pattern. But sometimes its hard to get a good effect on them especially with color fades.
Why not try airbrushing?

If applicable, always ALWAYS iron your costume or make sure that it's crease-free before going to a con. It can make a hell of a ton of difference. ;)

thanks for the information!
two reasons:
1) dyeing is something new i think would be interesting to try out. although i might be messy.
2) i think airbrushing would be nice...altho would cost more.
you think i can dye a cloth that has a consistency of "knitted"? like socks, or some shirts na parnang may small "knits" :unsure:

I've tried dyeing costume articles twice... both for Yuna, since I can't seem to find the right colored cloth for them (a.k.a., the sleeves for YunaX and the skirt for YunaX-2. I'm especially proud of the latter one as I was slightly able to get it to match the actual thing. ^_^)
For dyes, you can buy Venus dyes at National Bookstore. (The one in Q. Ave have them in stock. The other branches are always sold out.) Or like Jojie said, you can buy them at a wet market. I'm not sure about the colors, but the dyes in NBS have pink (which I used for YunaX), dark blue (which I used for YunaX-2), green, violet/purple, black, red, light blue... I forgot the other colors. ^^;
Then just follow the instructions on the packet. ^_^ Make sure to dissolve the dyes in hot water. To help you with clothhandling, pin it on a hanger with clothespins. When immersing the cloth in the dye bath, make sure it isn't held long at a certain level, otherwise you'd end up with a straight line. I worked with cotton, and when I dip the cloth in the bath, usually the water would just travel up the cloth up to a certain point... I forgot the scientific term for this... ^^;;; That's the process that usually creates the fading effect.
edit: I'm not sure about the type of fading you require, but it helps if you already have your cloth cut to the proportions that you need. First you have to dye one end and let it dry (darker color at the bottom) before doing the other undyed-end so the water from the other end won't mix with the other color. And then...
... er... don't know what other things to suggest besides that. ^^;; Gomen. Hope I was some help. ^.^;
