Title: Christmas Tree Poll
Description: Not wanting to be morbidly curious
Jack_Tarr - November 25, 2005 09:48 PM (GMT)
I'm really curious since we have people from all over. What do you do tree wise for the holidays?
kana da - November 25, 2005 10:25 PM (GMT)
No tree. Dad says they're a pagan symbol. Plus we can't afford one.
Omnivorous - November 25, 2005 10:35 PM (GMT)
Me Pagan. Kinda...
Anyway, christmass tree are a Germanic trait brought into the English-speaking world by Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria of the British Empire.
A tree is nice as when it is on at night the lights glow through the curtains...
Parrrrtay - November 25, 2005 11:14 PM (GMT)
Artificial Tree the past 4 years. We always had a real one until then, they are just too expensive now. A nice real one will cost $50 - $100 dollars around here.
Beaver-Country-Canada - November 26, 2005 01:30 AM (GMT)
Whoof, where do you live, Shay? They cost $20 in Castlegar!
We're not getting a real tree this year :( But both my parents are, or at least my mom is, so I still get one! :D Yay!
Parrrrtay - November 26, 2005 01:54 AM (GMT)
Michigan, you can get one for $20 the day before Christmas :ph43r:
Actually you can buy cheaper ones if you want a Charlie Brown tree.

Me too. :)
mavenu - November 26, 2005 07:44 AM (GMT)
'tificial, due to allergies.
shouldn't you have an option for the 'upside down' tree?
available at this store...
Jack_Tarr - November 26, 2005 04:49 PM (GMT)
I suppose I should have a choice for a Festivus Pole too but oh well. :P
Yulia - November 26, 2005 07:03 PM (GMT)
I usually get real trees. I don't know where you all live... It's generally between $10-$15 for a nice tree that's actually house-sized. If you want a gigantic one, it's probably about $35, but I've never gotten one.
kweezy - November 26, 2005 07:26 PM (GMT)
Artificial-lasts longer and easier to clean up and take care of.
king_girl - November 27, 2005 12:20 AM (GMT)
We always had real trees until we had small children who liked to eat the needles and play in the water. Sooooo....right now we have an artificial tree. I suppose we will go back to real when this one wears out.

Yes. There is no "suppose" in that future. It's not just the idea of having a real tree, it's the fun of burning them when they are dry and brittle. ;)
SensitiveMadScientists - November 27, 2005 01:17 AM (GMT)
Real tree, help support little farmers and it's bird habitat two weeks after Chrsitmas.
Could someone post the results of the vote, I don't think it's classfied information but it won't let me see it me being a emissary and all.

I hate to admit, I fake Christmas. :P We've got a fake tree because I see no point in cutting down a piece of nature every year. Plus, the dog pees on real ones.
Judith Gap - November 27, 2005 01:02 PM (GMT)
Even though the tree is a pagan symbol, I still don't have one. During Christmas, I visit my family in Dallas, and they have an artificial one (with the prestrung lights).
j delight - November 27, 2005 03:19 PM (GMT)
I wanted to take the kids to a tree farm this year, since they are now past the stage of messing with the tree.
I gave away our artificial tree last year due to it's ugliness and lingering "odor" of Christmases past.
We like a Yul log and celebration of Solstice, too, but not because of religion of any kind.
Redundancies - November 28, 2005 04:42 PM (GMT)
None. But there's not reason to have one in my little apartment since no one comes over for Christmas.

Well, it *used* to be, but the Christians took it over as their own. I figure it's okay if I see them in my Catholic church...
conguered-land - November 28, 2005 04:43 PM (GMT)
yea but almost every holiday was taken from the pagans... there really is no such thing as a christian holiday other then maybe easter...

Amen.
:P To all the stores that put up Christmas decorations earlier each year, trying to replace the Christianity with commercialism in our pagan holidays.
Jack_Tarr - November 28, 2005 05:57 PM (GMT)
Our festivus pole will last for ever and it is very shiny too.

I always try to understand the whole christmas thing... When I was a kid I just took it as word that Jesus was born on that day... then as I got older I learned that it is just really a place holder to celebrate, because he was born in march or early the following year. Then I learned not so much a place holder as it was a technique to easier take over a civilization and blend them into existing customs....
its funny how complicated history really is....

I'll assume your dad doesn't know much about the whole ties between Christians and Pagans huh?
I'll go with ya on the can't afford one though ... who in their right mind actually pays more than $20 for a tree??
We got our Xmas tree on Dec. 24th last year. It was free. Those tree lots tend not to stay in business on the 24th and all their trees get thrown out anyways ... so we just kinda ... um ... took one.

NoFunNinjas - November 28, 2005 10:12 PM (GMT)
real tree: they smell great and look cool, they shed needles though and you have to kill a tree to get one.
artaficial tree: doesnt shed needles, can be used over and over again, doesnt smell, looks like crap.
no tree: what kind of christmas would it be with no tree?
